This has no bearing on its Hot 100 status of course (obvious statement is obvious, but there was some confusion when TOTC shared this info) so I'm just bumping to ask if it's okay to keep this thread active until it goes recurrent there.

They took their time allowing it back in and it’s like they couldn’t wait to get rid of it. Levitating: the song that made Mediabase look bad.

I mean, this is why Mediabase needs more concrete rules re: recurrency

I was already annoyed this lost three weeks in the top 10 because of Mediabase taking their sweet time to let it rechart, but this is just the cherry on top.
Luckily it won’t affect the Hot 100.

For all its weird quirks, this *will* be Billboard's #1 HOT 100 song of 2021.

Another record for “Levitating”! First song to drop from 4 to out of the charts!

Well there goes this songs chances of being able to top the Mediabase Year-end 2021 Pop Chart, Why couldn't they wait until this Song fell out of the Top 10 before sending it back to Recurrent status?

This makes their chart irrelevant to me then if it’s not given a proper descent like every other song does lol

I believe Mediabase includes recurrent airplay for their YE. You are correct. MediaBase will count all recurrent spins for the YE tabulations and based on my projections, it will likely be the #1 song of the year. Based on my tabulations thus far, Levitating ranks #2 for the year, #11 for the decade and #45 compared to all songs that have charted since 2010 so far. This song proves just how bad recurrent rules are.

MB dragging its feet pulling Levitating back into active status was one thing - they were trying to find the right threshold for carving out a new niche in their rules, and since they let recurrents chart in the top 10 before (usually right AT #10 for a week or two), they were going to be at least semiarbitrary when doing so, even though Levitating's case was obviously much different from other top 10 recurrents by the time it reascended there. They probably should have just set the return threshold at #5 and been done with it, but at least there was A path that could be fairly applied to any future Levitating's.
But there is NO history of sending a song recurrent within the top 10, let alone the top 5. In fact, since songs have been pulled back from recurrency before, this move is even more unprecedented than bringing it back ever was. And there was NO reason to do this - Levitating still hasn't spent even as much time in the top 10 as Blinding Lights did less than a year ago. It isn't plummeting, and it's got some time left in the top 10 unless it starts dropping faster, but it is absolutely on its way out.
This is how you devalue your chart. For the next few months at least, looking at the current chart, the top 10 will simply be wrong. Even the top 5 will be off for a couple of weeks. And even when Levitating drops back out of the top 10 (presumably for good this time), I for one won't be able to switch back to mindlessly accepting the top 10 in the blink of an eye.

No need for people to complain, this song entered the Mediabase top 50 on Oct 4th of last year, which was 9 months ago, it was #1 on Pop for 3 weeks and will probably top the year end Hot 100. 9 months is a long time.

There should be no recurrency at all for any track ranking top 10.
Mediabase really wanted "Butter" pulled into top 10 I guess?

The complaints aren't all about Levitating itself though, but about how this makes the rest of the chart inaccurate. If this happens again, it will be another circumstance where the chart will feel incorrect because there's a song in the top 10 that Mediabase is ignoring. And that's without mentioning the potential inaccuracies caused by songs that don't get allowed to re-enter at all despite being within the top 10 because they don't meet Mediabase's 4 consecutive weeks with a bullet rule. At that point, it's not about the songs themselves, but how incorrectly the chart as a whole is presented.
Mediabase's struggle seems to be that they want to keep their current chart, well, current, but they are unable to recognize that current status can be fluid. They have no problem with songs that linger in the top 10 for one consecutive run for eternity, but their brains broke at the thought of one song having separate top 10 runs. A very ironic instance of something that Billboard handles and adapts to much better.

Exactly! We’ve had Blinding lights and Circles for an eternity, and before that other songs have overstayed their welcome (I believe Shape of you or Sucker). This song had the biggest bullet several weeks before being allowed to reenter. Entering the top 10 with a huge bullet should’ve been enough criterion to reappear, as in Billboard’s. Now this entering recurrence at #4 is stupid. Let this leave when it leaves the top 10 as it has happened with other songs that came back from recurrence. It’s the most accurate thing to do.

Not really the point. If you look at it strictly from a numbers point of view, regardless of what song it represents, it isn’t really a good look. I’d understand if the song even just fell below #5. That would make sense, but as of now, when it was removed I think it would have been at #5? It’s an arbitrary move that doesn’t seem to be based off anything other than that it was previously recurrent and they just wanted to remove it. At least when the song was FINALLY brought back, there was an explanation for why it took so long (even if I disagree with it, it made sense). So far, this doesn’t make sense and that to me is a weakness.

The fact “We’re Good” beat all those songs below it is atrocious. Understand why, but damn. Minus Swan Song, of course. 😋

It had no business being one of her biggest radio hits at that point lol. And it stalled quite quickly. Let's drop a "Be the One" 2021 version now and get it into the top 10 as it should please.

I like Swan Song a lot tbh: her breathy/raspy voice in the verses and then the emotional "SWAN!" in the choruses. Considering it peaked in the Teens on pop radio, it really should have hit the Hot 100.
And IDGAF is an interesting case cuz it peaked low on the Hot 100 relative to its pop airplay, but it managed to chart on the Year End (which most songs that miss the top 45 on the Hot 100 don't manage to do)

What's even more striking is that the #37-peaking "Be the One" managed to chart for 12 weeks, scoring 4 more weeks despite peaking 18 spots lower than "Swan Song." I do like "Swan Song" quite a bit but all that comes to mind when I think about it is this:

I still hear this A LOT. Inescapable Yeah, I hear this a lot on the radio but is nowhere to be seen on Mediabase's top 10 while it still appears on Billboard at #4 www.billboard.com/charts/pop-songsI guess the Levitating case just was too much to handle, Mediabase didn't know what to do.
