Is there a thread or link that lists the annual Billboard Year End encompassing dates?
For example: The specific cut-off dates for each of the years? (sometimes starting in November (!)

I don’t believe so. I know that from 85-91, there wasn’t a steadfast date. The qualifications were that a song peaked from December of the previous year up through November of the current year, and every week of a song’s run were included up through the final week of December of the current year. Which is why the biggest song of the year from 86-89 was always a song that peaked in December of the previous year; it got its entire chart run counted. Before then, the chart year started the first week of November. And based on the 1980 chart, it may have been even earlier than that for the 70s. I didn’t test this, but it seems like the chart year started the first week of October 79, ended the last of September 80, and then they skipped the month of October and didn’t start the 81 chart until November. Which is how a song like Another One Bites the Dust only finishes in the 60s. I’ll be able to figure out for sure if that happened when I work on the 70s charts

The weeks it was #1 on the chart didn’t count for anything, lol.

mikerivera, if that is true (and I seem to remember something like it) regarding 1980 starting the first week of October '79... that's borderline dishonest!

And finally the 1960 list, with a totally random 9 week #1 and generally much longer chart runs. Compare this year with 1965 where there were only two songs that even got above 15 weeks. So yeah if I didn't multiply this list down by a little then it would totally dominate the middle portion of the decade chart.

The original list is the only one from the 60's that included December weeks from the previous year so for the songs that missed I'm gonna split them up
Made 1959: #93 - Heartaches My The Number
Caught between years: #56 - The Village Of St. Bernadette #66 - It's Time To Cry #73 - Among My Souvenirs #100 - Sandy
Calculated out: #82 - Lady Luck #83 - Step By Step #84 - Happy-Go-Lucky Me #88 - O Dio Mio #90 - Beatnik Fly #96 - Little Bitty Girl
Next closest 10 101
| The Crests

I know laughing at the crazy trends of past times is a bit of a cheap shot but I am not over the fact that somebody made a song titled "Beatnik Fly". I just picture this business man in a yellow suit shouting "Ethel I've had it with this beatnik fly buzzing around now gimme the spatula"

That 1960 Top 5 was something special. I doubt any other year had 3 all-great hits like Theme From a Summer Place, It’s Now or Never, and The Twist.

That 1960 Top 5 was something special. I doubt any other year had 3 all-great hits like Theme From a Summer Place, It’s Now or Never, and The Twist. 1983 had Every Breath You Take, What a Feeling, Billie Jean, Total Eclipse of the Heart and Beat It. 1984 had When Doves Cry, Jump, What’s Love Got to Do With It and Footloose. 1987 had Alone, Livin on a Prayer, Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now, I Wanna Dance With Somebody and La Bamba. 1980 had Call Me, Another One Bites the Dust, Another Brick in the Wall and Crazy Little Thing Called Love. 2004 had Yeah, Burn and If I Ain’t Got You. 2019 had Old Town Road, Sunflower and Bad Guy. 2020 had Blinding Lights, The Box, Circles, Rockstar and Don’t Start Now. So yeah, I’d say there were some other years that had 3+ all time great hits like that

So this is gonna be the last one that I post for now. These were fun but I think I need a serious break. I will do two more, a 1992 and a 1959, but plz give me a bit for those I just used all my enthusiasm up for now.
However before that we can't finish a decade without a decade end list! Not sure where I will post it yet, maybe just here.

Yeah here it is the 1960's decade end chart, starting from the first week of January 1960 and ending in December 1969. It's been suggested that I use an ascending multiplier but the problem is I'm dumb and I don't know what that is and also it turned out pretty balanced anyway, the start & end just needed to be tweaked downward by a little. So it's x.95 for 1968-69 and x.9 for 1960-62. Points are just gonna be the same as they were in the single year charts beyond that, although some of the numbers of songs that split their runs between two years will go up.

I've been enjoying this thread and feel compelled to comment. I appreciate the effort each of you have made to compile these yearly charts. It's an interesting, more accurate snapshot of the biggest hits of each calendar year.
Some of you may be under the impression that there are only a few followers, but I suspect that, like me, there are many others who are fascinated.
Thanks again.

