I wonder if Taylor will perform this at the ACMs as just a straight acoustical performance, or will she have any kind of theatricals in it? If she does, one thing I could see her doing is maybe if she did have a male cowriter under the pseudonym "William Bowery", like Harry Styles or someone(which i dont believe its him) maybe he could come out during the key change in the last chorus and sing with her. Or if it's her that is using the William Bowery nickname as the writer of the male point of view...maybe some kind of quick costume change at that same point to reveal it. But mostly i hope she just does a simlle, effective, strong acoustic performance with no frills. And with a harmonica. Etc

What a lovely performance by Ms. Swift. "Betty" is an interesting and well-written record. It would be brilliant if it went all the way to No.1 on Country radio.

I love that she did not drop the harmonica. The performance is very stunning. Tho I'm not sure if it was me but I think there was an incorrect chord played during the last chorus (when she changed the key) - nonetheless, it's a stellar performance!

To "recover" her first audience, wouldn't it be wise to make a duet with Maren Morris during a live performance for the CMA awards for example ? Even if by November, it would be wise to fully exploit "Exile".

I feel like this is her testing the waters to return to country next album. I couldn't help thinking during the performance last night that some of the lyrics sound like she's talking directly to the country audience / industry, as far as asking if they would still have her, that her pop direction was "just a summer thing," "all I know is I miss you." lol When thinking about it in that hypothetical context, folklore would feel like a nice transition back to country. Red was the closest to an "indie" album before folklore, and that was her transition album before going full pop.

I've been waiting and hoping for the day she makes another country album, or at least another hybrid album like Red that plays both sides of the aisle. She's just too good at country music to stay away forever, so it's nice to see her continuing to dabble in it with the occasional single release ("New Year's Day," "Betty"), collabs ("Babe"), and songwriting credits ("Better Man"). I knew she'd never stray completely from the genre, but it's definitely nice to have her occasionally dipping her toe back in.

I still don't see how New Year's Day could be seen as country in the slightest but what do I know?

I still don't see how New Year's Day could be seen as country in the slightest but what do I know? I agree with you. I felt the same about "Rainbow" by Kacey Musgraves. Selena Gomez could sing either song and no one would deem it country.

I suppose indulge meant that New Year's Day was sent to country radio. So despite being an acoustic pop song, it kinda fit the country music scene at the time, which was and still is very poppy.

"New Year's Day" has the guitar in spots, which gives it a kinship to some of her slower, earlier country-pop tracks. But, yeah, "betty" is way more country-sounding.
The rolling weekly bullet for "betty" has seen a nice increase, currently at +193 and sitting at No. 36 on Mediabase's published-panel chart.

It theorized that the entire folklore Love Triangle (cardigan, august, and betty) had to do with this. James being Taylor, Betty being the country music industry, and the girl from august being the pop music industry. Honestly, knowing Taylor, it holds merit, and you bring up a good point about Red. If this was really a testing-the-waters moment, I am ECSTATIC for TS9. I've missed her on the country side so, so much.

^Likewise. As much as I may enjoy a "Blank Space" or "Style," my heart is always with a song like "betty."

That’s crazy because august is arguably the most pop song on the album, Betty is the most country sounding song on the album, and cardigan (the song about James aka Taylor) is very singer songwriter and has lyrical elements of country and musical elements of pop in the song. This is a genius theory.

^Has anyone presented this theory to her? :)
On Billboard's Country Airplay chart, "betty" inches up a spot to No. 34*.

Eight monitored-reports adds this week, per Mediabase.
Expanding on the Country Airplay chart- while it climbed a spot to 34, it was not bulleted, as it lost 0.156m audience, for a total of 2.907m. In terms of spins, it had 1,129 for the week, ranking No. 33.

I was wondering why there's an even bigger difference between the numbers on the Spincrease list (which is all stations), and what shows on the 7-day rolling chart (published panel)- All Access is currently showing the Sept. 13-19 period, rather than Sept. 20-26. So, the rolling trends are outdated. :|
On the Spincrease list, "betty" +210 (25th biggest gainer).

Anyone know why there's an even bigger difference between the numbers on the Spincrease list (which is all stations), and what shows on the 7-day rolling chart (published panel)? "betty" shows just a +39 on the rolling chart, though +210 on the Spincrease list (25th biggest gainer). it's widespread, too- the Florida Georgia Line track is +572 on the rolling chart, and +1,901 on the Spincrease list. Spincrease factors in All Stations where as the Rolling Chart uses a smaller subset of stations.

^Yes, I had noted such- but looking at the Mediabase info from another site, it looks like the current numbers are right, and that the dates listed just haven't been updated. Nonetheless, the differences are much larger than normal.

"betty" inches up another spot to No. 33* on Billboard's Country Airplay chart. On Country Songs, it advances 29-20*.
And while "betty" does not re-enter the Hot 100 (it does the Canadian Hot 100, at No. 96), it debuts at No. 29 on the Digital Songs chart.
Still no news of a video for the song? or a second video from the album, for that matter?

unpopular opinion: i always thought this song sounds similar to Travis' Flowers in the window. I always singing Flowers on top of betty.

Just two Mediabase adds this week. Thus, do we see this only moving up a bit more before peaking? It's not looking like country radio will give this a heap of spins compared to the biggest songs at the moment.

It's not looking like country radio will give this a heap of spins compared to the biggest songs at the moment. Songs can take literally a year to peak at Country. This one is doing phenomenal for the length its been out. With it being a Taylor Swift song, yes, its possible it just fizzles out now BUT its more likely it spends another 20-25 weeks on the chart and continues to inch up.

yeah like Austin said--country is slower than molasses now. Maddie & Tae just took literally almost 2 whole years to hit #1 with their latest.
