"I'm runnin' this shovel way down in a ditch. When you're down in a ditch it's a son of a gun"
I loved the delivery of the hook of this song 😂

"Down In A Ditch" is really fun. Dennis Linde is such a unique songwriter, and Joe really seemed to have fun with his songs. I was glad one of those was included as a non-single, though my favorite Linde cut from Joe has to be "Junior's In Love". Just an absurdly hilarious song.

"Got a boat, got a car, got a house with a yard I'm still workin' the best job I've ever had But I'd give it all away, every dollar that I've made If I could only bring you back
There's a door that I keep closed, there are boxes full of clothes But it's memories, I'm wishin' I could pack I would retrace every step, say the things I should have said If I could only bring you back
But there's no words I can say, not a prayer, I can pray No road that you can take back to my arms But you'll never be gone, our love will live on As long as there's a beat in my heart"#22 ~ "If I Could Only Bring You Back"312 Points Average: 26.00 ST DEV: 9.93 castleoblivion26 ~ 7 tim ~ 17 sabre14 ~ 17 Kanenrá:ke ~ 21 someguy ~ 22 George Strait Junkie ~ 26 .indulgecountry ~ 26 bboat11 ~ 27 LBTrocks ~ 31 kw9461 ~ 33 gardyfan ~ 42 Cody Wants Out... ~ 43

“The Road Not Taken” (#26) - This was one of the harder songs for me to rank as I initially had it a bit closer to my top 20. Given that this was one of Joe’s most underperforming singles up to this point in his career I’d have to say it made it a bit further than I would’ve expected it to. Great song overall, but again at over four minutes in length its a bit long and with no melody requires one to invest in the lyrics. “If You Want Me To” (#25) - This was released on the heels of his successful debut single “Home” and one that I consider to be one of his early forgotten hits. Heck, it wasn’t even included on his Greatest Hits compilation. That said, it fit perfectly into country radio at the time but just isn’t one that has stood the test of time to standout from the rest of his catalog. “This Is Your Brian” (#24) - Everything about this song from the title, the lyrics, and production has always been a bit weird to me. That said, it’s kind of a head-bopping jam and is hard not to wanna like. “Down In a Ditch” (#23) - Speaking of jams this is such a clever and infectious song that fits perfectly into Joe’s wheelhouse…not to mention it came at a time during the two-step line dancing craze of the early/mid 90s in country music. To the best of my knowledge, though, it was never actually released as a single but for those of us that grew up during this time period you’d think otherwise because I do remember it receiving some airplay. “If I Could Only Bring You Back” (#23) - I forgot what a tearjerker this was and I’m surprised that it was barely able to squeak into the top 50 on the country charts because it’s such a great song. While I was really hoping to see this make the top 20 it seemed to be well liked across the board as just about everyone put it in or close to their top 30, albeit except for these two… "I'm Not Through Losing You" (#21) - I'm not too surprised that this ended up being the highest placing album track in the rankdown and based on the reception it received seems like it might've been a better choice as a single over "In My Own Backyard".

I've kept you all waiting long enough! Time to get this going again so we can finish it!
While I get everything going, any predictions for what songs will miss the Top 15?

Of Joe's early hits I'd have to guess that "If The Devil Danced (In Empty Pockets)" is the most vulnerable of leaving before the Top 15. As for the remaining four songs to exit I think that his cover of the Keith Whitley classic "I'm No Stranger to the Rain" is on borrowed time and I'm even a bit surprised it was able to make it this far. "Whole Lotta Gone", "The Quittin' Kind", and "Tougher Than Nails" also stand out as songs that might not make it into the Top 15. While I do expect "So Help Me Girl" to make it in I actually wouldn't be caught off guard if it did happen to exit as well.

I kinda revealed these last 5 fairly quickly. Over the course of the remainder of the week I will be finishing up the reveals for this. Everything is all typed up, all I have to do is copy and paste so it will be done this week! Once this is done I will get the Lee Ann Womack album rankdowns done. I won't start reveals until I have everything typed up in order to guarantee that everything gets revealed close together! Thanks for everyones patience, sorry this has taken me so long.
Any predictions on which 5 songs will miss the top 10?

Wow, color me shocked that "I'm No Stranger To The Rain" was able to do this well! It is a fabulous song, but it is still just a flopped cover of a very well-known hit, and the top 20 is a prime chunk of real estate for an artist of Joe's caliber!!

I predict the following will be (in no particular order) among the 5 songs to exit before the top 10!
"It's Always Something" "In Another World" "So Help Me Girl" "Honky Tonk Attitude" Either "Is It Cold In Here" or "Home"

I can't believe I was able to correctly guess all of the songs that left before the Top 15 as I just kind of had a hunch that those five would be the most likely to leave. "I'm No Stranger to the Rain" made it much further than I expected it to and I think that just goes to show how great of a song that one is overall. That said, it's of those classic songs that I hold in pretty high regard and so while I respect other artists' take on it nothing will ever come close to the original by Keith.
As I had mentioned earlier, "If The Devil Danced (In Empty Pockets)" was likely going to be one Joe's earlier hits to exit as we got to the Top 20 and so it didn't come as much of a surprise to see it leave first. This is one of those songs that is very well suited for Joe and I couldn't even name another artist who might've been able to pull it off. My early childhood years were very much influenced by TNN and CMT so I have some early memories of seeing the video to this song quite a bit on the television.
Disappointed to see "Is It Cold In Here" be the first song out in the Top 15 as it is nothing but pure country gold. I'm glad that I wasn't alone in putting this in my top five and I'm surprised it wasn't able to pick up at least one or two top 10s. This is a song that I hadn't heard in quite some time so I definitely revisited this a handful of times when doing this rankdown. As the saying more or less goes...they don't make country songs like this anymore.

Well the waitress never leaves you with a half-empty glass And every girl's on the dance floor shakin' her... well It's a two step, three step, outta step, country mood They got a Friday night, get right, honky tonk attitude

"In Another World" is just such a weird song for some reason. The overall vibe is just so different from anything else in his catalog. I freaking dig it though!!!
"Is It Cold In Here" and "Honky Tonk Attitude" are both all-time classics that could have easily deserved a spot in the top 10, but frankly just about everything that is left deserves the top 10.

Oop, another classic!!! (And another perfect rank for gardyfan!) "So Help Me Girl" is just a fantastic song, complete with a memorable melody and a wonderful play on words. I'm nailing my predictions though, so shall we make "It's Always Something" our next victim?

I wasn't expecting "So Help Me Girl" to make it to the top ten so I figured it'd be leaving at any moment once we reached the Top 15. I had a bit of a hard time ranking this song myself because it's never been a favorite of mine as it tends to lean more on the contemporary side of country music than it does neo-traditional. It takes about a full two minutes for me before I feel like I'm fully invested in it as it's a bit slow out of the gate, but the last minute and a half is what really makes the song great and come together.
As for what song will miss the top ten I have to agree that "It's Always Somethin'" seems like the most obvious choice, but who knows maybe "Pickup Man" will be just polarizing enough to miss it (although I think that's quite unlikely to happen).
