There isn't a more perfect time in her career than now for some fun projects before her next full-length studio album. The industry is becoming a singles-heavy game, so maybe release a few that wouldn't necessarily fit on a whole album (would also be helpful for her streaming numbers), a holiday album (make some proper videos, ship a song or two to multiple radio formats...pretty much just mimic Kelly Clarkson's Wrapped in Red era), some random duets with other artists like she usually does between eras ("Remind Me," "The Fighter," "Somethin' Bad," etc.)... Not like she's touring any time soon, especially w/ what COVID is doing to the live music industry. Might as well take this opportunity to truly get creative and change up the pace, especially for the sake of her career. There's only so many times an artist can go around in the exact same circle before it starts to feel stale to the listener. And it's starting to get that way. Lead single, album drop, single #2, 1st half of tour, single #3, 2nd half of tour, single #4, [silence], random duet, [silence], rinse & repeat. (Side note but it continues to infuriate me to no end that she/her team continue to release exactly four singles from each album [and usually at least 2 of them are poor single choices, but that's an entirely separate can of worms], and nothing more, regardless of fan excitement. How is that helpful or representative of the project? Give it legs. Play On had legs. Blown Away had legs. Storyteller had legs. And had it not been for "Love Wins," this album would've had stronger legs than it has, too. A few of those could've/should've had at least one more single released from them.) Yaaaas I have converted another to wanting a Christmas album from Queen Carrie this year! I completely agree, what better time to release than 2020? She wouldn't tour for a Christmas album anyway beyond maaaaybe 1-2 one off concerts. Even if she hasn't started recording, so much of a Christmas album is traditional covers that she would still have plenty of time to record one to release it in time for the holidays. I'm also really intrigued by the idea of her releasing a "classic country" album...predominately covers of country classics, maybe even a few original songs intentionally produced similar to the 60's/70's/80's style of country music. Throw a duet on there with Dolly or something for good measure. While I don't think anything like that would necessarily perform well on country radio, I do think Carrie's starpower would help it sell enough to at least turn a profit. Honestly, I would be totally okay waiting until 2022 for CU7 if it means we got a Christmas album and/or a Classic Country Album.

A female artist in her late 30s, just slightly past the peak of her radio career but right in the middle of her commercial peak, releasing an album of country classics produced similar to the 60's/70's/80's style of country, that sells really well based on star power but does nothing at radio... Hell, it's even got an obligatory Dolly feature 😂 And it's only a good idea if we want Carrie to completely torpedo her radio career right as Gabby, Ingrid, Maren, Carly, etc. are all freshly exploding onto the scene and will be poised perfectly to replace her as radio's leading lady. Just like Carrie/Miranda/Taylor were exploding right as Martina pretty much voluntarily removed herself from the radio for 2-3 years by wasting an entire album era on a classics album... It would be cool to get one from Carrie sometime, for sure! But now is literally the worst time for that to happen, imo. Unless she manages to put it out as a side project and have another album of new material ready right away. Which, considering how slowly Carrie makes new music, is not likely. Edit: OMG it was literally Martina's 7th studio album too (not counting the Christmas album), just like it would be for Carrie 😂

To be quite honest, while I would ADORE a classic country album from Carrie, I don't want it until it's clear her radio career is over no matter what she does. I mean, she's proven herself by now and doesn't need radio but still...I don't wanna think about new Carrie music not being on the radio for 2-3 whole years!

In my head, I equate a covers album to a declining career, which Carrie certainly doesn’t have, even with her (relative) struggles at radio as of late. Moreover, based on how vigorously she has worked behind-the-scenes to place herself in a position where she has label support to venture into producing her own records and selecting radio singles, I doubt she has much interest in using this new platform to essentially produce other people’s work. She hasn’t covered a song on an album since “Look At Me” on Play On. I don’t see that in her career trajectory, as she has always placed artistry and growth as a musician at the forefront of her projects.

But I see your points. I'd rather have the Christmas album anyway. :)

Christmas album? Yes. Covers album? Not yet.
A side project this fall/winter for Christmas music would be an excellent idea for her for several reasons, namely that 1) it won't hurt her momentum with country radio at all and 2) country music audiences eat up holiday music more than most, so I'm sure it would do very well for her with minimal effort. Then, she can hopefully come back strong in 2021 and launch a new album era and get things back on track with country radio.

This era kind of unofficially ended the night of the CMAs. To be honest, the spirit amongst Carrie’s core fans all but died that night, in regards to the life of this era - for me it did, at least. I’m glad they moved forward with DA, but it would have made a much bigger splash at the other end of this album cycle, in my opinion. With that said, I would totally be down for a Christmas project this year; it’s honestly a perfect year and time in her career for it - in between albums and during a time when people will likely be searching for means of entertainment. This would also take up some calendar space as Carrie, and everyone for that matter, will be figuring out what 2021 and beyond looks like in terms touring, promo, etc... In any case, if there was a year to release a Christmas album, 2020 seems to be it in terms of timing for Carrie. Considering we’ve been waiting 15 years for something like this from Carrie, it would surely be a hit.

