I really font get the hype around Christina’s new song, it just sounds exactly like Say Something except less catchy. Honestly, I may start having ddlz levels of pointless salt towards it if I keep on hearing it.

I wonder if "Blinding Lights" and "Heartless" will get the "Starboy" and "False Alarm" treatment or the "Shape of You" and "Castle on the Hill" treatment, here's hoping for the latter. I agree!

Apple Music hasn't updated the top 1500, just their top 100, so I can't do the full AMAs effect update. Anyway, it's been about 24 hours since the show aired. Looks like the iTunes effect has reached its peak. Spotify doesn't show much effect yet, but today's today would only have a few hours of effect factored in. Tomorrow we'll really get to see how the AMAs effected Spotify. Sucks we won't be able to see Apple Music's effect, but oh well I guess.

I want her to abandon pop completely and go UAC. She can make songs like these in her sleep (The Voice Within, Beautiful, Lift Me Up, and Bound To You), and while flawless, she needs more Impossibles and Like I Do’s. She even got in Rap/Sung this year so there’s clearly support! Even if Aguilera is to go the ‘UAC’ route, she would need support from that format/audience to garner any form of success. The Rhythmic/Urban/Urban Adult-Contemporary audience have rarely, if ever, supported her. Her most Urban-oriented single “Can’t Hold Us Down” was barely a top 20 hit in Rhythmic airplay and didn’t crossover to Urban radio at all which is rather ironic because I specifically remember Hot 97 playing it heavily back in 2003. “Beautiful” was also barely a top 20 hit on that format as was “Ain’t No Other Man”. Pop and HAC have always been her biggest supporters, and they barely play her (solo material) at all now unless she’s attached to a bigger, more current name or they to take a chance on a random collaboration she’s done that’s a hit in other metrics (AGBW: “Say Something”). I agree with you overall though. “Impossible” is literally my favourite song of hers in her entire discography. If she makes more songs similar to that it’d be great. I’m still angry by the fact that “Slow Down Baby” wasn’t officially released during the “B2B” era. 😒 Don’t forget “Lady Marmalade.” That was her real entry point into the Rhythmic/Urban crowds, “Dirrty” despite tanking on U.S radio, and “Can’t Hold Us Down” followed in those foot steps to a lesser degree. Also “Genie In a Bottle” and “What a Girl Wants” we’re both #1 Rythmic hits. How the hell did that happen?

Realized that people who say 'DaBaby songs sound the same' have the point once I realized the beat for 'Baby on Baby' and 'BOP' are near identical.

Also “Genie In a Bottle” and “What a Girl Wants” we’re both #1 Rythmic hits. How the hell did that happen? Rhythmic radio prior to 2001 was relatively similar to Mainstream Top 40 radio, the only difference is that they were much more accepting of Urban-oriented songs starting from the middle-to-late 1990’s. In 1999, Britney Spears’ “Baby, One More Time” charted atop the format but so did TLC’s “No Scrubs”, two completely different songs stylistically. “Genie In A Bottle” and “What A Girl Wants” were much more Rhythmic based than many other Teen-Pop songs at the time and Aguilera’s songs always carried a light Urban aura from the very beginning. In 2001 Rhythmic radio changed their playlists and ultimately became Urban radio’s sister station which is what helped Urban music completely cannibalise the airwaves between 2001-2005/2006. During that time the biggest airplay hits could peak between 110-150M audience impressions from those two formats alone. Ex: • Dilemma: 60M+ Rhythmic / 50M+ Urban • YEAH!: 60M+ Rhythmic / 50M+ Urban • Let Me Love You: 70M+ Rhythmic / 70M+ Urban • We Belong Together: 80M+ Rhythmic / 70M+ Urban • Be Without You: 70M+ Rhythmic / 60M+ Urban Since then the only time they’ve become ‘less’ Urban focused is during the early 2010’s (2009-2011) when Dance/Electro-Pop was dominating but that didn’t last long anyhow.

Regarding AMA's effect, biggest surprise for me is no appearance by Lizzo's Jerome.

Great increases for Selena Gomez, Post Malone and Taylor Swift on Spotify after the AMAs. Lover for instance is up 63 positions.

Many major mainstream artists were rumoured to start their new album eras this month. Only the Weeknd did.

Rage Against the Machine exists as well. It's not a bad genre, more of an underdeveloped one. I'm all for it, rap rock could totally be the new thing.

EDIT: I’d also argue that they were more a rock band than a rap group, they just blended influences of both, but I’d categorize them more in rock than rap. Travis Scott, Post Malone, Juice WRLD, formerly XXXTENTACION, etc are primarily rappers who decided to experiment with the genre. Yes, it’s been done before (see Collision Course) but it hasn’t really been brought back yet, and I think this new wave of rappers can make that comeback happen.

Last table update for the AMAs effect! Note the Apple Music updates are a 2-day update as the top 1500 never updated yesterday. So, my best guess, these positions aren't where the songs peaked on AM due to the AMAs, but they are all (well, most) still up from before the ceremony. Today we finally get to see the effect on Spotify and it actually seems like some songs got a really good boost. You'll see a percentage difference in the table as well for the Spotify worldwide total numbers. That is for the difference between today's increase versus yesterday's increase. "Lover" seems to have gotten a really good boost from the ceremony. There is a new "First Dance Remix" of it as well, which is the arrangement Taylor performed on the AMAs. Lizzo got a really nice Spotify streaming boost for "Jerome" in terms of percentage, but that doesn't look to have translated well to Apple or even remarkably well to digital sales either. "Old Town Road" seems to have received a completely negative effect from the AMAs. Shania's streaming wasn't up as much as I expected it to be, which is sad to see. "Fall on Me" seems to have gotten a really good sales boost, but that hasn't translated into much of a streaming increase. "Don't Start Now" and "Living Proof" both are staying really stable after their boosts. Post Malone has gotten a really solid boost across all three components from his performance. Both songs have now spent time at #1 on iTunes following the performance and "Circles" is up a decent amount in streaming while "Take What You Want" saw a solid streaming boost. Edit: Oops, I've seem to have cut off the headers for the columns on the table. They are, in order, Performers / Track / iTunes / Apple Music / Spotify / Spotify Worldwide Totals

New Weeknd is completely dull, and sounds extremely predictable for him.
I don't expect that to become one of his biggest hits whatsoever.

I think it will do pretty well on streaming, probably better than Blinding Lights since that's a more lowkey pop song while Heartless is a trap banger. Blinding Lights is gonna be the one to get the full radio push though, so I expect it to have the most longevity.

I've listened to 'Heartless' three times now and...it's interesting. It's not the backslide towards tedium that My Dear, Melancholy was, nor is it a watered down version of his aesthetic that his work with Game of Thrones or the Black Panther soundtrack or even his collab with Gesaffelstein was (that collab remains one of Abel's worst ever songs btb).
Beat's not bad. Metro Boomin does his thing and Illangelo back on production for the Weeknd! Hoping he'll have more credits on the new album, would love for the Trilogy sound to comeback and receive the attention it should've gotten back when House of Balloons dropped.
Lyrics-wise, it's the standard hedonism but am I the only one who noticed the dual nature of his vocal tone? The verses when he's in his lower tone, he sounds more confident and braggadocious but when he goes into a higher register for the chorus, it's like he sobers and is now rejecting the lifestyle. Especially when the beat drops and then it's right back to the bragging. So yeah, good song, I expect this to dominate the charts starting 12/14/19.
