You got to dance with the one that brought you Stay with the one that want's you The one who's gonna love you when all of the others go home Don't let the green grass fool you Don't let the moon get to you

And in a blowout, "What Made You Say That" takes the crown! Nine of us placed this at #1, while everybody had the song in their Top 5. If you ask me, this is the song on the album that has the most of the Shania-Lange magic we'd later be accustomed to. It's an utter earworm, the production is catchy, the lyrics are cute, the chorus is one that can get stuck in your head forever...ugh! Very much the best song on this album imo! And with that this entire rankdown was finished in a matter of 4 hours

Lol I'm at the lightning speed with which this rankdown was revealed. Not surprised by the winner but for me "Dance with the One That Brought You" is the better single of the two.

"What Made You Say That" is a HUGE bop!! Very obvious but fitting winner. I had never given this album the time of day before, and I must say I am overall super impressed with it! It isn't an A+ album or anything, but it is a very solid debut. I think it is extra easy to overlook when you consider what a cross-genre behemoth Shania ended up being over the course of her career. That later sound was just so natural for her, that it is difficult to associate her with a sound like this debut. I think if she had ended up being a more "normal" artist, this debut wouldn't have a reputation for having aged nearly as badly. Thanks for hosting taylor!!!! I'm super eager to dive into her albums, because unlike most artists, I feel like her albums don't have super obvious winners!

I hate "Crime of the Century", I was not expecting it to do well. I thought the top three would be the singles as those are the only ones I listen to if I'm not playing the whole thing (which is rarely), but it makes sense that the one song Shania wrote herself would be pretty popular. "What Made You Say That" is so much fun and I'm glad it won, despite being the obvious choice. I think it's still in my top 10 most played Shania tracks on last.fm.
I'm looking forward to the future rankdowns which I imagine will be a lot more competitive and potentially surprising.

This was actually my first listen of the entire album - it obviously pales in comparison to her later efforts (at least for me) and I'd probably only think about returning to my top 4 (but then again if I was to listen to Shania why wouldn't I go to "Man! I Feel Like A Woman" or "You're Still the One" instead of something like "Dance with the One That Brought You" right?). Thanks taylor for hosting and looking forward for the other Shania albums (well... not Now, I didn't really like that one)!

“God Ain’t Gonna Getcha For That” gave us such a sweet look into what she would be capable of as a songwriter. I knew it wouldn’t win because “What Made You Say That” has the biggest commercial appeal. That said, this was so fun to see because I had no idea where any of this would land.

tim I've been waiting for your comments on this album so I can move to the next album lol Thanks for the swift kick in the butt lol...I hadn't forgotten I was just procrastinating It's a shame that "There Goes the Neighborhood" couldn't make it into the top 5 because I think it's one of the standout tracks from her debut. Looking back it wasn't too far off from making it in so there's at least some consolation in knowing that. I can see why "You Lay a Whole Lotta Love On Me" may not be everyone's cup of tea but to me it definitely compliments Shania's vocal style...it also sounds like something that would've worked just as well on The Woman In Me album. I'm not sure this was the best song to release as a third single, though, but even still I doubt anything else would've moved the needle much either way. If they had opted for a different single I think "Got Ain't Gonna Getcha for That" would've been a solid choice just based on the reception it received here. This just missed my own top 5 but I certainly think of it as being a standout track that brings some life into the record. And it came as no surprise that the first two singles finished inside the top 2 and I think the right song won. "What Made You Say That" is certainly the one song that I think of when it comes to her debut record. It also brings along with it some nostalgia for me as I remember seeing it quite a bit back in the early days of CMT...it kind of makes me miss those days as a kid just sitting in front of the TV all afternoon watching music videos! Ok, taylor , you can move on now lol! One of my all-time favorite songs from Shania is on the next album so this is a perfect excuse to put it on repeat again!

