Everyone submitting their favorite version of the classic Buggles song. How about some Itao and Eurobeat covers. Both female vocals Bon Ton - Video Killed The Radio Star (The Buggles Cover)and for those who love super fast music. Actually her vocals were not hyped at all, but the synths are still 155+ bpms. Maybe some of you recall this sleeve art online? it was back when I was makeing cover art for Eurobeat songs. Tina Ray - Video Killed The Radio StarBack to the list.10. ABC - The Look Of LoveA certified classic. Could be the biggest New Romantic Sophistipop song ever. 1982 was the year when I first started grade school so I knew how to write numbers and you guessed it I started to compile my favorite 20 songs of the week. Towards the end of 1982 this was my #1 song. I always admired how ABC could insert that classical music vibe with the strings and pianos, and still appeal to the younger audience. 9. Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boyback then I had no idea what the song was about, but I knew that it had a sad vibe. The synths were not jumpy and happy, but rather haunting and sort of melancholy, but the bassline drives it forward as to say there was hope for the sad character in the video. When you got into music as young as I did it was mainly about the instrumental compositions of the songs and the vocals. Jimmy Sommerville's unique vocals inspired a lot of big High Energy and Eurobeat composers. Including Dave Rodgers, Mark Farina and even Gino Caria to try their hand at that falsetto style. 8. Erasure - A Little RespectAnotherone of the classic Synthpop songs of the 80's easily makes my top 10. We have ranked this one quite a few times before and still remains in my top 10.. Nice to see it's consistency among the PULSE community as well. 7. The Buggles - Video Killed The Radio StarI was a bit too young to actually remember this one when it was popular. I remember it being famous for being the first song ever played on MTV, but I didn't recall it on the radio. Years later I compiled my 1979 and 1980 charts and gave this one some Top 20 action. 6. The Gap Band - You Dropped A Bomb On MeThis is actually my favorite song from the Gap Band. They also had "Early In The Morning". Both great songs that I would rank a lot higher on a Funk /R&B RD. This RD just featured way too many classic New Wave and Rock Jams that I had to upgrade. From the last five songs I would love "Bizzare Love Triangle" to win, but I actually think "True Faith" might come out ahead. "Bizzare Love Triangle" might be a tad too High Energy for some.

Solid top 10. I'm hoping that New Order (Bizarre Love Triangle) or PSB pull off the win. My guesses:
1. Bizarre Love Triangle 2. It's A Sin 3. Super Freak 4. Just Like Heaven 5. True Faith
Though looking at this list with two New Order songs in the Top 5, I wonder how Joy Division "Love Will Tear Us Apart" would have done in this rankdown. That song is even more quintessential 80's than Bizarre Love Triangle.

10. The Look Of Love (2): This is a gem, one of my favorite synthpop, sophistipop hits. I remember loving this at first listen back in the day. I also loved the video --and the fashion! It was a big hit back home, and even though I wasn't yet doing my personal chart, I remember choosing my favorite songs of the year, and this being a clear top 5 -maybe #1- of the year. In any case, this was one of my favorite songs of the decade, and a song that I still listen and sing to often :) The lush production, slick musicality (piano, strings, synths, percussion), and strong, intense lead vocals (well complemented by backing vocals), with great melody throughout the song -including that bridge with semi-operatic vibe and then whisper vocals). A bit sad this didn't make the top 5 of this list, but well, at least it made the top 10.
9. Smalltown Boy (6): Another great synthpop song. I don't remember hearing this in the 80s. I remember watching the powerful video a few times in the 90s, and then hearing/watching it again thanks to September's sample of it. SB is a great example of lush production, with some vibrant but also melancholic melody and instrumentation (great combo of synths and percussion), and most importantly Jimmy's outstanding, emotional vocals. He was a unique male vocalist in the 80s that deserves some more recognition. First time I heard him was in my favorite version of Don't Leave Me This Way -as The Communards' lead vocalist.
8. A Little Respect (2): Another great synthpop gem. My favorite Erasure song, and one of my most heard 80s song. Interestingly, this was a semi-flop back home in 1988, after Chains of Love was a minor hit. However, once Erasure got a few hits back home with Blue Savannah, Oh L'Amour, Gimme Gimme Gimme and Stop!, one of out top pop stations played Chains of Love (12") and ALR, both becoming much more popular and this one becoming a staple in pop radios stations. I love that this song's carried by Andy's emotional and powerful vocals, supported by effective but understated music, except for the few seconds of the short but effective solo intro and bridge.
7. Video Killed The Radio Star (7): Great, forward-looking synth pop song, considering that it was released in 1979! It was a big hit back home and a song with great recurrent airplay. I love the combination of happy synths and all, with the melancholy of the female vocals in the chorus and especially the bridge. Great production and melody that I still use :)
6. You Dropped A Bomb On Me (11): This is quite a strong funk song, with great instrumentation, some rock influence, and strong melody. This its my favorite Gap Band song, but it just couldn't compete with all the favorite songs that were in my top 10.

Songs 5 to 10 were only separated by 21 points. They were really close. And song 4 is only 10 points ahead. 4th song is the 2nd and final song to not have any bottom 10 ranks. 7th lowest SD and no number 1s. It also spent a few lists at 2.
In fact, the entire top 3 each has a rank of 35 or lower. So someone will not be happy.

Wondering if overplay is part of the issue To make it interesting. The top 3 songs each have 2 bottom 10 ranks. Won't say which is which but one of them has a 31 and a 35, another has a 32 and a 35, and another has a 33 and a 36. jtd Thee Stallion is 2 of these.

So we are at the top 3 now, Bizarre Love Triangle vs It's A Sin vs Super Freak. One of these songs does NOT have a number 1 rank. Not going to spoil if it is next or 2nd or 1st. No spoilers for the top 3. Will just be revealing. :)

Top 2 Stats - One of these has 5 number 1s and the other has 3. Both of them have 4 bottom half ranks. But were they really close in points? Let's find out shortly.

The Rankdown is over!!!
Bizarre Love Triangle was first place the entire way from start to finish. But, it was not always a blowout, it was close to losing it's first place spot a few times in a middle. It's A Sin was 2nd pretty much almost the whole way too, coming within 10 points of 1st a few times. The Look Of Love and True Faith were 2nd a bit at the start before the top 2 got settled.
At one point Bizarre Love Triangle had the 6th highest SD while being 1st place.
My next Rankdown could be a bit more basic and more mainstream. 50 songs that made 80s year end lists that I enjoy and love a lot. I won't include songs that made top 10 in the 80s Rankdowns so the winner won't be as predictable. I should make the Rankdown maybe in a few days. If anyone is interested in that, let me know.
Closeness should come later in the day. Thanks everyone for participating!

Deserving winner! Thank you for hosting, this really brought a lot of nostalgia as a lot of these my parents have introduced to me in some form.
Also I’d be interested in that rankdown!

After scoring its second rankdown win in 2 tries, we can safely say BLT is one of Pulse's favorite songs

I would have been okay with "It's A Sin" winning, but I'm very glad at "Bizarre Love Triangle" winning, instead. Thanks for hosting, @slipperyslope! Despite being unmotivated at the start, I'm glad I participated as this was a lot of fun!

Thanks @slipperyslope for a great rankdown. This may be my best ever rankdown showing, usually I'm in the bottom. Interested in seeing the final results.
