I'm sorry but the talking verses in "I'll Go On Loving You" just does not work, it makes me cringe listening to it. Yea it has always been a polarizing song for that reason I think. I personally have always loved this song and especially the overall arrangement as it gives it some mystique.

I really don't know how "I'll Go On Loving You" made it so far in this RD, the talking in the verse is dreadful and the chorus is monotonous and repetitive. The instrumentation is pretty but doesn't save the song in this case, the rest is just too unbearable.
"I'd Love You all Over Again" is a pretty solid country tune, I get why its out now but wouldn't have minded seeing it at least in the top 40 lol. At least.

Wow, I never even considered that my #1 might be the one on the chopping block. I figured it would settle in somewhere around #20. "Song For the Life" is such a gorgeous song, and one that means more to me as the years go by. I'm guessing familiarity worked against it, though there are a handful of songs that are still alive that just confound me.

Oook lots to catch up on!!
I'm very happy my top 10 remains unscathed! Though the 2 top 20 losses hurt more than a bit!
Let's see here:
65) "I Still Like Bologna": Fine enough for an album track, it has nice production but how they chose this over "Never Loved Before" or "1976" I have no idea. No surprise it's first out. (57)
64) "It's Alright To Be A Redneck": I've always liked this way more than I think I should, it's catchy and honestly I find it fun. Given it came from his weakest album imo I didn't mind it as a single. (48)
63) "Hard Hat And A Hammer": Given how many songs Alan has celebrating the working class this one was a little tired coming from him at this point in his career. I loved the sound of the anvil strike as it was unique but that's the only truly interesting thing about this song. (58)
62) "It's Just That Way": While this sounds pleasant it is incredibly forgettable, not necessarily bad though. (53)
61)"Country Boy": Horrible and beneath Alan's talent level, this felt like he was pandering and I hate it. (65)
60) "Work In Progress": This being a single is one that constantly slips my mind, there's nothing wrong with it, a good album track but there were many other choices on the album I would've loved to make it to radio over this. (59)
59) "Too Much Of A Good Thing": Ah the first loss that hits me ina bad way. I love how beautifully traditional this one is, and even the almost too simple lyrics don't bother me like they did some. (32)
58) "www.Memory": When I was 9 this sounded fun, by the time I was 11 I found it cheesy and dated. This is the first single of his that I felt like he was trying to pander ("Country Boy" being the 2nd). (63)
57) "USA Today": Wouldn't have been my choice for the final single but I did enjoy how this one sounded on radio and thought it was pretty clever. (55)
56) "Sissy's Song": So I know for a fact I like this one more than I probably would as it became a single right around the time a teacher I was very very close with in high school passed away. My sister was also close with her and was friends with her daughter so the loss hit my family pretty hard. This song was a comfort for us during that time. (37)

55) "Long Way To Go": I always thought of this one as Alan on cruise control, not so much pandering to radio but close. It's still catchy and I can enjoy it from time to time. (60)
54) "The Talkin' Song Repair Blues": Wonderfully fun and perfectly written, this is such a great song and while it made a head-scratcher of a single I'm glad Alan took the chance to give it time to shine. (35)
53) "Like Red On A Rose": I remember when this came out being thrown for a loop that Alan sounded so different. I completely understand the polarizing nature of the album but I loved how his voice sounded surrounded by this style Alison created for him. Almost made his vocals sound more warm. (25)
52) "Right On The Money": Much like "Work In Progress" I tend to forget this was a single. It's a much better song and I do enjoy it a lot more but it still gets lost for me among his singles. Which is slightly odd to me as it's production and melody does stand out.(46)
51) "Where I Come From": I like the production and the melody here, but lyrically this is somehow both weird and cliched at the same time. Still I don't mind hearing it. (51)
50) "A Woman's Love": This is the first big surprise for me, I was thinking this had a good shot at top 30. Simple, romantic and beautifully produced this is a solid Alan tune! (36)
49) "Jim And Jack And Hank": While I would've loved for this to go higher, it outlasted where I thought it would rank and for that I thank you all! This is fun, catchy and traditional. It didn't fit radio when it came out but I still think it was a shame they didn't bring it a little higher. (24)
48) "A House With No Curtains": I love this one, like it killed me a little to see it out here and to not include it in my top 10. The parent album is my favorite of Alan's and this is just one of the many perfect songs from the album. It felt like a modern day "Hello Walls" to me. (11)
47) "The Blues Man": Another hit to my top 20! The Under The Influence album was fantastic and this was one of the stand outs. Alan took the song and more than made it his own. He sounds so at home on this it's hard to believe he didn't write it. (18)
46) "Good Time": Giving radio what they wanted in an uptempo tune, this fails to really bring anything unique to his discography but it's inoffensive. (61)

45) "That'd Be Alright": Among his more forgettable singles this one at least for me had a memorable hook that carried it to 52 on my list. (52)
44) "Blue Blooded Woman": Try as I might I was never able to fully get into this one. When I listen to it it leaves no impression and honestly doesn't sound like Alan. (64)
43) "I'll Go On Loving You": I appreciate that he tried something different and take out the talking parts and it sounds wonderful, I just never got over how much it stands out. (62)
42) "Song For The Life": Rodney Crowell is an incredible writer, and while this isn't among my favorites of his it's still a damn good song. It's another that Alan just fits right into and embodies so well. An odd choice for a single even back then, it was maybe too subtle for radio. Still became a good sized hit though. (41)
41) "I'd Love You All Over Again": While not one of his best, this still captured a lot of the ease Alan came to be known for. "Here In The Real World" maybe should've been his first #1, but this was a good showcase for what he'd bring to the genre in the coming years. (49)

