She did. Though they undermined it a little in the article by mentioning all sorts of covers, remakes or samples that hit #1, like "La Bamba", "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me", or even fricking "7 Rings".you know it's iconic when it still gets them bitches talking!! If 7 rings is iconic less than a year later, La Bamba must be an icon monster

congrats Mariah!! this is fun to see and AIWFCIY is easily one of the most iconic songs of all time. that said, i never want to see this happen again. if rules aren't put into place, there's nothing preventing this from happening each and every year with AIWFCIY eventually seeing an insane weeks at #1 record purely via re-entering every year. i also don't like what it does to the rest of the charts, essentially serving as a multiple week, high impact album bomb. for a few weeks, the only thing that matters is assorted 50+ year old holiday staples, which is a fundamental failure for a chart focused on what's new and hot. Billboard should 100% (and likely will) set a rule against this in the next couple years imo. Personally Iβm torn on it. I see peopleβs points but I kind of like the shake up it brings the charts. In the streaming era, the Hot 100 can be so static. How often are songs locked into their positions at the upper rungs of the chart for weeks on end with very little movement? I like the variety this brings the chart and itβs fun when you have Brenda Lee and Post Malone fighting for chart spots!

I love how fresh the top 10 is (aside from Lucid Dreams and the Christmas songs). Circles being the song with the most time in the top 10 (except Lucid Dreams) with only 14 weeks is quite surprising as it feels like there's been a 20+ week song in the top 10 as long as I can remember.

Can we also talk about how, assuming "AIWFCIY" gets another week at #1 this season, 17 of Mariah's 19 #1s will have been multiple week #1s? That's crazy.

Hopefully this is the last year for This Christmas music being allowed on the chart.

I think there should just be a flat out ban of Christmas songs below #25 unless they are new appearances and then the Billboard team can handle it on a case-by-case basis. Like it's fair to have songs like AIWFCIY charting but other basic songs are blocking a lot of new music from charting.

i think they should ban every non christmas song from charting, it's unfair because it prevents new christmas songs from charting

Mariah likely threatened Billboard with extreme violence if they listed any age-related accomplishments. When she set plenty of actual records, no need for Billboard to mention her being the second oldest female to hit #1. Does it even count anyway though since she was 24 when she recorded it? Like if White Christmas went to number one would we consider Bing Crosby the oldest male to hit the top since he would be 116 now?

It is the Hot 100 after all.

Then wouldn't that exclude hits by Lizzo and other iconic hits that re-entered the Hot 100 posthumously?

They are recycled tunes that chart every year and will probably do so for the foreseeable future. Billboard created recurrent rules to stop the charts from becoming stagnant. Why can't they do this for Christmas songs?

Yeah, the good thing about the flooding of Christmas songs is that they kill the older songs into the void and give new peaks for younger songs after they disappear.

If Xmas songs didn't chart, how many songs are really prevented from hitting H100? Maybe 10 or 15 max during the 2-3 peak holiday weeks that wouldn't chart at the very bottom of H100. After all, with streaming there's a lot of 'post-peak' songs that are just kinda sitting between spots 26-50 that have been charting for 20+ weeks (the recurrent rule for 50). And those songs would likely get a boost during Year-End countdown week, so they'd still 'block' these hypothetical low chart debuts.
Bottom line: Keeping Xmas songs out would prevent a few songs that may have charted between 85-100. No loss. Anything higher would debut anyway. Historically, not that many 'new' songs are actively promoted during the last 2-3 weeks in December. But like Bombs, Xmas songs flush out the charts and open up a lot of slots in the following weeks.

Niall Horan's "Put a Little Love On Me" debuts at #9 on Digital Song Sales, but appears to fail to have charted on the Hot 100 or Bubbling Under.

Ok, so people are mad because Christmas songs are preventing singles from debuting at #89 or something?

This Christmas songs shouldnβt be alllwed to chart discussion is exhausting. Donβt you all ever tire of yourselves? How can you not be tired being yourselves?
