How do you listen to TOSOL and believe it's the worst song on this list...like come on man... Me neither. I remember liking Moody Blues at that time but when I listened the other day they sounded horrible, both MB songs.

#55 Asia gets a lot of flack for their excessive style and maximalist production, but if you can look beyond the cheese value, they had some great AOR hooks and engaging instrumental work. This definitely finished higher than I expected, and they have some better songs on the way over the next few years. #54 In my opinion, The Moody Blues made exactly one great song after Long Distance Voyager, and neither of this year's songs were it. Trading in the mellotrons and orchestras for digital synths was probably a good move financially, but being a fan of their classic material, almost everything they did this decade sounds dated and tacky to me. This song found an okay chorus hook, but not much else here appeals to me. #53 I've stated before I'm not a big Steve Winwood fan, and this track did nothing to win me over; it's just Winwood doing his usual thing. I will say the single cut probably would have gotten a few spots higher than the longer album version. #52 With it's mix of plentiful keyboards, Eddie Van Halen guitar solos, and Sammy Hagar's half shouted vocal performance, this is one of the codifying songs of the late '80s sound to me, and it's the peak of Van Hagar. If you're on board with Hagar Halen, you'll love this. If you aren't, this is probably a symbol of everything that went wrong. I don't personally like it going out this early, but I get it. I'm at least hoping that Van Halen's ratings improve when we get to the DLR material though. #51 Satisfying AOR with a great chorus. It ended up kind of low on my ranking, but I don't think it's bad by any means. #50 It's got some great lyrics and an emotive performance from Bruce Springsteen, but the backing music doesn't particularly grab me here. While not exactly my thing, I can certainly see how those who are more into singer/songwriter style tracks would appreciate this. #49 I initially had this one much lower (although still in my top 40), but it just kept creeping up my list. Very fun combination of heartland rock style and pop rock energy on this track - nice to see it make top half. #48 Hey, I got a perfect rating on this one. Much like our other track by a prog supergroup, this was a catchy bit of very '80s AOR, albeit much more low key than what Asia was doing stylistically. #47 With much of my top 10 dropping like flies, it's nice to know that at least Genesis and ex-members thereof have my back in this top 50. I agree with this being the lowest ranked Genesis song, but it's still a nice ballad. While I'm not the biggest fan of the direction Phil Collins' solo career was going at this time, Genesis had a way of elevating simple pop tunes during this era. Most of what they were writing on the Invisible Touch album admittedly wasn't trailblazing or even particularly original, but the group came through with the intangibles and the small touches to make it work. #46 Welp, we got one Van Hagar track into the top half, so there's that. That ratings gap is impressive. At any rate, I love this song - great mid-tempo rock with a very memorable chorus. #45 Oh man, this song. I remember when I was young this must have been the single most overplayed recurrent on every classic hits/adult contemporary stations in my area. There was a span of several years where I could barely stomach Robert Palmer. I flipped the station every time he came on. While I still don't think this is a particularly exciting song, I can begrudgingly admit that without the constant overexposure, it's a perfectly listenable '80s pop track.
#44
While Talking Heads weren't exactly in their prime by this point, this was a fun, simple little tune that shows the band at their most pop friendly.
#43
I can't help but notice that this has almost the exact opposite raking gap as "Why Can't This Be Love." I like the synthesizer hook in the chorus well enough, but I really wasn't feeling the vocals on this one, and that's a problem given how prominent they are on this track.
#42
A decent AOR track, although noticeably weaker than their other big Rocky song "Eye of the Tiger" (which is more direct) and John Cafferty's Rocky IV song Heart's on Fire. The middle 20 is a perfect place for it to go out.
#41
I imagine this was probably too long-winded for some, but this is one of the best things Bowie did in the '80s in my opinion. The gradual sense of buildup throughout the verses, the trickling piano work, and the understated hooks come together perfectly here. The winding song structure and subtle approach Bowie takes here certainly contrast against the more immediate, direct songwriting he was doing throughout most of the '80s, making this song stand out in his extensive catalog.

Three people's 100's still remain? Wow. It would be wild if it were the same song...
I keep waiting for Tonight She Comes to leave. I get it, Pulse loves the Cars. I love the Cars. That said, this song blows, their worst single of all time IMO.
Thrilled to see Big Country make the Top 40.

I had a post ready, and, for some reason, my browser went to another page, and I lost the post. Let's see if I can remember what I was about to post. #45: So, uh, wow. I cannot say I was expecting this to miss the top 25, let alone top 40. #44: Same, Rowell. Same. #43: Okay, that was decidedly not the song I was expecting. #42: "Doc Indie Party Rock : 11" Who are you, and what have you done to Doc? (Oh, don't act so surprised that I ranked a main Journey song in the top ten.) #41: I'm actually more upset about a song that wasn't in my top ten going out, because I had zero expectations for "Burning Heart", and I had every expectation that Bowie's best mid-to-late 80's song would at least make the top 40. I can figure out why most of my remaining lowest songs would still be in. Why is " Your Wildest Dreams", of all songs, still in? #42 A decent AOR track, although noticeably weaker than their other big Rocky songs "Eye of the Tiger" (which is more direct) and "Burning Heart" (which is more dramatic.) The middle 20 is a perfect place for it to go out. huh

Except Heart's on Fire isn't even a Survivor song, it's a John Cafferty song. That's what I get for trying to rush-write my comments before lunch.

And now here's the winner of the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal performance in 1987
Back Where You Started Tina Turner
Two songs still to come on this list, Sex As A Weapon and Talk To Me were the runners-up for that Grammy in 1987. (The Bonnie Raitt extra rowell just posted, No Way To Treat A Lady was another). Tina was a consistent winner in this category along with Pat Benatar all through the 80s. (4 wins apiece)
