Let me put this straight. Exile will be much bigger than The 1 worldwide. The 1 will be a bigger hit in the US since it's much more CHR friendly. Exile can only be released in winter. She can't expect this to do even moderately well if she puts it out after December. The 1 can do well even now, and it will do well in spring/ summer too. If she wants more than one song carrying the album, she needs to push Exile now and The 1 after Exile is done. What I'm worried about is that she's waiting for elections to be done before doing anything.

^ I don't think either of them will be big enough to "carry the album" lol not even "cardigan" could. the album is bigger than any single could be. focusing on the US is important for the Grammys/Award Season. "exile" could be a good option because of Bon Iver, and since it's submitted for a nomination, but they need to figure out a way to edit the song and promote it, otherwise it might not even crack Top 50 on all-format radio airplay. "cardigan" barely reached No. 30 there. "the 1" is a safer bet for radio but won't have the same Grammy appeal. "august" is a wildcard I'd love to see happen. "dynasty" too.

The 1 is the next single. By carrying the album, I wasn't implying something along the lines of Say So and Hot Pink. What I meant to say was that it might help the album earn a few extra streams. Taylor earns so much of her consumption from album cuts that unless she has a huge hit on her hands the presence or absence singles will hardly affect her.

Edit: I take that back. just went to the website and read the original in German and sounds like it is an official announcement.

Not here for “the 1” being released over “Exile”. What a missed opportunity.

Agreed. What a huge missed opportunity, but what else is new. Honestly, I’m just glad we have this album. It makes the singles seem almost irrelevant.

Knowing how they have mismanaged the singles for the last three albums, some part of me absolutely thought to myself early on...watch them push "betty" to pop too or release something like "illicit affairs" out of nowhere for no reason, just to stick to theme. lol

dammn reputation did not come to play... although for End Game, 8 come from Future (overdose, stoked, dope, whippin', boat, G5, persona, protect) and 8 come from Ed (reconnected, sprung, chips, traits, paranoia, insecurities, deny, tip), effectively cutting Taylor's unique words down to 9.
(I looked at this because I can't accept "End Game" as Taylor's most creative song lol.)

She would typically have a second verse and bridge to boost her unique word count.

“The 1” is a good move because she needs something to be able to push the album during the holiday season.
“Exile” is perfect Grammy bait to release the first week in January. It’ll have 3-4 weeks of buildup until the Grammys at the end of January and billed as a “must-see live duet”. If it were pushed now, the song would be stale and perhaps non-existent on radio by the time the Grammys rolled around.

if it was released as a single, "exile" would be played just as much as it is right now by pop radio

Exile is one of her top 5 best songs. Which is saying something. It’s the best song on Folklore and I can’t believe it’s not being released during the winter season. Where it would absolutely smash.

I really hope they use BBMA as a re-launching platform to gain back some momentum. New video, live performance, and a tv special announcement should all be ready to release ASAP to breathe new life into this project for the holiday season. The promo has felt lazy so far, and albeit fans buying bundles and keeping it at #1 for seven weeks, the label/management really hasn’t been craft with their promo. They were literally handed gold and I haven’t seen the push that it warrants and deserves at this point. The fact that they let cardigan just flounder for weeks is just one example.
I have faith they have something up their sleeve but I will be livid if they don’t.

The album is out of the top ten this week, making it her shortest stay in the top ten ever. I don't think she'll do a TV special. Any rumours I heard of that were shot down, so let's just hope she releases an MV next week. Frankly starting to get annoyed at her inactivity.

i know she's going for more lowkey campaign for grammys this year but damn some good playlisting would do the trick. she cant rely on sales alone to keep the album up.

Her single choices have been completely asinine since reputation. so nothing she or her label ever choose is surprising to me.
'exile' is one of her best ever so I'm hoping it sees a release. LGAD would have been chosen over T1 for me but here we are.

I wonder if personal issues are keeping her from doing any promotion or engagement with the album and pthe public on like twitter and tumblr etc. I don't think its like her at all with such a well recieved and instantly beloved by pretty much everyone album, to just sit back and watch all the enthusiasm and momentum fade away. In the past it seems like it was always personal romantic issues or public dislike and outcry that would cause her withdraw and hide. But maybe she is just afraid this time time of oversaturation. The problem with ot tho, is a huge part of her ability to draw and keep her fans knterest, aside from the music, was engaging with fans and making them feel they were an almost everyday part of her life, either from random physical sitings to random posts on social media to personal vlogs etc.
Anyway I hope they do something this week

Her single choices have been completely asinine since reputation. so nothing she or her label ever choose is surprising to me. 'exile' is one of her best ever so I'm hoping it sees a release. LGAD would have been chosen over T1 for me but here we are. Exile would plain and simple not work at pop radio. It's too slow and too long, and any radio edit will ruin the song. For a song like that to work there needs to be a hook, like an event that piques the public's interest. The best thing she can do is perform Exile at the Grammy's, where the audience will be a massive 15M+. If she wins a lot of awards at the ceremony, and then proceeds to deliver an outstanding performance, enough momentum could be generated for Exile to do well, and I think Taylor knows that. TLGAD is easily my favourite track on the album, and I would love for it to be a single, but The 1's lyrics are much more relatable than TLGAD's, which follows an intricate storyline that people who don't have prior insight on wouldn't appreciate. The 1 is one of the most upbeat songs on Folklore, is very catchy, and it's also laid-back and well-suited to fall. It has a mature feel to it, and will do well at pop, HAC, AC and maybe even rhythmic radio. It's the best performing album track at Apple Music and Amazon (Taylor's biggest streaming platforms), and the difference between it and Exile at Spotify is decreasing daily. It's a great single choice; all it needs is a good push from Taylor's side.

I just don’t think this album was made with the intent of it being a hit maker so the idea she’s just sitting back and doing nothing about it is odd to me. She could be doing tv show appearances or whatever it available right now but what even is available that would make a difference? I think the album itself is a statement and probably even offers a bit of a break for her and her scheduling.
And I also don’t think Exile is the smash people think. It’s one of my favourites on the album too and something I’ll probably be listening to for years to come but I don’t see it as something pop radio would latch onto - unless it were latched onto a critical moment in a tv show or movie or something, thus giving it a life of its own beyond simply a Taylor Swift track. Maybe she should look into licensing songs from the album to streaming series.

To be clear I don’t think ‘exile’ should be sent to pop but it should see a HAC/AC/AAA (maybe...) release with a video treatment.
