even though it isn't my favorite song left, it's cool to see "White Horse" in this top 10, for being such an oddball song with historical significance

i would play ABC's "How To Be A Millionaire" on repeat for hours back in 1986 - i literally could not get enough!
as far as the top 10 goes...my #2 is conspicious in its absence, but otherwise, i have the rest of my Top 8 rankings here - most of these I expected to do well

Good top 10. I'm rooting for the song that not only made the top 40 once, but twice...

30. Turn Up The Radio (44): This was a first listen that had potential. The music and the chants are good, but the vocals and the melody -especially in the chorus-didn't really convince me. Definitely needed more strength. The more I listened to this vs other songs, the lower it got in my ranking 29. Don't Answer Me (18): I've always been a fan of this type of melodic, nostalgic, lushly produced music from TAPP, ELO and the like. Great melody, harmonies, and music. 28. Can't Shake Loose (34): This was a flop back home -unlike Frida's hit. I like the different rocker vibe, which made this almost like a rocker Phyiscal and of course her always strong vocals. The melody wasn't that strong to me, though. Needed some more bite. 27. No Easy Way Out (10): Come on, now!!! That intro is an 80s classic gem. It was used in many commercials back home, and as intro to TV shows or segments. It has an epic feel that still sounds good to me. And the guy sings well, too. 26. When the Lights Go Out (40): I like their synth pop, and I love a handful of their songs. I hadn't heard this one before this RD, though, so my lack of familiarity affected my ranking a bit... still, this could never be in my top 5 Naked Eyes songs, and I can't see it being in my top 30 of this RD --even though I do like it now a bit more than when I sent my list. 25. The Belle of St. Mark (48): YAS! Finally one of my remaining bottom 5s leaving! I LOVED Glamorous Life and I liked A Love Bizarre, but I didn't get this at all. I mean, I hated whatever that main keyboard sound was, and that melody wasn't catchy to me. Sorry, but a clear bottom 5 to me. 24. Money Changes Everything (5): :(( This is a strong rocker. The music, her vocal attitude (those sustained rocker notes, for example), the melody, especially the sing-along part in the last minute or so, were great. This was her 5th top 5 in a row in my personal chart, albeit the first one not to reach the top position. It was another hit for her back home, too, and it brings a lot of good childhood memories. That video is bananas, too!! LOVED her energy!! 23. Vienna Calling (27): A personal top 15 that I still like. Catchy, well produced synth pop. His signature talk singing got a bit cheesy, though. 22. 19 (23): A personal top 10 back then. It still sounds unique with lush but fun production, that contrasts with the seriousness of the topic raised. Cool song. 21. I Wonder If I Take You Home (28): A nice re-discovery! I heard this back when Don't Phunk With My Heart was released, but then I forgot about it. This is a cool song, with great music and vocals. This zone was just very tight and the difference among the songs in my 20s was quite narrow.

