I’m a little bit torn right now on whether this year’s top 5 is better than last year’s, it kinda helps that one of the songs on last year’s top 5 is also on this year’s but I’m just so torn.

In my opinion, the only truly great year ends in my lifetime were 2004 and 1998. I cannot put 2020 in that category based on the abnormally high number of forgettable one-week #1 debuts.

Let’s compare
2020: -Blinding Lights: 10/10 -The Box: 9.5/10 -Circles: 9/10 -Don’t Start Now: 10/10 -Rockstar: 8.5/10
2021 (currently) -Levitating: 10/10 -Mood: 5/10 -Driver’s License: 7/10 -Blinding Lights: 10/10 -Save Your Tears: 8/10
So yeah, 2020 has it beat

It’s funny because Blinding Lights and Mood were my two best hit songs of 2020 last year and now they’re both locked in the top 10.

2004
Yeah! - 10/10 Burn - 9.5/10 If I Ain't Got You - 10/10 This Love - 9.5/10 The Way You Move - 9.5/10 [The Reason - 10/10]
1998
Too Close - 9.5/10 The Boy Is Mine - 10/10 You're Still the One - 9.5/10 Truly Madly Deeply - 9.5/10 How Do I Live - 8.5/10
[If only Airplay songs were added earlier, we could have had Iris instead of HDIL, and that would have raised the score even more.]

I think I've said this before in other threads, but people really overhype 2019 and 2020 as years for music IMO (same applies to 2021 thus far). I think 2019 and 2020 were better music-wise than 2016-2018 ('16 and '17 in particular sucked hard), but calling them all-time greats is just ridiculous (look at 1983 for that).

Technically that would make 2021>2020 but they both are strong years (so far).

Is this gonna be the first time the last year ye #1 endd up in the top 5 of the next year? Yes, the closest was CITW 1997/TWYLT, which finished #8 in 1998 after being the YE#1 in 1997.

PositivityMaster48, you did a great job, but I would remind you that Miley Cyrus is not credited anymore on Without You, both for the Hot 100 and the YE charts.

So I will remove the Miley Cyrus credit starting on this week’s predictions which I will post tomorrow. 😎 Thanks for the compliment though.

Speaking of Miley, what a shame she won't have any YE hits in arguably one of her best eras ever.

After she left Disney Channel, there was the Can’t Be Tamed era, the Bangerz era, the Younger Now era, and of course, that album in 2015 that we don’t talk about

Songs that have not yet crossed the cutoff that I predict will make the year end: One Too Many, Pov, Glad You Exist, Settling Down, Famous Friends, Lil Bit, Bad Habits, You Right, Thot Shit, Fancy Like, Every Chance I Get, Leave Before You Love Me, Yonaguni, Blame It On You, Late At Night, Wockesha, Traitor, Todo De Ti, Beggin', Way Less Sad, Arcade, Chasing After You, Stay, Motley Crew
Other possible contenders that I'm not sure about: Single Saturday Night, Drinkin' Beer Talkin' God Amen, Ain't Shit, Things A Man Oughta Know, Favorite Crime, Straightenin, Ski, You, My Life, Drunk, Country Again, A-O-K, You Should Probably Leave, Permission To Dance
Songs like Chasing After You, You Should Probably Leave, Lil Bit, Drunk and Fancy Like we should expect to stick around for a while as they are already present on the charts despite country radio still yet to be in full play, just depends on how long they take and will it take too long to make the year end for some of them

Songs that have not yet crossed the cutoff that I predict will make the year end: One Too Many, Pov, Glad You Exist, Settling Down, Famous Friends, Lil Bit, Bad Habits, You Right, Thot s**t, Fancy Like, Every Chance I Get, Leave Before You Love Me, Yonaguni, Blame It On You, Late At Night, Wockesha, Traitor, Todo De Ti, Beggin', Way Less Sad, Arcade, Chasing After You, Stay, Motley Crew Other possible contenders that I'm not sure about: Single Saturday Night, Drinkin' Beer Talkin' God Amen, Ain't s**t, Things A Man Oughta Know, Favorite Crime, Straightenin, Ski, You, My Life, Drunk, Country Again, A-O-K, You Should Probably Leave, Permission To Dance Songs like Chasing After You, You Should Probably Leave, Lil Bit, Drunk and Fancy Like we should expect to stick around for a while as they are already present on the charts despite country radio still yet to be in full play, just depends on how long they take and will it take too long to make the year end for some of them This seems like a pretty accurate list, IMO. If all the songs from your first list make the YE along with the 68 that have already passed TOTC's cutoff, that would leave 8 remaining spots, probably for a combination of a few songs from your second list and other songs that either haven't been released or haven't debuted yet. (It also wouldn't be impossible for songs like Goosebumps, Breaking Up Was Easy..., Damage, etc. to sneak on if the songs from your second list aren't stable enough.)

Well, Butter single handedly destroyed my interest in the charts, I hope the BTS stans are happy with themselves

So Levitating is in week 40. How long do we think it lasts on the charts? I’m thinking about 70 weeks total

I find it funny that none of the tracks from the Lil Baby x Lil Durk project is going to make any list but the Khaled song with both of them on it will. I’m not a fan of tagging on songs that they are are featured on or songs that were released so long in the past you forgot it even came out, but I feel like they should’ve done it with putting ECIG on the project.

JANUARY/DECEMBER YEAR END - Week 29 I think starting from January 16 chart makes more sense for the actual year, due to tracking starting on January 1st.

So Levitating is in week 40. How long do we think it lasts on the charts? I’m thinking about 70 weeks total The Christmas season is going to prevent Levitating from getting there. It also doesn't help that Levitating has gone recurrent on pop radio already. It's radio fall will not be as gentle as Blinding Lights, which was kept on pop radio until late February/early March. I'm going to say 57 weeks, and that would put us to the 11/13 chart. Keep in mind, Circles fell off the 11/14/2020 chart.

JANUARY/DECEMBER YEAR END - Week 29 I think starting from January 16 chart makes more sense for the actual year, due to tracking starting on January 1st. Ok. So, I should delete two weeks from the counting, right?

JANUARY/DECEMBER YEAR END - Week 29 I think starting from January 16 chart makes more sense for the actual year, due to tracking starting on January 1st. I totally get this argument (and back when the TOTC website still existed, there was an option for this on their YE page), but the main reason I prefer we start with the first dated chart of 2021 as opposed to a YTD system is because the way Billboard’s tracking weeks have been applied throughout their history has been incredibly inconsistent. At one point in the 2010s (after the Global Release Day shift to Friday in mid-2015 but before Billboard recalibrated the chart weeks in late 2017), the tracking week for a certain chart started a little over three weeks before the appropriate chart’s date. Doing it based on the chart date creates consistency across all the Jan.-Dec. YEs made so far and avoids any confusing anomalies.
