Re: Benny Mardones’ pedo anthem..
There were so many interesting chart achievements in the 80s when people had far less access to information to learn about music releases. Many examples of songs that flopped on first release and then became hits after appearing in TV shows years later, regional stations could start playing an older song and it could eventually take off nationwide like a brand new single, Donny Osmond scoring a late 80s hit by his label hiding the identity of the artist (leading many to assume it was George Michael) until the song was already taking off...

Retro Hot 100 - 39 years agoDiana Ross' "Upside Down" was her 2nd disco-era #1 ("Love Hangover" hit the top in 1976), and 5th overall. Diana becomes the first female solo act to achieve five #1 Hot 100 hits, breaking a 3-way tie with Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer. Barbra Steisand's new entry "Woman In Love" ended up tying the record again by the end October, and that was the last #1 for any of the 3 artists. "Upside Down" was also the Motown label's 46th Hot 100 #1. #1 Soul, #1 Disco, top 20 AC. Her follow-up, "I'm Coming Out," debuted at #88, and became a big hit for her as well. Endless Love went number one after Upside Down

It may be too early to say, it may not be too early to say. Nevertheless, who here feels that Lil Nas X will remain a technical "One Hit Wonder", or do you think he'll be able to score #1's/frequent Top 10 hits from here onward? Regardless, "Old Town Road" has him set for life in terms of constant royalty cheques (thus he coyld easily 'retire' tomorrow) but I'm curious to see if he'll become another artist that was successful with one single/an era (or two) before never being seen again on the charts or will he actually capitalize from a lucrative music career? P.S: I like "Panini" far more than "OTR". I feel like this is a question that would have to be asked 10 years from now. When I see those 1 hit wonder shows a lot of them had a second hit it just got so overshadowed people have to hear it to remember it or just don't.

I think Lil Nas X checks all the boxes to remain more remembered for the memes than the rest of his musical output... but Panini is doing alright at the moment and might eventually prove me wrong.
He's seems to follow the charts and knows the game so even if it doesn't work out with this EP, I'd expect a sizable push for whatever is next from him.

Panini has been hanging around for two months - He will never again get a hit the size of Old Town Road, but I would call Panini a hit regardless

Panini is a hit because of it's following old town road. But it's massive diminishing returns on that song. I imagine from Panini to whatever his next song is there will be similar diminishing returns, probably won't really be a hit, and soon after then his songs probably won't chart. I've not seen anything to suggest people care about him as an artist, or even take him seriously as such and frankly there's nothing interesting about his music or his musical personality.

Random question: If Truth Hurts goes #1 it'll have been nearly 2 years since it released. When was the last time a song went #1 after being out for that long?

Random question: If Truth Hurts goes #1 it'll have been nearly 2 years since it released. When was the last time a song went #1 after being out for that long? The original version of Cheerleader was released in 2012 and didn't hit number one until mid 2015, so that was about 3 years. Although, if you aren't counting the original version, it would only be about a year between when the remix was released and when it went to number one. If you don't count Cheerleader, then (assuming it does hit number one) Truth Hurts would be the longest time between release and hitting number one of the 2000s so far. Can't Hold Us was close though, as it was released in August 2011 and hit number one in May of 2013, so about a year and nine months.

A reminder that Monday is Labor Day in the United States, so this week's #1 will most likely be revealed in Tuesday instead.

I’d say LNX’ best bet would be to get himself as a featured act on someone else’s song. He doesn’t take himself seriously as a musical act so he doesn’t have much of a persona with music (compared to his persona as an online personality which is through the roof). He could go and stay a comedic route but I wouldn’t see that taking him very far (chart-wise at least. He could totally make a career out of it and be fine) but if he wants to be somewhat serious, he needs some transitioning into that and I think jumping on other artist’s tracks for a few years would help that. It’s an uphill battle for sure.

The bad thing about cases like Lil Nas X is that people were in support of Old Town Road, NOT the artist who made the song. Old Town Road started as a viral hit and then grew and grew only to face pushback from charting as a country song, that gave it more steam and made more people support it just to see it do well. Lil Nas X then went and got Billy Ray Cyrus on the remix which in it's own way, opened a lot of doors. From there, the support became organic and more people grew to genuinely love and support the song for what it was.
Only issue is that when you literally start your career off with the longest-charting Hot 100 song of all time and one of the biggest hits of the decade, how do you top that or even hope to match it? Especially when music is something you admittedly jumped into strictly out of boredom?
Lil Nas X obviously doesn't take music seriously and is probably more fascinated with everything else that comes with it than the music itself so I definitely don't see him having a long-lasting career. He'll forever be the Old Town Road guy the same way Fetty Wap will forever be the Trap Queen guy.
I think he'll put out more songs, but none of them will really stick or take off. At least, not nearly as well as Old Town Road did.

It's really a coin toss whether a new act can make it for the long run or not. People were here for OTR and not LNX, I agree, but the same could be said about Rihanna with "Pon de Replay" and Katy with "I Kissed a Girl", yet they eventually proved they were stars on their own right.
Right now I don't think the EP provides that type of song for LNX but there's always the next album or a collaboration.

I think he'll put out more songs, but none of them will really stick or take off. At least, not nearly as well as Old Town Road did. Of course - You can't get bigger than a song that shattered records that have been in place for decades. No where to go but down Panini is a hit and he will probably get a few more too but 19 weeks at #1 will be hard to beat.

So what's getting knocked out this week due to the album bomb? Any big songs going recurrent? I heard Whiskey Glasses and God’s Country will go recurrent. Even though Clout is predicted by simm to remain this week, it would be in its 21st week and under the top 50, so I'm not 100% certain the chart editors will not make it recurrent yet.