Does anyone know if this made top 10 on Country Airplay? I know it already hit top 10 on mediabase.

The only way Carrie Underwood gets into the top ten next week if the Thomas Rhett/Jon Pardi duet goes recurrent. The two Warner artists, Gabby Barrett and Blake Shelton are taking their sweet time getting out of the top ten.

As we’re on the topic of Christmas music, I’ll add this: I believe that a one-off, original Christmas single that is sent to radio (country, Hot AC) would be a stronger move than an entire album. That would involve resources that could easily be put towards CU7 (budget, recording time [however minimal], promo, etc). Personally, I’m still fulfilled by the 2008 Carnival Ride re-release that included a five-track Christmas disc.
Additionally, I think one Christmas single would be less burdening on listeners than a full-length album. She could mimic the strategy of Taylor Swift’s “Christmas Tree Farm” and rake in sales and streams more effortlessly on the strength of one song alone versus an entire project.

I imagine it won't be til 2 weeks from now til "Drinking Alone" is in the Top 10 as despite the fact that Thomas Rhett/Jon Pardi are falling faster than Blake/Gwen and Gabby Barrett none of the three are falling at a fast enough pace to be replaced by Carrie Underwood next week in the Top 10 as all 3 should still be Top 10 in spins and audience this time next week. The following week however I expect both Gabby Barrett and Thomas/Jon to be recurrent then.

I can understand your logic and reasoning behind your train of thought, and there are certainly advantages of going down that road. However, I personally would prefer a full length album similar to Kelly Clarkson's Wrapped in Red. So realistically, we won't get CU7 until 2021 no matter what. Between the uncertainty of being able to tour in the foreseeable future, and the fact that she (seemingly) hasn't started working on the album yet, I find it very unlikely we get CU7 until the end of 2021 at the earliest--even if we get nothing between now and then. I also have to disagree regarding your second point. I think releasing a full length Christmas album would incentivize people to listen to it; they could listen to a variety of originals and classic covers that she could put her own spin on. Conversely, if they don't like the one original song Carrie puts out, that's less streaming/sales for her. The nice thing about Christmas music is that people know what they're getting for the most part; "Jingle Bells" is "Jingle Bells" regardless of who is singing it, and short of maybe a few minor arrangement differences, it's the same song regardless of the artist. So, fans of Carrie and/or the song in question would be more likely to stream that song. As far as budget and promo go...she's Carrie Underwood. I don't know that that would be a huge issue. On a selfish note, I'm a big fan of Christmas music and LOVE the 5 track rerelease myself; which is part of why I want more. Lol I'm very curious to see what she can come up with in terms of original songs, and I'd really like at least a good 3-4 original songs that can become future classics. Perhaps we can compromise...I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of an EP or something like that. That would give us a little bit more, room for maybe 2-3 originals and 2-3 covers, while still giving her plenty of time/resources to work on CU7.

Well, apparently we’re going to be getting something from Carrie sooner rather than later in the form of “Tears of Gold,” a collaboration with Latin-American artist David Bisbal. Just confirmed over in the Cry Pretty album thread. Perhaps there is hope for multiple projects yet! ETA: I do agree with a good amount of your sentiments here, although I’m really not sure what direction a Christmas album can take for her. However, you are fair in mentioning that there’s a power in consistency.

I we don't get an new album until 2021 might as well send another single off the current album. I think that may do more harm than good. Listeners have already kind of signaled that they’re done with the current material. In a perfect world, we’d have gotten “Backsliding” and “End Up With You,” but somehow were saddled with a non-event lead single and forgettable follow-up. I definitely think Cry Pretty is an album that is more wholly cohesive than one where songs can be easily selected as stand-alone offerings, as they all work together in symmetry with each other.

To me, the album from beginning to end reads as a story of the breakdown and eventual rebuilding of something, particularly a marriage. (That's of course not to speculate or suggest anything regarding Carrie and Mike; they are a BEAUTIFUL couple and I'm sick of seeing comments on her Instagram from time to time suggesting that she fell in 2017 because Mike pushed her. He is NOT that kind of man.) On the other hand, I'm able to take individual songs (the title track for instance) and apply them to situations/events from my own life. (I've said it here on Pulse a few times; "Cry Pretty" is the song that was a major catalyst in my coming out as transgender) I do also agree with you on dropping a fifth single. I personally would like it (namely "End Up With You" as that's the most summery option imo) but I do think it would harm chances of, say, that Christmas album/EP should that actually be a thing. EUWY as the fifth single from an era that by Carrie's standards has been a bit disappointing (or at least the first half of it) likely wouldn't peak until past December, possibly into January 2021. That would nix the Christmas idea since UMG would be using all resources on getting EUWY to peak.

I meant, more-or-less, that because the tracks support a more nuanced narrative, they work particularly well as a complete piece. Certainly not to discredit each song’s ability to have meaning in and of itself; I was only suggesting a more contextual take on the project as a whole. I definitely believe a great album should not only boast cohesiveness, but can be dismantled track-by-track and maintain a strong artistic identity. The front-end of Taylor Swift’s Red album accomplished that, and 1989 fully embodies the principle. Congratulations on your transition!

