"Do You Hear What I Hear?" leaves us at #7, the final song from the holiday edition of Carnival Ride. I love this song but I've grown rather tired of it over the years. I've heard it often enough on the radio. It's all my country station ever plays when picking a Carrie holiday song. Like...no variety. It is ALWAYS DYHWIH. Every. Single. Year. This song, written in 1962 and covered by hundreds of artists over its nearly 60 years, started out poorly but quickly made it into the Top 10 thanks to some higher rankings. A couple more bottom 5 rankings sent this back near the bottom but it recovered throughout the end of the submission process, settling at #7.

My ranking has fallen apart, lol. I am surprised though that Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee is still in. However, the people who love that song seem to LOVE that one.

"Do You Hear What I Hear" and "Mary, Did You Know" are two of my very favorite Christmas songs regardless of who's singing. MDYK is one of those where no version ever really surpasses Rogers & Wynonna for me, but I thought Carrie did a great job all the same. Her version of DYHWIH is one of the best, imo, and yet still somehow pales in comparison to the majority of My Gift! She really went all out vocally on her Christmas album.

This top 6 is extremely disappointing. "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee" and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" are both WAY too high. "Mary Did You Know" and "Silent Night" deserved better as did "Do You Hear What I Hear". Carries version of DYHWIH is one of the VERY few versions of this song that I actually like (Martina's is the only one I enjoy more).

At long last, castleoblivion26 will be pleased to find that "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee" misses out on the Top 5. This takes with it his last place, while on the other end, bboat11 and toomuchboy lose their #1s. It was never going to leave the Top 10 and at the onset proved to be a strong competitor. There were a plethora of #12 rankings, however, which prevented the song from doing any better than #3. It eventually settled for #6 towards the very end of the submission process, after trying a couple times to crack the Top 5. "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee" is a 1907 poem written by Henry van Dyke with the intention of musically setting it to the tune of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy," the final movement of Symphony No. 9. Van Dyke said this of the hymn: "These verses are simple expressions of common Christian feelings and desires in this present time—hymns of today that may be sung together by people who know the thought of the age, and are not afraid that any truth of science will destroy religion, or any revolution on earth overthrow the kingdom of heaven. Therefore this is a hymn of trust and joy and hope."The song is known for its march-y beat, and Carrie sought to find a way to distance the song from that kind of melody, saying that producer Greg Wells had the idea of Carrie singing a cappella. She tried it and was so pleased with the result that they kept it and used it as the opening to My Gift. And what an opening it is. It's such a heavenly take on the Ode to Joy, and on first listen I was mesmerized by her vocals. I'm saddened that this missed out on the Top 5 but am very impressed with its performance overall!

Kicking off the Top 5 is "O Come All Ye Faithful," which left as the second-least polarizing song. daddy is the next to lose their #1 (and in fact, we will see #1 losses from here on out). This song proved to be quite a formidable force, sailing through the submission process with relative ease. Our Top 2 was too powerful for anything to break through, but OCAYF did manage to make it as high as #3, and in fact did so a number of times. A couple lower ranks towards the end hit the song and it maintained a spot at #5 as the final three lists came in.

Yeah, this placement for "Do You Hear What I Hear" is definitely disappointing. To me, it's basically her definitive holiday song. If you hear one song from her on the radio every holiday season, it's this one. It helps that there are not really a whole lot of versions to choose from. Martina will always have THE definitive version to me (and clearly to a few of us, since hers finished in the top 5 of her Christmas rankdown!) but Carrie's is really good too. I still hear both of their versions on the radio all the time this time of year, and love them both.
I just love her performance of "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee" so much! I can't think of a single professional vocalist that I have ever heard cover this one before, and it is very much more of an old church hymn than an actual pop-culture song, so I was interested to see how it turned out... And it turned out soooo beautifully! This is honestly my favorite vocal from her on the album. This is the one and only classic song on the album that she actually makes her own and improves from pre-existing versions.