"Long Way To Go" is catchy and fun, but also kinda forgettable. Definitely doesn't compare to most of the rest of his career. I could never actually remember how it went back when it was a single. 55 was a good spot for it to leave. "The Talkin' Song Repair Blues" is such a well-written song! The story is unique and excellent. It was definitely a bit of a head scratcher as a single choice, but sometimes it's nice to have an unexpected single that defies the usual sound and yet still manages to do pretty well! "Like Red On A Rose" is good, but definitely on the boring side of his singles. Not to mention overplay ran it so far into the ground that I can barely listen to it anymore. That's why it's my #63... "Right On The Money" is another Alan classic! It does have some borderline cringey lyrics ("You're the best cook that's ever melted cheese"... Lmao), so I am not surprised to see it leaving now. I love it a lot, but what a RANDOM song to get a #1 rank!! "Where I Come From" is a HOT MESS. The chorus is obnoxious, and the lyrics are problematic in SO many ways. Y'all already pointed out the completely unwarranted transsexual joke. But I have also always been particularly aggravated by the extremely loose rhyme scheme. Like, Tulsa and salsa do NOT rhyme, and I want to have a SERIOUS conversation with whoever thought it would be a good idea to try...

Just like "Like Red On A Rose", "A Woman's Love" is on the more boring side of his hits that was also simultaneously driven into the ground so badly that I can still barely listen to it. Most of his catalog has absolutely no burn rate with me, so the ones that do really did NOT do well on my list... Lol
I am super impressed with "Jim And Jack And Hank" managing to last into the top 50! This song is quite good! Lots of great lyrics that describe peoples' personalities in very few words (Like, I love the part where he calls his dad all sad about his wife leaving, only for his dad to answer the phone like, "Son, you just woke me from my nap!" 😂
I am SHOCKED by some of the extreme love for "A House With No Curtains"! It's a good song, but Alan has soooooo many great songs to which this one could never hold a candle. #48 is a perfect position for it to be leaving.
I will second all of the positive things that have been said about "The Blues Man"! Alan's voice is like rich, warm butter here. I also feel like this song utilizes blues scales in ways that are super underutilized in popular music. The lyrics also remind me a lot of "Sweet Music Man", only much more in-depth and emotional. You can totally feel that narrator's pain in Alan's delivery here! This feels like one that will do MUCH better in its album rankdown than it did in the singles rankdown.
I was NOT expecting "Good Time" to be trashed here!!!! OMG!! This song is one of the catchiest, funnest songs in Alan's catalog! That whole line dance vibe was so fresh in the 2008 country landscape, and I really feel like this string of hits for him came at the perfect time to give him a final boost of relevance. (Shame he couldn't release "Never Loved Before" and gotten Martina one last #1 before they both plummeted into obscurity with the new decade 😂 )

Seeing how "Too Much Of A Good Thing", "Work In Progress", etc. got treated, I am honestly surprised "That'd Be Alright" lasted as long as it did! This is another one that gives me hella nostalgia for the times when I started actively following country radio. It is not Alan's best song by any means, but is certainly one of those that I immediately think of when I hear his name! SHE LOVES THE VIOLIN, I LOVE THE FIDDLE!!!! I love Alan's debut I can't believe this song was a flop!! It's right in his wheelhouse, while also being really unique and different. "I'll Go On Loving You" is so over-hated! I actually love the way Alan delivers the lyrics, even in the verses. His voice sounds so tender and romantic. The lyrics are a little shocking, but that just makes the romantic tension of the song that much more palpable. I'm actually impressed this lasted into the top 45 though, knowing how Pulse feels about this song. "Song For The Life", similar to "A House With No Curtains", is one of his ballads that kinda gets lost in the shuffle for me. I do like it a lot, but I think now is a good time for it to be leaving. And again, a SUPER random #1 pick!! "I'd Love You All Over Again" is just such a classic, straightforward country love song. Right in the middle of Alan's catalog feels about right for it because he put out so many great songs, but this really is a great song!

I think it might be possible to have this wrapped up by this weekend so I thought I'd go ahead and jump into the top 40 this evening! Before I do, though, here are a few stats for the next five songs: - 52 Points separate #40 from #36
- Not one but two studio albums will be eliminated
- Seven top 10 rankings will bow out
- No top 5 loses or #1 loses for this set, so y'all are safe there!
- Collectively four bottom 5 rankings will exit

Stats for #40:
The first song to leave inside the top 40 is the first loss from one of Alan's studio albums and also another #1 hit. This did seem to be a rather polarizing song overall as it garnered a lone top ten (from yours truly and my second top ten loss) as well as rankings from everything in between all the way down to a lone bottom 5.

The next song to exit is one of Alan's more recent offerings which remained a consistent top 40 contender during its run. Of the five songs leaving tonight this has the most top ten rankings with it accumulating three including a near top 5. This did not receive any bottom 5's.

Our next to exit mostly hung around inside the top 50 until it slowly made its way into the top 40 near the end. This was helped along by two top 15 rankings along with one top 20. It also helped that this did not receive any bottom 5 rankings, either. With the exit of this song, though, means a third studio album has left as well.

“You Go Your Way” is fantastic and easily would’ve been a #1 single if it was released a decade earlier.
I knew it wouldn’t do too well here because it wasn’t a hit at radio but this is still too low. Great melody, music, vocals and the kind of subject that’s right in Alan’s wheelhouse. Loved the hook too.

The next song to exit will also take out our second album of the night.
