I know I've heard a few good songs from some of his '80s albums though. I agree about the remake; it's okay but unnecessary. I get that they wanted to spice up their hits compilation by offering a new track, but remaking a song that was already hit was the laziest way to do it. It reminds me of when the Gabriel-era Genesis lineup reunited in 1999 just to do a new version of Carpet Crawlers.

Catching up with the rank down! Sharing some comments on songs where my ranking had most difference with the final position in this RD. 100. It's Not You, It's Not Me (73): I agree that this is plain and nothing out of the ordinary. At the same time, neither the chorus nor the vocals or instrumentals were bad to me, whereas I did consider other songs bad... 95. Lying (78): I liked the more classic rock sound and vibe and especially the guitar work. The melody could've been much stronger, though. 93. Eye of the Zombie (74): I liked the slicker synth pop-like production. Again, melody could've been better, as well as vocals, and the sound effects were cringeworthy. 92. Can't Stop Rockin' (62): This maintained some of the fun of classic ZZ Top. I don't mind overproduction, but I can agree that they exaggerated the synth effects, and the faster speed made it sound a bit too fake, especially for a group like them that sounded quite genuinely rock in previous albums. 91. Harlem Shuffle (65): The first of this bunch that wasn't a discovery for me. It was a minor hit back home, and a personal top 15. I don't mind this at all. I think they put their own rock instrumental and vocal twist to this oldie, while maintaining some of the original groove. This was miles better to me than their 'Ugly' song so I'm a bit surprised this is also bottom 10. 88. Love Walks In (38): Oh! Well, I guess at least this left in the correct order amongst VH songs. I like the 80s pop-rock ballad melody -with some Survivor influence- and the doses of synth -with some ELP influence. The chorus, too, although I can see people not liking the completely subdued Hagar vocals. 87. Like a Rock (60): A nice discovery for me -I didn't know this was a song used in Chevrolet commercials. I liked his delivery and the classic rock ballad feel enough to escape my bottom 40. It doesn't bode well for their other song, though 86. The Knife Feels Like Justice (51): A good discovery. I kept coming back to that explosive and melodic chorus with the layered vocals, so with every listen I kept ranking it higher. It had a mix of Springsteen and 90s vibe that grabbed me. 85. One Hit (50): Another good discovery that sounded better with each listen. It had a more traditional rocker Stones sound, and the background female vocals were a nice addition. The melody is a bit too repetitive, though... Still, this was miles better than the Ugly song, so it's a bit surprising is barely 10+ spots higher. 84. Right & Wrong (100): I like several songs by JB, but I really dislike this one. His vocals were specially bad, and the melody in the chorus was annoying, including but not limited to the key change and the unnecessary pauses. Not even the nice piano salvaged it, as it felt outta place. 83. Be Good to Yourself (36): This was their last song to be played in pop stations back home. I've always liked the overall melody and the vocally and instrumentally explosive chorus. It's true that the keyboards gave it a poppier vibe, but I don't mind it as it still has strong guitar work, and overall high energy. Far too low in this RD... 78. American Storm (26): This was one of my favorite discoveries. Very strong melody, and a pretty good Springsteen-like heartland rock sound that fits his vocals and made it a very pleasant, uplifting experience. At least I helped it finish in the 70s 77. Girl Can't Help It (54): I also like the melody quite a bit, although the production veered a bit much into Hall & Oates, adult pop territory. 76. Sara (43): This is a classic ballad. A big hit back home, with good recurrent airplay, and a song that I've always liked as it connects with great memories of my Summer of 1986. I like the mix of sophistipop and rock ballad sound with strong vocals and melody. I didn't rank it higher just because it sounded a bit too pop in this list. Otherwise, I would've ranked it in my top 30. 75. Stuck With You (56): Just like Sara, I would've ranked it higher if this were a pop RD. One of my favorite HL songs, but a bit too pop for this list. That's why I gave the edge to Hip To Be Square in this rank down. 73. All the King's Horses (40): Another good discovery. I really liked its classic rock / progressive instrumental, and the overall melody, although the vocals could've been a bit harder especially in the chorus.