The Woman in Me (1995)After Shania Twain released her self-titled debut album, she began promoting it by singing at local gigs throughout the United States with not much more than a backing track CD to go by. The album itself did not receive too warm of a reception on the charts; however, it still caught the attention of rock music producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, and they began to have long-distance telephone calls with each other. They quickly bonded over Shania's love of rock music and Mutt's love of American country music, so she arranged a meeting with him at the CMA Music Festival/Fan Fair (now known today as the CMA Fest) in 1993. Shortly after that meeting, they began exchanging song ideas and songwriting together. This swiftly turned from friendship to something more, and they eventually married on December 28, 1993. It was around this time that Shania's record label began getting on her case about coming back into the studio to begin working on her next album, as her debut had been out for nearly a year already. In her 2011 memoir From This Moment On, Shania explained that while she was initially reluctant to do so, she told Luke Lewis that she had co-written some songs with Mutt. Lewis feared she would deviate too much from the standard Nashville sound (it's also notable that Shania lamented later on that she was not given any creative freedom with the songwriting material on her debut, having only co-written one song on it), but agreed to allowing Shania to record some demos anyway. After their wedding, Shania and Mutt continued songwriting and in early 1994, they put together a demo tape produced by Mutt of some of these songs. This tape was played for the first time to record executives at Morin Heights Studio. Some executives were worried of the notable difference between the more country-rock/pop sound of the demo and the typical Nashville sound of her debut; despite this, Luke Lewis let Shania and Mutt continue working together and hired Mutt as the primary producer of what would become the album we're now going to rank. The Woman in Me was released on February 7, 1995 and proved to be not a sophomore slump but a massive sophomore surge, debuting at #1 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart and becoming such a success that it sold 4 million copies by the year's end and was certified Diamond on December 1, 2000, representing 12 million copies in the US and 20 million copies worldwide. In 2006, the album was placed at #8 on CMT's list of the 40 Greatest Albums in Country Music. Tracklist (runtime: 48:08):1. Home Ain't Where His Heart Is (Anymore) 2. Any Man of Mine 3. Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under? 4. If You're Not in It for Love (I'm Outta Here)! 5. The Woman in Me (Needs the Man in You) 6. Is There Life After Love? 7. If It Don't Take Two 8. You Win My Love 9. Raining on Our Love 10. Leaving Is the Only Way Out 11. No One Needs to Know 12. God Bless the Child (single version) Spotify playlist: "God Bless the Child" single version
Due: Wednesday, August 5I think a month is pretty doable for this album. Now that we're into her massive albums I'm hoping a LOT of people will join in on this one and send a list in!

Ugh, I lowkey hate ranking 2 versions of the same song. Can't we just rank whichever one or just all rank the single version? I'm definitely excited to do this album tho!

Well, I thought the album version was essential because it was written about her parents, but I also thought the single version was essential because it differs completely from the album. What do y'all think? Should we scrap the album version and just rank the single version or should we do both?

Well idk to me it just seems like the existence of the longer single version makes it kinda feel pointless to rank the original which is basically just a short little demo-y poem instead of a full 'song.' I can also guarantee the original one is gonna be dead last anyway for these reasons.

I'm mixed as the first is only a minute and a half and is gorgeous on it's own. The results will prob have them go close together anyway :) Excited to go back to The Woman In Me! This was the first CD I ever bought with my first boom box! The memories of being a kid and singing these songs in the mirror.

The shorter version is on the actual album so that one is probably the one most people gravitate towards but I don't know the general consensus.

The single mix builds on the a cappella track on the album. Clearly, the lyrics and arrangement were expanded for radio play but its structure remains intact. In many other RDs, songs are ranked based on the user's personal preference (album or single version or any remix) and that version need not be specified.
Even if ranked separately, it's likely that each participant would rank the two versions similarly. Just my humble opinion. :)

Alrighty y'all, it seems there's a general consensus that ranking both versions of "God Bless the Child" would be redundant. Therefore, we're gonna just go ahead and rank the single version. If that alters the lists of those who have already sent, you can change your rankings if you wish! :)

When is shania gonna release something new Considering she released her first new album in over 15 years a little under 3 years ago, it's really hard to predict when or if she might ever release a new album.

Submitted! This is one of my favourite albums ever, and has so many great memories for me. I remember getting it right when it came out, when Shania was still relatively unknown, because I loved "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under". It was one of the first albums I ever owned. It was so cool watching this unknown local artist become such a big international superstar over the course of the album.
Listening to it again today, it's crazy how 9 of the 12 songs went on to become hit singles (we got "If It Don't Take Two" as the ninth single here; she did the same thing with releasing "When" as the twelfth single off of Come On Over here as well). I miss the days when an album would have a lifespan like that.

Alrighty, y'all! I figure I better start on reminders already as we are now 4 calendar weeks away from the August 5 deadline as of yesterday. I'm excited about the turnout so far--I already have 9 lists including mine! That's like, 95% of her debut's participation, as to be expected... Please keep bringing your lists in! I want these albums to have as much participation (and thus, competition) as possible! If any of you pop girlies are interested, feel free to send a list! God Bless the Rank:1. Kanenrá:ke 2. codyj100 3. tim 4. austin 5. mamooshka 6. taylor 7. ClevelandRox 8. bboat11 9. someguy
