Looks like we have a pretty decent Top 50 coming up. Van Halen Dreams and The Cars Tonight She Comes are two of their more boring songs, so they can get GTFO any moment now.... Other than that, not bad.

Hey, small enough sample of reveals that I don't need to put this behind a spoiler! That's rare. #60: I thought that the other Winwood songs were fine, but I didn't think they were particularly amazing. #59: I'm surprised this lasted as long as it did, really. #58: It was always going to be either this or another song as my first top ten loss, as I knew I was losing both early. I still assumed this would go out after the one and in the top half. #57: Whatever. #56: Meh. Looks like we have a pretty decent Top 50 coming up. Van Halen Dreams and The Cars Tonight She Comes are two of their more boring songs, so they can get GTFO any moment now.... Other than that, not bad. Good luck getting the one out any time soon.

This is some perfectly satisfying pop-rock from Huey Lewis and company that definitely captures that '80s sound. It's nothing exceptional per se, but I was figuring this one would make it a bit higher.
#69
It's still overproduced to the hilt, but there is some more meat to the songwriting here than on Can't Stop Rockin' at least - namely the chorus and verses don't sound nearly identical. The keyboards actually somewhat blend with the band's style rather than against it, and the chorus hook is reasonably effective. It's far from the greatest thing they did in their career, but with post-Eliminator ZZ, you take decent tracks where you can get them.
#68
Despite my low rating, I believe there's some stuff worth liking here - a few bits of good guitar work, a decent chorus, and a nice bridge - but Julian Lennon's vocals are flat and uninteresting and the murky production doesn't work for me.
#67
I like some of this band's earlier work, back when they had a unique mix of southern rock and pop hooks. In the 2nd half of the '80s though, they started going all in for that sleek AOR style, and I feel like their sound got watered down considerably. However, I will say that the chorus isn't bad, and this would definitely have gotten better than #92 for me in a weaker year - it's just a slightly subpar song in a year that doesn't have a lot of outright bad songs.
#66
I knew this one wasn't surviving until the top 50. Yes, it's another sappy '80s ballad, and I know fully why it's going out this early. However, I just love Boston's overall sound. Brad Delp was a great vocalist for the group, Tom Scholz's guitars sound excellent here, and their production and mixing are as crisp as you can get, which really stands out in an era that saw tons of issues with overproduction.
#65
Easily the better of this year's two .38 Special songs in my opinion - still has a tinge of southern rock mixed in with the stadium rock hooks. A perfectly fine radio single.
#64
Absolutely awful music video, but this is one of my favorite Huey tracks. It's goofy pop-rock fun with tons of pep, solid use of the band's saxophones, and some sarcastic lyrics from Huey. Really a shame to see this going out in the bottom half.
#63
The flat backing track and relatively subdued songwriting hurt this song. Billy Idol sounds like he's ready to burst out and deliver a huge hook at any moment, but the song just never gives him much of a chance to do so outside of the kind of weak climax. The #99 I gave it looks a bit too harsh for a song of this quality, but that's where it ended up.
#62
Outside of that rather corny bit of robo-voice, this was some excellent late career Jackson Browne. The music has a strong dramatic flair to it, the performance is fittingly tense, and Jackson Browne delivers a passionate performance on vocals. I particularly love that bridge with the keyboards and guitar. I figured it wouldn't go too high, but I was hoping for at least a top half finish.
#61
This actually made it quite a bit higher than I expected. BOC were not in their prime at this point to say the least. The band had lost multiple members and wrote basically none of the songs for this album. That being said, this song is shockingly good for what it is, and it's hard to get that "It doesn't matter if we turn to dust / Turn and turn and turn we must / Guess I'll see you dacin' in the ruins" bit out of your head.
#60
I'll go ahead and state that I really don't care for Steve Winwood in general (although he does have one song this year that I don't mind.) I find most of his '80s music too middle-of-the-road for my tastes. This isn't his worst - there's some life to the chorus here - but it's not something I'd rush out to hear again.
#59
This was a very difficult one for me to rank. Alan Parson's music had lost a lot of its unique prog edge by this point, but even at his most radio-friendly, Parsons always brought some interesting textures and unorthodox bits of songwriting to the table. I definitely would have bumped this one up a good bit if it had been the tighter single version - the album cut meanders around too much.
#58
A Kind of Magic is my 2nd least favorite Queen album, but this straight-forward stadium rocker provided a catchy high point in a decade where the band's quality control was all over the place. Sad to see it go out in the bottom half.
#57
A much better sample of Mellencamp than "Minutes to Memories" in my opinion. He put a bit more rock in his heartland rock here.
#56
Dang, 4 of my top 10s out before we even reach the top half. Daryl Hall sounds fine, but the production is what really won me over here - it has a sort of Electric Light Orchestra feel to it that I can't get enough of.

This next extra is a re-recording of the hit song originally released in 1980. This version is quite a bit different than the original.
EXTRA Don't Stand So Close to Me '86 The Police

In a decade where many past prime artists seemed intent on soldiering on no matter what, The Police really stand out as a band who left while they were on top. Synchronicity spent 17 weeks atop the Billboard 200, and all 4 singles from the album made both top 10 on the album rock chart and the top 20 on the Hot 100. The fact that they could reach the top 10 by rerecording a song that had just been a hit six years earlier shows that audiences were still wanting more, but it just wasn't meant to be.
