In previous years Christmas Day wasn't enough to help these songs stay on the chart. That's why there was some surprise. Holiday songs had a bigger Christmas Day than usual (relatively at least) and then hung on a bit better than expected the next 1-2 days.

I guess I should rephrase, It makes sense TO ME(surprise to others) because it seems reasonable to assume that Christmas songs do not get unilaterally shut off in people's homes the second the calendar turns to 12/26

Yet that has absolutely not been the pattern until this year.  Had 2/3 been the pattern, nobody would be surprised.  However it was not the pattern until this year.

There have been many years when Christmas songs were allowed to chart that isolated songs have hung on a week or two after Christmas. Christmas market is bigger now, rules for charting have been loosened. So easier to see

Anyway - yes --- I get that it is a surprise to others. Based on everything I posted, My opinion is the opposite

it was not a normal or progressive increase ss had been happening.  

it isn't about people play Christmas songs after Christmas Day.  Of course they do. We all know that, we aren't stupid. It is about the dramatic increase THIS year for Christmas Day and the days after, thst definitely impacted the charts in a non typical manner.
