Honestly I never expected "Willow" to beat "All I Want For Christmas Is You" this week as I didn't think sales would be enough to take it (and they still may not be enough). IF "Willow" does end up at the top, it will be insanely impressive IMO as "AIWFCIY" is a literal behemoth 2-3 weeks out of every year and this will be one of them. Push or not, it will be an impressive feat. "AIWFCIY" isn't a song that really needs promotion as it is a standard at this point (though I am sure her recent Christmas special and social media presence helps). Honestly I am fine with either or taking it as I love both and a #2 peak won't kill Taylor and Mariah will get another week this year or next regardless. I don't know why fans get so wrapped up in these moments (Twitter especially is a mess as always). A #1 for your fav isn't a #1 for you. lol

Mariah losing to Taylor would be amazing Can you lose if you don't even compete? Mariah didn't do a single thing to push "AIWFCIY" on the Hot 100 last week. Taylor and her team meanwhile... Have you seen Mariah's Twitter..that's still promotion.

Meanwhile, no one's really noticing Republic HUGE 'promotion' to push 'Positions' to #1 on Pop radio in quick time, which I'm guessing is the primary reason why it's holding unexpectedly well on H100. I've noticed. At one point it had basically stalled around #10 or so, and then it suddenly took off and has had huge gains for a few weeks now. Streams and downloads are underwhelming. Reminiscent of LWYMMD or basically any contending song on Country 'Max Spins!' Airplay chart. Taylor hitting #1 - no one suffers. MC owns Xmas, hit #1 this season + likely the first #1 for '21. NOW if Brenda Lee ends up at #2 this chart week, cue the meltdowns from those who love having a Pulse Meltdown.

And yeah position-wise (no pun intended) it's still one of the higher non-holiday songs in streaming, but for a new Ariana song it isn't doing all that great. To some degree it's doing well due to lack of competition.

That's all. I'm not saying it's wrong. Why does everyone get so defensive over general comments. It's a freaking discussion board. And because I mentioned her Twitter, Colson wants to claim I'm stalking Mariah. Lol, I swear some people.

Streaming question: Does Billboard distinguish/weigh differently plays on streaming services that people actively seek out (say, via search) and plays generated via a playlist? Because how I see it, the latter isn't much different than something like Pandora. A playlist is a form of programmed music; the user chooses to listen to it, it is true, though the user also chooses which station to listen to on Pandora, or on regular radio.

^If I'm not mistaken, they don't. The only differentiation that I'm aware that Billboard has for Spotify is between streams from paid or free accounts.

^Yeah, that I knew. Just seems a bit arbitrary to count outlets like Pandora less than plays that come via set playlists.
On the topic of No. 1. Not sure why some are so into a tizzy. If "All I Want..." hadn't already hit No. 1 (and for multiple weeks), I could see the competitive spirit. Why is this week viewed so importantly, because it's Christmas week? It will likely return to the top the following week, anyhow.
The Apple-special version may not get applied to the original version, though it does "count" for the Hot 100- if it had enough points, it would appear as its own entry. Mimi's also done interviews and such during the holiday season, so has has been promoting. Last year was the 25th anniversary of the song and album, so there was a bigger push, for sure.

^Spotify should have the data. I would say it is mostly that Billboard hasn't needed to ask for it, since their currently rules don't account for the differentiation.

Yeah, imo, AIWFCIY staying at no.1 this week is just an icing on the cake. It's just that Mariah will break the record earlier for Xmas song with the most weeks at no.1, beating The Chipmunk. Also maybe some Mariah fans / anti Taylor will be so happy if Mariah blocks Taylor after some desperate attempts. A cool and competitive week by the way. But the following week is more important, Mariah is guaranteed to hit no.1. That week will be a huge record-breaking week, cause Mariah will be the first artist to have a song hitting no.1 in 3 different years (2019, 2020, 2021).

Promotion on Twitter is promotion. I mean, itβs the absolute least but sure. Letβs lump it in with promotion that requires actual effort, and has cost.
