Reading the writeups in the year end magazines (most are available online) can help some figure out what songs defined the year as the year concluded. Should give a better picture of how the year was perceived at the time

As someone who wasn’t alive at the time, I feel like the legacy of 1990 is that we finally had a rap song hit #1, and that song was f**king Ice Ice Baby. Let’s see all of the boxes that song checks off
-was by a white person getting more success than any of the black artists who pioneered the genre✅ -stole, not sampled, the entire beat from a classic rock song, and then tried to pass it off as his own✅ -tried to be “cool,” but was stiff and lame in every way imaginable✅ -fails to even meet the bass line of competence in either his flow, word play or subject matter✅ -was a very sterilized, “clean” version of the genre✅
1990 proved that the spirit of Pat Boone was alive and well. We could have had Wild Thing, Bust a Move, Just a Friend or U Can’t Touch This be the first rap #1, all of which would have been perfectly fitting, all of which were hits before Ice Ice Baby, but no, we had to give Vanilla Ice that honor. And as if that wasn’t bad enough, he put two strikes on any white rapper who would come after him for the next 20 years.

Yeah, along with a weird year for rock in between the demise of hair metal and the rise of grunge and the stronghold adult contemporary had on pop, Ice Ice Baby achieving that honor is probably one of the biggest reasons 1990 is so reviled by music critics in hindsight.

It's probably not but an interesting thought is whether under this format "Poison" is the lowest peaking song to ever make the top 10 up until this point. It certainly beats anything from the 80's or 60's and so it is possible
I think overall it's a couple #8's like Before He Cheats, Congratulations, Run-Around & Over My Head (Cable Car) unless I'm forgetting something or unless "Why Me" holds its position in the top 10

And for completionism's sake here's the inaugural year end hot 100, the 1959 list! Not a bad year (no Pat Boone or Anita Bryant at least!) but probably the one where the songs blend together the most and it really does feel like digging up a relic, seriously there's a choir's performance of a Civil War era battle anthem on here and TWO SONGS by Alvin and the freaking Chipmunks. But it would feel wrong to skip this year entirely so here we go! 1

Random bit of chart history, "Robbin' The Cradle" by Tony Bellus was the longest chart run on hot 100 at the time by being the first song to make it to half a year, surpassing "Chantilly Lace" which had a 25 week run that began on the hot 100's first week. The 26-week mark was tied at least three times but not surpassed until The Twist hit 39 weeks on its second run. However sadly the song is absolutely terrible and it's about exactly what it sounds like so honestly we're better off just pretending that Mack The Knife was the first to half a year & erasing Robbin' The Cradle from the collective memory.

Finally updated the playlist tonight with the 1959 songs. Note that two songs, So Many Ways and Just as Much as Ever, are not available on Spotify (at least the specific versions that are on the YE).

Pop icon Timmy T at #4 you love to see it!
I'll have 1992 done soon
Also how close was "Finally?" it had 14 weeks with a peak of 8 so I'm a bit surprised it missed

Finally was at 148k. Just a few spots outside the top 110.
Side note: I’ve cut out a lot of incredible songs over the course of doing these lists. So adding Let’s Talk About Sex, Walking in Memphis and especially Enter Sandman has to be the biggest W of this entire endeavor.

Yikes, that might be the worst top 4 we've had on these updated YEs yet (I'd say top 5, but #5 is literally one of Mariah's best songs). All of those are mediocre at best. At least we got a few quality tracks replacing some of the terrible songs that either made 1990 or got caught. With that said, 7 more songs have been added to the playlist to round out the last (mostly) pre-SoundScan year other than the 1970s (would be 8, but Playground by Another Bad Little Fad Creation is not available on Spotify). Looking forward to inverse's 1992 list to finally close out the '90s!

2016 is up there too, almost all of the songs in the top 4 have made it on my worst list of that year.

The only other year with a new YE top 4 that comes close to 1991's in mediocrity for me is 2014, only somewhat redeemed by the alright #1 of that year Happy.

I think Mariah had the most top 5 year end songs out of any artists...
Also Wilson Philips were not playing 1990-1991!
I'm also surprised at Karyn White @ 11...I wonder if people remember that song being huge

I'm also surprised at Karyn White @ 11...I wonder if people remember that song being huge Wilson Phillips were to the 90s as Taio Cruz was to the 2010s. A few huge hits at the start of the decade before instantly vanishing.

When I first came across the name "Wilson Phillips" when looking through the original 1990 YE that their song Hold On topped, I thought it would be some solo R&B or adult contemporary guy that I would find average at best. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that they're an all-female pop trio that made some pretty sweet songs in the early '90s, kind of like a version of The Chicks if they ever went full-on acoustic pop. Apparently they're still together in some form, but I guess people lost interest in their music after Nirvana burst onto the scene.
As for Karyn White, after listening to her #1 hit, my one takeaway is that she sounds almost exactly like Janet Jackson, who was a massive name at the time. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if people back then thought it actually was Janet singing.

Funny cause Karyn White's signature song is Superwoman and not Romantic...

Madonna came so close to racking up an insane 14 year streak in this format from 1989 to 2002 but she missed 1999 and Beautiful Stranger was #104 that year by my calculations
As it is Rihanna's streak is still the record holder I think except its only 13 years long now instead of 14. None of this will matter in a decade tho when Drake gets like 20 years in a row

And finally to finish up the 90's decade, the 1992 list. This will probably be the last one I ever do & we're ending on IMO a really great year with a ton of classics. One thing to remember is that unlike the 60's and 80's charts which were sort of overwrites of Billboard's lists, this one is an attempt at real points & so all songs that were in the middle of the year with no difference in weeks are gonna be in the same order as in the original list. I'll also be once again including the position on the original in the 2nd column. Enjoy!

Songs from the original that missed here
Made 1991 -It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday -Set Adrift On Memory Bliss -When A Man Loves A Woman -Blowing Kisses In The Wind -That's What Love Is For
Caught Between Years -No Son Of Mine -Wildside -Keep Coming Back -Keep It Comin' -I Can't Make You Love Me
losing a Bonnie Raitt classic hurts but we also get rid of four songs from my Worst list that year (although two of them just shifted to 1991) and adding "Layla" and "Walking On Broken Glass" and even "Nu Nu" are all pretty damn good upgrades IMO

lol at two 70’s songs (Bohemian Rhapsody and Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me) making this Year-End.

Aw, what a shame that Wildside got caught. How else are we supposed to know about a hit song where Mark Wahlberg as Marky Mark tries to educate the listener about the horrors of racism in America over an egregious Lou Reed sample, complete with the classic line “Blame it on a black man, what the heck?”
Anyway, hard to believe we’ve already completed 5 whole decades of these new YE’s, including every year except for the 1970s! I’ll update the playlist later tonight.

Is anyone going to do one for the 70s?

Yeah, I’m gonna get to it next year. I need a break for this year, and even if I didn’t, my schedule is gonna be way too busy for this to be any kind of priority. Probably will create some in my downtime though so it’ll be ready to go next year
