2004-2006 Hidden-Gem Country Rankdown: Revealing!

The 2012 rankdown will be done sometime this year, but this is an idea I've been pondering a while and decided to act on it.

There were a lot of songs left off the 2004-2006 rankdowns, so I decided to combine all three years into a "Hidden-Gem" rankdown.

There's 114 songs. It's a lot but not as much as 125 (lol). I tried to include as many as I could, but know that some had to be left off for room sake. I'm also expecting a lot of these to be new discoveries, so you will get three months to submit a list.

There’s several really good gems on here. Tracy Lawrence’s If I Don’t Make It Back, I remember that song when it first came out thinking this song is gonna be a hit. Sadly I was wrong but that song hit me in the feels when I first heard it. Blake’s When Somebody Knows You That Well is another good one on the list. I’m getting intrigued at doing rankdowns again after seeing some of these lists. Glad I have until July 21 to think it over.

Well, since there’s no Kenny to be had I’m pretty sure I can foresee one song in particular that’ll be tanked lol. This is an intriguing rankdown for sure and I’m glad to see such songs as “Not Ready to Make Nice” by the Dixie Chicks included as that is one of the more glaring omissions from 2006. Oh, and hello “Texas”!

I'm being only slightly hyperbolic when I say this may be the strongest rankdown list since the 1994 rankdown. So, so many gems in here. 114 songs might seem like a lot, but this era was so strong with low-peaking/non-charting songs that he easily could've tacked another 20-30 songs on here. Really looking forward to this one.

Just want to add the same comment towards Rebecca Lynn Howard's "No One'll Ever Love Me" because that song is incredible (and is definitely in the running to be my #1!

So many great songs though so we'll see but that song is incredible!

If Bobby Pinson's name is attached to a song then it usually explains why it's so good. He had a gem of a single himself with "Don't Ask Me How I Know".

If it helps any, I'm sorting through over 140 songs a piece for both 1991 and 1995. The good news is I'll place a cap of 120 on both for various reasons.

Tracy Lawrence’s If I Don’t Make It Back, I remember that song when it first came out thinking this song is gonna be a hit. Sadly I was wrong but that song hit me in the feels when I first heard it. 

Quick story on the song's chart run. Tracy said in an interview that he thought it was going to be a big hit, maybe his last big hit...but it never took off. "Used to the Pain" got a little more station support, which is a great song too, but God, "If I Don't Make It Back" should have been huge. To this day Tracy will tell you that's one of his favorite songs he's ever recorded. 

I wish that had been his last #1, instead of "Find Out Who Your Friends Are," which is a good song but pales in comparison. I can easily see someone like Luke Combs singing that song and spending multiple weeks at #1 with it.

As I read through the list a second time I spot more gems. Reba’s “You’re Gonna Be“, Rio Grand “Kill Me Now”, Jeff Bates “No Shame”, and Rockie Lynne “Do We Still”.

One of my favorite releases from 2006 was actually the Emmylou Harris and Mark Knopfler collaborative album All The Roadrunning and I’d love for more of the rankdowns to reflect more than just the mainstream/contemporary releases and not forget the impact of the Americana or in this case Country Rock releases. There were only a couple of singles released from the album with the first being “This Is Us’”, but “If This Is Goodbye” was without a doubt one of the best songs from the album.

Either way sabre14 did a great job of compiling this list of which I’m already halfway done with so no more songs lol. I’m really looking forward to the rankdown, though, and am expecting it to be quite polarizing!