Just missing the Top 3 is "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas." I absolutely loved this song before Carrie did anything with it, and hers has now become an absolute favorite and likely my go-to version for years to come. There is just something about her vocal delivery on some of these lines, coupled with the context of 2020, that makes it hit so much harder than normal. This is another moment on My Gift during which I was left breathless.
Three people lose their #1s, along with a few Top 5s. This was another quite formidable beast in the submission process, only leaving the Top 5 for a grand total of three lists midway through. It was quickly able to establish some authority and settled comfortably at #4 as the final lists trickled in.

I'm kind of saddened to see DYHIWH out before top 5, mainly because I did want SOMETHING from the Carnival Ride set to hit the top 5. I still think if we redo this rankdown next year or something, the CR songs will probably perform a bit better. My Gift still has the "novelty" of being new at this point, which will eventually wear off. My Gift is obviously "better" but that Carnival Ride EP is just fantastic.
JJWAT...eh. It's good, she sounds great on it, but it's not my favorite. There are definitely better songs on here.
I think OCAYF does a better job accomplishing what JJWAT set out to do...better vocal, better song imo.
HYAMLC is interesting because I actually feel like I overranked this. Kelly Clarkson's version of this is slightly better than Carrie's imo, but Carrie's is still really good. Having said that, I think my issue is the song itself. I find I really have to be in the mood to specifically listen to it.
FTOY, Hallelujah and O Holy Night (2020) is an interesting top 3. I know what I'm rooting for.

Yaasss castleoblivion26 finally your flop taste aligns with mine!!!! Castle and I both already said this already multiple times in multiple different Christmas threads, but "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" is just not a very satisfying listen from anyone other than Martina. Many have tried, and every single one of them has just left me insanely bored. It's so weird to me, because based on her version I always thought it was one of my favorite Christmas songs! But as more and more versions have disappointed me through the years, I've realized it's more about Martina's artistic approach to the song than it is about the song itself. She does everything right to make it a timeless, emotional, compelling, and climactic listen. Nobody else really gives the song any sort of ebb and flow, if that makes any sense. I can see why people love Carrie's version, but to me it's just an unwanted gift wrapped in a pretty bow, lol.

"Joyful, Joyful" is such a sobering opening to the album. It's incredibly captivating. I would've liked top 5 or top 3, but I was expecting worse considering the complaints about it still being around, lol.
Her voice really shines with that jazzy quality of HYaMLC. One of my favorite versions of the song, simply because I rarely pay attention to this song (everyone has a version of it) which means her take had to draw attention to itself for it to even register.

'Tis the season we've been waiting for (Waiting, don't keep me waiting) Oh, can't you feel it knocking at your door? (Knock knock, it's knocking on the door)
Love pouring out like the snow from the sky Snuggled up together sitting by the fire Oh, it's magical, it's my favorite time Pretty little wishes tied up in a bow And every little kiss is like we're underneath the mistletoe It's music to my ears

Taking home the bronze this Christmas Eve night is "Favorite Time of Year," which was released on November 12 as an Amazon Music-exclusive bonus track on My Gift. It is a jam and a half that takes four #1s with it, which is tied with the winning song as the most amount of #1s in the rankdown! I can't wait for this to smash all over the place next holiday season. This is tailor made for radio and its just waiting to be Carrie's AIWFCIY.
This song managed to make it to the Top 2 early on and developed quite a lead, but just about midway through was pushed out of the Top 5. That was very brief, however, as the song quickly returned to #3 before rinsing and repeating. #3 was where it would comfortably remain for the rest of the submission process.

"Favorite Time Of Year" is sooooooo freaking good! How on earth did this get bottom 5 ranks?!
I am still beyond dead at this song getting released the way that it was. For it to come out as an Amazon Exclusive song, advertised separately from the album, literally the same year her Christmas album came out... It just felt so bizarre. But honestly, a song like this was sorely missing from the album, so I am glad it came out. It should have been on the actual tracklist. You could combine the collective energies of every song on the album and not even generate 1/4 of the excited energy that this song puts off.