70. Jacob's Ladder - Huey Lewis & the NewsMy least favorite of the three we ranked, but its still a keeper. Who else is ranking Huey Lewis and the news' New material in 2020? 69. Stages - ZZ TopThe one song I felt they actually put some effort into. It didn't sound like rip off of their own songs. In fact the melody in the verses was a bit more poppy, and sounding like a Jeff Lynne production. It kinda fades away into the blue without any prior warning, but its still a good song. 68. Stick Around - Julian LennonJulian's musical style sounded different on every album. I think he kinda going for the latest Mr. Mister synthrock style here? Maybe a bit more guitar oriented. it wasn't bad. I just don't think Julian's vocals were the right tone for this songs. Billy Squier maybe? 67. Like No Other Night - .38 SpecialI don't like the fact that the true album rock vibe is dropping before some of those Modern Rock crossovers. "Strength in Numbers" was the last album to feature Don Barns vocal fire which is in fact my favorite aspect of the band so I put both .38 Special songs really high on my list. 66. Amanda - Boston This one is still my least favorite of all the Boston hits, but it's still a good song, and I wouldn't be surprised if Jani Lane got his inspiration for "Heaven" from this track. The song never got an official music video, but there are quite a few with these Amanda hotties on youtube. I think you chose the best one. Also these mediocre ranks for true album rock format just doesn't make any sense to me. 65. Somebody Like You - 38 SpecialI also ranked the two .38 Special rockers very close together. Anyway we are not even in the 50's and we are running out of guitar adrenaline. Remind me again why the other crappy .38 Special songs from '87 have ended up higher than these two classics. 64. Hip to Be Square - Huey Lewis & the NewsOrgans, harmonicas and brass with some Huey Lewis vocal perfection. All meant to cause your feet to uncontrollably start tapping away while the song plays. At least some of us felt it. 63. To Be a Lover - Billy IdolI love Billy idol, but I didn't like his songs off this album. I found this song particularly boring and lifeless, and those female backups. What the hell were they thinking? I'm just glad I didn't have to tank him on the Modern Rock RD for '86. 62. For America - Jackson BrowneThis was borderline decent for Jackson Browne. I 'll do much better with "Lawyers In Love" and even "Tender Is The Night". 61. Dancin' in the Ruins - Blue Öyster CultI like the harder rock tone of this song. I can't recall any other song from theirs between the years of 1980 and 1986, but this one really gave me those old early 80's Album rock vibes. How great was that chorus. 60. Split Decision - Steve WinwoodI understand his other two songs on this RD I put them super high myself, but a lesser known Steve Winwood song that barely got played on the radio beating out some of the biggest hits from Huey Lewis, .38 Special and ,Boston. Seriously? In all honesty this is a pretty good listen, but no way it should beat out the ones I just mentioned. 59. Stereotomy - The Alan Parsons ProjectThis sounded like a weird first time listen. The whole song consists of the music from The midbreak of Genesis extended version of "Abacab", and if you are not Genesis it isn't gonna sound right. This song also sounded like filler material from Starship's 'Knee Deep In The Hoopla' album. You have all these latest Rock effix with percussion and bass and it just wasn't a good combination to my ears. 58. One Vision - QueenI always thought this song sounded a bit too cheesy for Queen. I would put it higher on an RD with lesser known songs ,and it isn't a bad song per say. I just never liked the fact that Queen put it out. If you change Freddy's vocals for Bryan Adams you would have a song better suited for Bryan Adams. 57. Rumbleseat - John MellencampNow this is proper heartland rock. John really knew the recipe for NRGetic Heartland rock. Heartland Rock doesn't have to be boring or too "home on the range" sounding. For me John Mellencamp was king of Heartland rock. Question? How high will I rank "R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A."?56. Dreamtime - Daryl HallA great showing for Daryl's first solo attempt, but still too low. This song sounded a lot like Ric Ocasek's 90's material, but Daryl made it his own by adding his Blue eyed Soul vocal tones. Seriously Daryl Hall could put out a Heavy Metal song and still inject a Neo Soul vibe to it with his vocals. We also get to hear that Daryl was a great guitar player. we are nearing the top 50 and I still have 6 stinkers swimming in my bottom tank. This is not good.

{WORD WALLS: FOR EVERYONE!}#55: Interesting to see some of the disagreements I had with some of you here. I thought this was lame, but passable. #54: This should not have been the lower Moody Blues song, but it was always going to be. #53: I guess I'll be one of the basic bitches to say that, even though I'm not the biggest fan of it, the right one is highest. #52: I've had this song in my head for days, and I can't get it out. Despite where I ranked it, I kind of love it. It would have been a million times better with DLR on vocals, though. #51: Okay, sure. #50: "that Hot 100 success factor must really have some of you by the balls..." This is not one of the songs that should have been affected by that. #49: They have better. #48: Ehhhhhh. #47: gates is going to hate me for this, but the right one is lowest. :kii: #46: F uck Van Hagar.
