December 26, 197001 02 My Sweet Lord / Isn't It a Pity - George Harrison (1st of 4 weeks at #1)02 03 One Less Bell To Answer - The 5th Dimension 03 01 Tears Of a Clown - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles 04 06 Knock Three Times - Dawn 05 05 Black Magic Woman - Santana 06 04 I Think I Love You - The Partridge Family 07 07 Stoned Love - The Supremes 08 08 Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is - Chicago 09 09 Gypsy Woman - Brian Hyland 10 10 No Matter What - Badfinger After the Beatles "officially" broke up in April 1970 with Paul McCartney's announcement that he was leaving the group, everybody wondered what would happen to the individual ex-Beatles as they embarked upon their solo careers; which one of the former Beatles would end up with the most successful solo career? Paul released a solo album right after his announcement, but McCartney wasn't exactly what the critics and the Beatles fans were waiting for, even though it did make it to #1 on the Billboard album chart. John also released a solo album before the end of the year, Plastic Ono Band, which a lot of the critics were impressed by, but it didn't do all that well commercially. Ringo even released a couple of albums during this time period, but they weren't that successful critically or commercially. To everybody's surprise it was George Harrison who initially had the most success with his first real solo album; All Things Must Pass, which was released towards the end of 1970. Full of songs that George had tried unsuccessfully to get on to later Beatle albums, All Things Must Pass proved to be popular with both the fans and the critics. So popular that it wasn't long before George become the second former Beatle to score a #1 album on the Billboard album chart, as well as the first to score a #1 hit on the Hot 100. "My Sweet Lord" b/w "Isn't It A Pity" topped the Hot 100 for four weeks beginning with the week ending December 26th, 1970. It was a wonderful Christmas present for George, but what came next wasn't so great, on the very last day of 1970, Paul announced that he was suing the other three former Beatles in order to get out of their partnership. Happy New Year ex-Beatles!

Promotion on Twitter is promotion. I mean, it’s the absolute least but sure. Let’s lump it in with promotion that requires actual effort, and has cost. Lol right?! Plus, she has a reputation to uphold as the “Queen of Christmas”. She’s being festive in her social media as she should.

December 27, 198001 03 (Just Like) Starting Over - John Lennon (1st of 5 weeks at #1)02 02 More Than I Can Say - Leo Sayer 03 04 Love On The Rocks - Neil Diamond 04 01 Lady - Kenny Rogers 05 06 Hungry Heart - Bruce Springsteen 06 10 Every Woman In The World - Air Supply 07 08 Guilty - Barbra Streisand & Barry Gibb 08 11 The Tide Is High - Blondie 09 09 Hit Me With Your Best Shot - Pat Benatar 10 12 Tell It Like It Is - Heart During the summer of 1980, John Lennon took a trip to Bermuda with his young son, Sean. While there, he saw a type of flower that the locals called "A Double Fantasy". Lennon loved the name, saying that it captured his relationship with his wife Yoko Ono perfectly, and when it came time to name what would be the last album he would ever record, he decided to call it Double Fantasy.Five years earlier, Lennon had all but given up on the music business after his and Ono's son Sean was born. He decided to stay at home and take care of their new baby rather then continue with his still lucrative recording career. In 1980, he decided to return to recording and so Double Fantasy was recorded between August and October 1980 in NYC. In October 1980, he released his first single in over 5 years as well, "(Just Like) Starting Over" which started to climb the Billboard Hot 100 soon after that. On November 17th, 1980, the album Double Fantasy was officially released, and at first it only moved sluggishly up the charts. While the first single "(Just Like) Starting Over" kept moving up the Hot 100 at a steady pace, and had even reached the top 10 by the week ending Dec 13th. On Monday, December 8th, at around 5:30 pm, Lennon and Ono left for the studio, but before they did, Lennon stopped to sign autographs in front of the Dakota. One of the people who asked him to sign his newly purchased copy of Double Fantasy, was a dark haired, glasses wearing man named Mark David Chapman. There is a picture that was taken by chance at the exact moment that Lennon signed Chapman's album, and it is very creepy to behold; you realize looking at it that nobody (save Chapman) had any idea what was to happen only a few hours later. Lennon and Ono returned to the Dakota at around 10:50 pm, but instead of having their limo driver drive them all the way into the courtyard, for some reason they asked to be dropped off outside the entrance and said they would take the short walk into the courtyard themselves. They had just walked past the arch that led to the inner courtyard when out of the cold, dark night the words "Mr. Lennon..." were heard, immediately after that Chapman shot two bullets into Lennon's back, and two more into his shoulder, mortally wounded him. Despite their best efforts to get Lennon to the hospital as soon as possible, he was pronounced dead on arrival. When the news hit, the country and then the world went into mourning, and thousands of Beatles fans gathered outside the Dakota, remembering John, the Beatles, and indeed their own lost youth. The first full week after Lennon's murder, "(Just Like) Starting Over" jumped to #1 on the Hot 100 and stayed there for five weeks. Shortly thereafter, the album Double Fantasy leaped to the top of the Billboard 200 album chart as well. It certainly didn't start out that way, but now both had become posthumous hits in the wake of Lennon's tragic death.

Let’s not pretend like AIWFCIY isn’t one of the most heavily promoted songs of all time. Mariah’s performed that song an insane amount of times, she just released a whole Christmas special that features the song including in ads, it’s featured multiple times in one of the biggest Christmas movies ever, it has multiple video versions including one released last year, had tons of remixes and covers, has been discounted to $0.69 for multiple years in the past, etc. Of course people love the song and it would be super successful without all that promo, but let’s not act like Mariah just put the song out and let it do it’s thing without promoting.

No shade to Mariah, I am a lamb and live for her domination, but we can’t pretend like the song isn’t currently benefiting from all the countless promotion it’s received in its lifetime.

You are still missing the point. This started from a comment or more about Mariah "losing" to Taylor. Some of us were pointing out Mariah wasn't engaged in a competition. Mariah wasn't the one increasingly promoting throughout the week and using new tactics to bump her song during the week. AGAIN, it was about last week specifically. No one denied "AIWFCIY" has been promoted in general or benefited from previous promotion. That's just irrelevant to the discussion.

That comment about Mariah "losing" is illogical, to be fair. She has a 26-year-old song, while the other song is from the most popular female singer in the US atm, her lead single, with a lot of promotion and remixes. It's no shame to Mariah "losing" it, especially if you take into consideration that the song already has 4 weeks at #1.

Unless something changes in the Christmas music market, Mariah's song will get a week or two at number one each year for the next several years.
Taylor Swift's current songs won't last on top that long

get that Holy out of the top 10, and let Last Christmas!!! I don’t really care who is number one, congrats to whomever gets it. But can we celebrate the fact that women will be locking down the top 3 positions based on that prediction? And that one is over 30, one is over 50 and one is over 75? Ps: I would also love “last Christmas” to go top 10 and “rocking’ around” to eventually go to number one! That would be awesome.

Yeah, Taylor may have just clinched the #1. The streaming was incredibly close between her and Mariah.

Yeah, Taylor may have just clinched the #1. The streaming was incredibly close between her and Mariah. Mariah may have it, as the prediction by TOTC had Willow sales at 55k.