The nice thing about Christmas albums is that they're relatively low-risk. If CU7 were to flop, it would be a big deal. (I really don't think it will; I'm just speaking hypothetically here.) If she does release a Christmas album and it flops, while we would be disappointed it ultimately wouldn't mean that much for her. But, if it did well, she would gain the obvious sales/mainstream success and have a potential big hit every year around the holidays. I think she could go a number of different directions with a Christmas album as far as sound goes. Personally, I could see her taking on a Christmas album in a traditional way...meaning, it could potentially double as a Christian/religious album for her. I'm thinking songs similar-ish to JTTW and HGTA in terms of lyrics, but obviously with a Christmas flair--the kind of songs you'd hear when going to church on Christmas Eve. Or, I could see her going the Mariah Carey/Kelly Clarkson route and releasing more of a mainstream pop-leaning Christmas album. Or perhaps (and this may be a little far-fetched) circling back to the "traditional country" album, she takes on the task of releasing an old-country sounding Christmas song. (I really don't know what this would sound like or if anyone has done something similar before...I'm just thinking out loud LOL.) Or, she could even do all of the above with a variety of tracks. It would still be a cohesive unit with the Christmas theme, but that potentially allows her to explore other genres of music outside of mainstream country. I think this would be much easier for her to accomplish with a Christmas album than a "regular" album, and like I said, if it flops, it's way less likely to impact her long-term than if CU7 were to flop.

Wait so has Carrie actually indicated that she might be working on a Christmas album, or are we just doing the most by planning the next several years of her career for her? Lol

But I’ll try not to get my hopes up for now I guess, lol.

As I said previously, though: An original, one-off Christmas single could get me excited. That said, I’m just not a fan of Christmas LPs in general.

I’m the opposite, I literally have a collection of Christmas albums and I have a list of artists I’m waiting on. For me it’s like there’s a hole in Carrie’s discography where a Christmas album should be. Considering her superstar status and her faith, it’s quite surprising we don’t have one yet, tbh. Country radio (and other formats that play holiday music) have played the few Christmas recordings we have from Carrie quite steadily through the years since their release. A full length Christmas record with some originals would be incredibly well received, I think, and it could probably be the holiday album of the year if they play their cards right. What’s cool about hit holiday albums from big name artists is they tend to have legs for years, which is obviously something that would bode well for an artist on Carrie’s caliber.

I’m just of the opinion that if Carrie wanted to release a Christmas collection, she’d have done so already. There is nothing wrong with that concept, per se, but I think that the most successful and memorable Christmas singles—that receive substantial airplay year after year—are either original recordings or one-off covers. “All I Want for Christmas Is You” - Mariah Carey “Last Christmas - Wham! “Santa Claus is Coming to Town (Live)” - Bruce Springsteen “Merry Christmas (War is Over)” - John Lennon “Christmas Wrapping” - The Waitresses “One Christmas Catalogue” - Captain Sensible “Jingle Bell Rock” - Bobby Helms “This Christmas” - Donny Hathaway During the holiday season, every one of these songs is played at least once—if not multiple times—a day, even on the same station. They’re the kind of songs that are immediately recognizable, even if you have no idea who performs them; their longevity can be directly attributed to originality, and in Springsteen’s case, the lively and exciting nature of the recording. Moreover, even though these songs are also covered by other artists, the original recording takes precedence in every station’s rotation. Programmers can plug-and-play with 15 different versions of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside, “O Holy Night,” “Let It Snow,” and the like. But it’s exactly that: plug-and-play. They hardly need to split hairs over which artist’s recording to spin so long as the song itself receives airtime. That is why I don’t think Carrie should be compelled to release a full-length Christmas album, as it would only serve as a drop in the overflowing bucket of Christmas covers fighting for a place in the queue. Caliber of artistry or not, “Let It Snow” is always going to be just that, regardless of the name attached to it. I’m still of the opinion that an original, one-off Christmas single would be the best approach. ETA: If you Google “This Christmas,” there are a couple articles that come up which break down the song’s brilliance and position as a modern Christmas standard. It’s so incomparably good. Damn. That voice! Gets me every time. ETA 2.0: Now y’all have me listening to Christmas music. Thanks for that. 😂 LAST EDIT: I’ve been listening to that Springsteen recording my whole life, and STILL get chills when he eases into the first verse. It’s such a fantastic cover. Ugh. Love him.

For one example, i think many people know who Carrie Underwood is and that she’s very talented but haven’t listened to her music outside of Before he cheats. I think a Christmas album would give her broader appeal and maybe expose her to new fans that will now try her country records in the future

People know Carrie Underwood, her music, and overall profile as an artist. She’s appeared at the beginning of every Sunday Night Football airing since 2012; that alone is unparalleled, far-reaching, and consistent exposure most artists could only pray to have. I don’t think a Christmas album, of all things, is going to boost her brand recognition or expose her to a more diverse demographic with whom she isn’t already acquainted.