That 1960 Top 5 was something special. I doubt any other year had 3 all-great hits like Theme From a Summer Place, It’s Now or Never, and The Twist. I mean to each their own but I can think of way better top 5's than that, just from my 1960's charts the top 5 in 1964 is miles better. I agree there are better quality Top 5’s/YE’s, but in shear strength of heavy hitters, nothing beats 1960. In terms of quality, I’d have to say 2004 was the best Top 5/YE of them all (so far - I have to see the 70s lists first).

Ummmm hey guys can we not do this? This is supposed to just be a thread of old charts can't we just get along & share stories about how our minds were all blown when we heard Diana Ross for the first time? Although I'm late to this post I do remember the first time I heard Diana Ross. It was the cover of Aint No Mountain High Enough and I liked it as a kid.

Is there a thread or link that lists the annual Billboard Year End encompassing dates? For example: The specific cut-off dates for each of the years? (sometimes starting in November (!) For recent years I believe that the Wikipedia articles of the Billboard YE lists have the dates of the chart year listed. So look at those.

This wasn’t the first time listening to Diana Ross, but I remember when I went to Myrtle Beach for the first time in August 2008, as I was exiting a restaurant, Diana’s “Last Time I Saw Him” started to play. I stayed outside the restaurant to listen to the song before heading to the car.

The 1990 list. It looks like Billboard started changing the cutoff rules again; this time having a hard cutoff in December of the current year. But they still allowed songs that peaked in the previous year's December to have their full runs counted. Rank | Song | Artist | Peak | Top 10 | Hot 100 | Points | 1 | Nothing Compares 2 U | Sinead O'Connor | #1 (4 weeks) | 10 | 21 | 465,320 | 2 | Vision of Love | Mariah Carey | #1 (4 weeks) | 7 | 22 | 448,530 | 3 | Vogue | Madonna | #1 (3 weeks) | 8 | 24 | 438,670 | 4 | It Must Have Been Love | Roxette | #1 (2 weeks) | 9 | 25 | 434,820 | 5 | Hold On | Wilson Phillips | #1 | 9 | 25 | 433,870 | 6 | Love Takes Time | Mariah Carey | #1 (3 weeks) | 7 | 16 | 404,240 | 7 | Poison | Bell Biv DeVoe | #3 | 10 | 22 | 395,640 | 8 | Escapade | Janet Jackson | #1 (3 weeks) | 8 | 17 | 390,440 | 9 | Blaze of Glory | Jon Bon Jovi | #1 | 8 | 21 | 379,780 | 10 | Opposites Attract | Paula Abdul & The Wild Pair | #1 (3 weeks) | 7 | 20 | 378,720 | 11 | Close to You | Maxi Priest | #1 | 7 | 27 | 372,230 | 12 | Black Velvet | Alannah Myles | #1 (2 weeks) | 7 | 24 | 369,250 | 13 | Release Me | Wilson Phillips | #1 (2 weeks) | 7 | 22 | 366,260 | 14 | Cradle of Love | Billy Idol | #2 | 8 | 24 | 365,060 | 15 | Hold On | En Vogue | #2 | 7 | 25 | 363,650 | 16 | Do Me! | Bell Biv DeVoe | #3 | 9 | 22 | 356,980 | 17 | She Ain't Worth It | Glenn Medeiros ft. 1990 is just one of those years that didn't truly have a year-defining song.

You know, a lot of people call 1990 one of the worst years in Billboard history, but I never got that impression because there were plenty of gems on the official YE to balance out the bad. Now that the new YE is out, my opinion on the year is mostly intact. Sure, we lost the great Free Fallin’ and Rhythm Nation and got the terrible Because I Love You, From A Distance and The Way You Do… instead, but I’m mostly OK with the new #1 (which I think is a tad overrated, but it’s on the GOAT list, so it makes more sense this way).
Oh, and Cherry Pie missed! Hooray!!
(P.S. I’ll edit the playlist tomorrow morning)

Started working on the 91 list, and I can already tell the switch to Nielsen SoundScan is going to drastically alter this list, even though that change will only apply to the last 5 weeks. Like just look at this chart run. I’m still going to make the list, but just know that it shouldn’t be taken too seriously Attachment Deleted

1990 had U Can’t Touch This, Nothing Compares 2 U, Vogue, Ice Ice Baby and Vision of Love. All could be considered year defining songs!
