@killamonjaro - Here's an excerpt from one of my favorite essays explaining this: Women can be sexist to men, i.e. they can discriminate against men based on sexist prejudices. However, they have far less power in most of the world and cannot oppress men in the same way at all. Men also can be sexist to men, and they are (still not anywhere near as common as men being sexist to women)

my post was a jab at the fact that the industry is sexist (and their ageism is harsher toward women)... but turns out, so are you! It's sexist to point out that most posters on Pulse are more impressed by female statistics than male ones? okay dokey. On the other hand, I could make a case that most of the posters on Pulse are sexist against MEN rather easily as well. lol

This is Pulse, don't you know it's more impressive when a woman does it. Misogyny is rampant in the music industry; we know this. The GP likes their ladies young and beautiful, and many a pop star suddenly starts dwindling when she turns 30. Female pop stars in the industry are just like players on FIFA Career Mode. When they both hit 30 years old, they become useless and their value decreases by a lot.

Hiveminds rule the roost there. They only positive Reddit has is that you can find some pretty niche subreddits the GP hasn't gotten to yet that still have that nice early Internet, small knit community feel. But something like /r/funny, /r/politics, or /r/AskReddit? You better be prepared for a stream of hateful replies and PMs if you say something out of line. In turn, Reddit also has heinous subreddits that promote toxic ideologies like /r/The_Donald, /r/MensRights, /r/TheRedPill, /r/FemaleDatingStrategy, etc. Hell, Reddit's own Pulse equivalent, /r/popheads has turned into nothing but an extension of stan Twitter.

Yeah Reddit is awful, and I say that as a user. Some subreddits are completely vile. Luckily as a forum type site, you can avoid most of the vile ones quite easily.

Just because they were taken down doesn't mean the site doesn't have problems. They existed in the first place and become big enough to cause problems, no? So that doesn't negate my point. Especially when the others and several more I never even listed, still exist. I also wasn't talking about Pulse, so I have no idea why you brought that up. I agree, Pulse has issues too, but so does every social media site. I wasn't arguing against that statement. I was simply debating your stance on "every social media site is bad except Reddit," which just isn't true.

Cardigan debuting at #1 on the HOT ROCK / ALTERNATIVE SONGS chart is a little jarring. I guess the chart really IS revamped!ON THE OTHER HAND Starboy deserved to be on the decade end π

It's sexist to point out that most posters on Pulse are more impressed by female statistics than male ones? okay dokey. On the other hand, I could make a case that most of the posters on Pulse are sexist against MEN rather easily as well. Focusing on rarer achievements is not the same thing as sexism For example, between Raise Your Glass and Cardigan there were numerous solo #1's by solo men in their 30's and even 40's. The implication being that it's a lot harder to get #1 as a woman in your 30's. So it's not sexist against men to pay more attention to solo #1's by women in their 30's when they're so much harder to achieve. Beyond that, the vast majority of hate posts on Pulse are directed towards women beyond a couple specific songs such as Someone You Loved
Well, I agree with everything in your post except that last point. There is a ton of hate, whether "deserved" or not, thrown at successful male artists on Pulse, whether it's Capaldi (not just Someone You Loved, but all of his songs and his voice in general), Maroon 5, Ed Sheeran (Especially Perfect and its chart longevity), Drake (by some people), Chris Brown, R. Kelly, 6ix9nine, XXXtentacion, Justin Timberlake... I'm not saying that female artists don't get their fair share of hate by some posters, but it's innaccurate to say it makes up the vast majority beyond "a couple specific songs by male artists."

Speaking on the sexism topic, it's not sexist to recognize women's achivements anymore than it's discriminatory to straight people to recognize achievements of LGBTQ people, because of the roadblock a lot of women can face. Granted, when they're both young, men and women are roughly more equal in terms of achievement, shelf life of a man's career lasts generally longer than a woman's. Though eventually, both genders have the issue of older age impacting their success, it happens for women far sooner.
I think it's partly because a lot of women are marketed on their looks and sex appeal in a way men aren't. Some men can actually face the same issue if they don't age well (and use those things for their success), but it happens to men far less than women, and often at older ages for men.
The point is, women are more impacted, and therefore, usually their achivements are seen as more relevant.

Can we like not keep doing this? Nobody actually wants to be talking about gender politics or whatever. At the very least can it be kept to DM's.
We should talk about how great it is that such a beautiful song as August got to 23 on the hot 100. Would never have though that Taylor week would actually turn out to be more of a disaster than Trollz week here :(

I think most of us agree that men can face sex or gender based discrimination but it is far less frequent, to the point where it is negligible in the grand scheme of how sexism plays out in real life. And Pulse celebrates women's achievements because it is objectively harder for women to succeed in the music industry (or most other industries, for that matter).

Compared to previous threads, the discussion on sexism has been much more interesting and less obnoxious compared to other debates (I still have flashbacks to when the threads went on a tangent defining who is or isn't a one-hit wonder)

Ya'll really trying it in here, women always have it harder than men in most careers and occupations Let us celebrate the victories of female artists who the industry especially mistreats once they reach a certain age
The misogyny popped the fuck out of some of ya'll, push it back inside please, thanks.

Only one entry by Logic? :o
Regarding that women over 30s discussion; I see Taylor (30), Rihanna (32), Adele (32) and Gaga (34) with chances of getting additional #1's solo. With Rihanna, it's all about how she'll release her music - will her singles be solo or duets.
Gaga has had two duet singles at #1 since she turned 30, but her biggest solo hits have reached #4 and #5. She's the most unlikely case of the "big 4" I'd say.
That is still very different prospect than in the early 00s, when Madonna (41), Janet (34), Mariah and Gwen Stefani (both 35) reached #1

It takes awhile for them to set-up the system for the new rules in place. You can't do big changes on the spot without warning or without preparing the current system, the charts would've been a mess if they did it right away.Β Never has a chart rule change taken that much time. What happened is that BB had insider info on folkloreβs release date before the rule change, and they allowed it to happen. And even if they did know in advance, there isn't a damn thing you can do about it. Get over it.