#20. If She Knew What She Wants - The BanglesAgain I ranked this song same as my chart peak. Nice song.b u goes a little overboard on the sugar lined melody. too bad the song isn't as hot as Susana was. #19. Rain on the Scarecrow - John MellencampDecent song. I generally do not dig too much on the Alternative Rock John Mellencamp vibe. Kinda sounded like a R.E.M song more than his usual heartland rock song. #18. Why Can't I Have You - The CarsI guess this song needed more support from their biggest fan. I was always a fan of it, because it had a sort of mysterious ,and mesmerizing melody to it. I think the best aspect was Ric's vocals. The Cars were not really a ballad s band, but the ones they released were keepers . #17. Nightbird - Stevie NicksDidn't really recall this one. It was pretty good. Stevie sounds good, but the song kinda drags on in the verses and the chorus didn't do anything for me musically. #16. This Is Not America - David Bowie and Pat Metheny GroupOne of my least favorite Bowie songs out there. He sounds great and all that, but Sophistipop was not his sound. I'm guessing that pat metheny Group vibe was what killed it for me? #15. Holding Out for a Hero - Bonnie TylerLove the percussion and speed of the song. I was just never a fan of Bonnie Tylers vocals. It's still a good song to visit now and then. #14. Turn to You - The Go-Go'sThey completely lost that beachnik beat they had in the early 80's. This sounds more like them trying to sound like t he Bangles. I like the upbeat vibe of the song, but the chorus could have used a little more imagination. #13. Mountains - Prince and the RevolutionThis is Prince and all that, but this isn't one of my favorites. I like the melody during the verses. It even has a little "Shake You Body To The Ground" in the pianos. I just wish that chorus wasn't so drab. #12. Gold - Spandau Ballet This is the true 80's New Romantic Sophistipop fire. A perfect melody to showcase Tony Hadley's vocals. The percussion has that kinda exotic sound , but at the same time with a little edge to fit right into the Modern Rock sound of KROQ. This song should have been top 10. #11. So Far Away - Dire Straits This is so far away from the awesomeness of "Money For Nothing". I only like a few songs from this band. This isn't one of them. I even got into the fun sound of "Walk Of Life", but this one needed a Dire dose of gasoline for me to even tap one foot to. EXTRAS:Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves - Eurythmics and Aretha FranklinThis one was pretty good. Eurythmics has really changed their sound by 1985. They had more of a guitar driven bluesy sound than the New Wave sound they commenced with, but the songs were still melodically catchy. I was not into music cameos back then either, but I think Aretha added a nice dose of Soul to the song. (How to Be A) Millionaire - ABCThis is one of my favorite ABC songs ever. It definitely had more of a straight out Top 40 pop to sound to it as opposed to the Sophistipop sound they were known for. Even added some Miami Freestyle elements, but I think that is what drove me to it. I remember listening to TKA 'One Way Love" in '84 and thinking this ABC song sounded a lot like that one in the beats and percussion. This is also probably ABC's most aggressive sounding sound. To get a better feel of what I mean about it having a Freestyle vibe to it. Listen to the ABC - How To Be A Zillionaire (Wall Street Mix). You could mix this with Sa-Fire's "Don't Break My Heart" and most of TKA's discography. Do It for Love - Sheena Eastonit's a crime I didn't recall this one, because it sounded great. I was always a quick flip for Sheena's sexy vocals. Her songs had a lot of sex appeal. Man I was a horny little kid. Download /Check for archives.

Stats to consider for #10:
We begin today's reveals with a song that hanged on to a spot in the top 10 after nearly getting knocked out right at the very end. Somebody loses their #1 here and another top 5 goes down as well.

shocked! (but not disappointed) that “Mothers Talk” made it this far
the rest of the Top 5 are all expected, but Sade should’ve been at least one notch higher

SAVE A PRAYER vs. WHITE WEDDING Which song will be victorious? Will it Be Duran Duran or Billy Idol that takes the title? These are the only 2 songs to have spent time in first place. Both had low standard deviations with one of them having the lowest SD and the other the 6th lowest SD. Both songs received 9 top 10 rankings and each had multiple #1s. Cody Wants Out... , singingrulebritannia , Doc Indie Party Rock , and peacebone all still have their #1 in the game along with myself. Who among us will get to see our favorite come out on top? Find out in a few minutes...

That concludes the second edition of the Lost Hits of the Mid 80s rankdown! Thank you once again to all participants! And special thanks to those who shared their commentary on the songs. Even though I personally had been rooting for "Save a Prayer", there is no denying that "White Wedding" is a deserving champion. There is still one last Lost Hits rankdown to go! I am currently working on finalizing the song list for the Late 80s rankdown and hopefully I will get that done soon so we can finish up this rankdown series. {FINAL STATS}

Lots of suspenseful moments, rowellfarm490 - thanks for hosting. Looking forward to the lost hits of the late 80s. In the interim, these mid-decade gems that will be discoveries for most: Gowan's breakthrough epic had a distinct Steinman vibe and made the Canadian Top 10 in 1985. While international success eluded him, he later became lead vocalist for veteran rockers, Styx, a role which he continues to this day. Luba's sultry pipes helped her earn the Juno (Canadian) Female Vocalist of the Year three times in the 80s. Her signature hit was featured in the soundtrack to 9-1/2 Weeks. Montréal's Gino Vannelli had two US Top 10 hits under his belt by the early 80s. He shed his AC image for a 1985 project. Black Cars made the Top 5 in Canada, but sadly, it would just miss the Billboard Top 40.

I kind of figured that I'd miss this, and that's a shame, though I doubt I would have changed too much at the top.
My top five would have been some combination of the actual top five, maybe with "White Horse" in there somewhere. I don't know what I would have made my #1, but I suspect it would have been "Mothers Milk", though "White Wedding" probably would have been my #2 or #3. It's undeniable.
