Here I Go Again -
WhitesnakeMy
#1 goes top 20.
I'm not complaining. This was easily gonna be my #1, but I did wrestle with the idea that "Still of The Night." would end up higher. Still that doesn't matter cause I have to be true to myself. This was a monster rock hit, and one of my favorites of the year. My actual favorite song of 1987 was not even hair metal it was the freestyle classic from
Noel "Silent Morning", but
"Here I Go Again" was my favorite rock song of the year , and how could it not be? It had a ll the makings of what would eventually become my favorite music genre from 1988 til today. ...and yes the iconic
Tawny Kitaen music video has 100% to do with it being my #1 too. It was the best music video of the year.
19.
Midnight Blue -
Lou Gramm This is a great song, but noway am I gonna put this one higher when we haven't even ranked the real
Foreigner classics like
"Hot Blooded" "Head Games" Double Vision". I'm saving my top rankes for those songs.
18.
Bullet the Blue Sky -
U2I only have two of the four U2 songs in my top 40. This one and you know the other one. I already gave my review on this one. We didn't get to rank it on Alt, but I would have put it even higher there. This song gets my high rank mainly for that bass. It has a really cool vibe, and could have been a bass solo breakdown for a 70's Led Zeppelin song.
17.
Seven Wonders -
Fleetwood MacThis was the one to squeeze into my top 40.
Stevie Nicks was the best vocalist of this band. I'm also glad
Heart beat this one out tho.
16.
Stay the Night -
Benjamin OrrThat's some song to put at
#1. I'm not complaining tho. This is a great placement for the song too. It's Benjamin Orr's best solo effort ever, and a hell of an 80's vibe to go.
Elliot Easton does guitars on this track, but of course the real star is Benjamin's vocal beauty. Also point out that it reached
#24 on
Hot 100.
15.
Animal -
Def LeppardThere will always be those non believers who do not want a
Def Leppard song to go top 10 on one of these RDs, but if
"Photograph" doesn't make the top 10 in 1983 then these things are rigged.
So Def Leppard in my top 5. No surprises there. I mean it's Def Leppard.
14.
Strap Me In -
The CarsI am pleasantly surprised this song made the top 50. I'm always here for Cars support and especially for Ric, but some of those high ranks are very pleasing to my eyes. This is a very good sign for the upcoming monster songs from
Heartbeat City. 13.
Alone -
Heartfemale Glam Metal ballad in my top 20 is no surprise, but we haven't even gotten to the real Heart fire yet. Another great sign for Heart fans.
12.
You Are the Girl -
The CarsI wonder if it would have made the top 10 if I gave #1 again? but it doesn't matter because its not my favorite rock song of 1987 anyway. I better see
'Heartbeat City" songs in the top 10 for the 1984 mainstream rock RD.
11.
Still of the Night -
WhitesnakeTroy wanted to make sure the top 10 was Modern Rock fueled, but damn that is one unessssssssssssessary (idk how to spell this stupid word anyway)
#100. Part of me wishes we wold have had some
Cinderella in here so he would have something easy to tank instead.
The rest of the ranks look pretty genuine for this iconic rock jam. it's Whitesnake at their most Zeppelin, and we did get it up to
#11.
Oh well looks like we got another Modern Rock fueled top 10...again, but at least I have one top 10 song remaining.10.
(I Just) Died in Your Arms -
Cutting CrewI was always gonna give a high rank to this song. I don't know how great it is for rock format, but it is a sophistipop classic from all angles.
9.
Where the Streets Have No Name -
U2 Few songs from U2 that I just don't like, and this is one of them. Just like that Batman soundtrack song and a few others. I didn't do much with it on the Pop RD either. I always felt that intro just goes on a tad too long. The song itself doesn't have a lot of melodic up and downs and certainly doesn't have the iconic vibe o
f "With Or Without You". Even the
Pet Shop Boys cover didn't blow me away, so what does that tell you? The best thing here is
Rick Dees on the airwaves.
8.
Heartbreak Beat -
The Psychedelic FursI can see a lot of you upgraded this on from your Alt a lot higher in this Mainstream rock RD. Hmmmm.., but not surprising. I brought it down just a tad, but still kept in my top 15. It is one of my top 3 favs from the band.
7.
Learning to Fly -
Pink Floydwhoopie.... In retrospect the other Pink Floyd song rocks harder than this, but I knew this one, and it isn't awful enough for bottom 10, but I still really don't care too much for it. I actually thought it sounded better among the Modern Rock list. I seriously better not see anyone downplay
"Another Brick In The Wall" when it rolls around. You will have my support 100% for that one, and
"Run Like Hell" too if it makes the YE end list?
6.
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For -
U2This one is good. It barely misses my top 50, but i really like the melody of this one. Too bad it's not on the next Modern Rock RD for '86. I would have done it a solid top 30 on that list. This means the correct U2 song prevails. I just hope it beats out
R.E.M.?
5.
Big Time -
Peter GabrielThis one is alright. I don't think it fits this format very much, and why does this song cruises over and not some from
The Cult who I feel are more Rock n roll fueled? I know because it charted high on Modern Rock. Big deal. The cruise overs should be songs that better fit the format regardless of charts.
4.
With or Without You -
U2look at all those top 10's. I hope
"New Years Day" and "I Will Follow" perform this well? maybe even
"Sunday Bloody Sunday" that got a lot of album Rock airplay.
3.
Crazy -
IcehouseWeird how this song comes in this high. Its a great song and all that, but just looks odd among the monster names on this list.
I hope
Aimee mann has enough modern Rock fuel to beat out
"The One I Love"?
2.
The One I Love -
R.E.M.good song, but it had its day on Modern Rock. Now step aside and let some mainstream Rock icons take their rightful place on this Rd.
1.
Time Stand Still -
Rush ft. Aimee MannYes yes yes! I for one am super glad that an Album Rock icon like
Rush prevails in a Mainstream Rock RD. I didn't even put this in my top 10, because there are tons of Rush songs that I'm saving those slots for. I haven't actually given this one much play through the years so it was a great rediscovery on this list of songs. There is a lot of
"Sub-Divisions" magic and a great guitar hook you could find in 'a
Moving Pictures' track.
Aimee Mann really stands out here and you know I'm a sucker for some female vocals in rock, so yeah I believe one of the better songs to win this Rd took the crown.
singingrulebritannia amazing job taking on the one of the biggest years in rock. Once again there were way too many extras to cover, but I was able to cover some of my favs and maybe not so favs. I think we should all report Magic Mike and get him banned form youtube for that
Bon Jovi injustice, but I did get to view all of my favorite videos from 1987. Great songs ,and great memories.
