Definitely hear the similarities in the 2. I'm just happy to hear Highway Patrol anytime!

I figured "Once You've Had The Best" wouldn't do all too well since it's on the slower side and I imagine the classic versions aren't too familiar to most of the participants. I vastly prefer George Jones' version however. Alan's is good but there's something missing from it that George just brought so perfectly.
"My Own Kind Of Hat" is a little surprising for me to see out so early, it's long been a favorite for me. Alan does a fantastic version but I do prefer Merle's still. There's only a handful of Merle covers I prefer over the originals.
"Revenooer Man" I loved as a child it's so so catchy! However looking back at it now I just don't connect to it the same way. Still fun to hear when it comes on. And yes "Highway Patrol" has a lot of similarities! Nice little cameo from Junior here haha!
"The Way I Am" by Merle is another classic I adore, and I don't particularly care too much for Alan's take on it in comparison.
"Farewell Party" is such an underrated song in the country classic cannon. I never have settled on who's version I prefer overall but Joe Nichols' is also quite good!
My only surprise at this point is that "Margaritaville" is still in, would've thought Jimmy would drag it down.

And this question is for the likes of gardyfan, Kanenrá:ke and George Strait Junkie who may be the only few familiar with the artist, but is it just me or isn't there a striking resemblance to “Revenooer Man” and Junior Brown's "Highway Patrol"?! It only dawned on me recently that the two seem to be quite similar. Wow I’ve never thought of that of course don’t think I’ve ever played them back to back but yeah almost same melody and sung in a similar way

Good evening y'all! Before I reveal the two songs that miss the top 5, I do want to advise some caution as there will be a painful loss to be had for a handful of participants :'(

Not that the song needs any introduction, but just in case some of y'all have been living under a rock all this time..."Margaritaville" was first released by Jimmy Buffett in 1977 from his seventh studio album album Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes. The song actually has a connection to the city of Austin as well as Jimmy got the idea for it from a drink he ordered at a then local Mexican restaurant. He ended up writing most of the song one night at a friend's house in Austin, and finished it while spending time in Key West. It still remains Buffett's highest charting solo single as it reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 chart while also going number one on the Easy Listening chart and peaking at No. 13 on the Hot Country Songs chart. Believe it or not, this only managed to sneak into its highest ranking position at the very last moment as beforehand it was mostly in the back of the top 10. That certainly comes to the likely chagrin of the four who put this down in their bottom 2 including a pair of last place rankings from bboat11 and gardyfan. While most of the rankings would fall closer to the back of the top 10, it did pick up some top 5 support from both castleoblivion26 and Kris Kringle as well as a top two from someguy. I myself was quite surprised to see this do so well as much like the rest of you, I just assumed since Jimmy Buffett's name was attached it would likely leave much sooner than it did. That said, I do have to admit that I always enjoy hearing this whenever I revisit the album and more than not never skip over it.

I like "Margaritaville" well enough, I always thought it was a big hit because I hear it everywhere. I take this over "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" honestly.

"The Blues Man" was first written and recorded in 1980 by Hank Williams Jr. for his thirty-first studio album Habits Old and New. Alan Jackson then recorded it for this album in which it was released as its second single which respectively reached No. 37. While it likely comes as no surprise that this was our most polarizing song, it's still quite disappointing to see it miss the top 5 considering that it was a contender to finish there for much of its run. That was fueled in part by the four #1 rankings it received from myself, castleoblivion26, bboat11, and gardyfan. In fact, it wasn't until the last few lists came in that its first bottom 2 ranking would come along in the way of a last place from 🌺CountryLineDancer. That was enough to push it outside the top 5 altogether as it was never able to recover from that despite an additional top 3 ranking from Kris Kringle.

There's some days where I think "The Blues Man" is the best single from the album, and can climb all the way to my #2 overall from the album. Other times I just don't find myself caring for Alan's version. The curse of cover albums I guess.
It was my lowest remaining but I wouldn't have minded if it survived two more places at least.

Written by the great Bob McDill, "Right in the Palm of Your Hand" was first recorded by Crystal Gayle in 1976. Mel McDaniel would later record and release it in 1981 as the fourth and final single from his album I'm Countryfied. His version would go on to peak at number 10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. I'm personally glad to see this do so well as it has long been a favorite of mine from the album. This is also the first song revealed thus far which maintained a consistent status at or near the top 5 over the course of its run. That is thanks in part to the strong level of support it received with seven of the participants placing this within their top 5 which included a pair of #1 rankings from both .indulgecountry and kw9461. Everyone else placed this somewhere within their top 10 as it did not receive any bottom two rankings.

Yet another song that needs no introduction, "Kiss An Angel Good Mornin'" was recorded by Charley Pride and released in October 1971 as the first single from the album Charley Pride Sings Heart Songs. The song of course went on to become one of his signature hits and was also Pride's only single to reach the Top 40 on the pop charts, peaking at #21 on the Billboard Hot 100, and also went into the Top Ten of the Adult Contemporary charts. This came in as our third least polarizing song which didn't come as a surprise to me as it's yet another standout cover. It pretty much was able to maintain its top 5 status for the majority of its run and even briefly snuck into the top 3 a couple of times. Despite picking up one lone bottom two from kw9461, the majority of the group placed this somewhere within their top 5 including a pair of top 2s from Kanenrá:ke and 🌺CountryLineDancer.

While "Pop a Top" was originally written and recorded by Nat Stuckey in 1966, the first hit version was released by Jim Ed Brown in May 1967 and peaked at number 3 on the Billboard country singles chart. It of course was later revived by Alan as the lead-off single from this project where it peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart in early 2000. With only four participants placing this outside of their top 5, this was a consistent contender to finish inside the top 3 as the remaining rankings all came from within the top 4! A handful of us ended up putting this right inside our very own top 3 with Kris Kringle being the only one to put this at the top of his list.

"She Just Started Liking Cheatin' Songs" was written by the late Kent Robbins and originally recorded by John Anderson. It was released in March 1980 and reached #13 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart.
"It Must Be Love" is the second song to be written by Bob McDill and was originally recorded by Don Williams who released it in July 1979. The song was Williams' ninth Number One single on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles charts. Alan would also take this to number one on the country charts as it was released as the projects third and final single.

And there we have it folks! As predicted, "It Must Be Love" was the runaway winner as once it took a hold of the top spot it never left. Coming in as our second least polarizing song, only one participant put this outside of their top 5 with the majority of the participants putting this in their top 2. Of those, four ranked this as their #1 song including Cody Wants Out..., ClevelandRox, someguy, and 🌺CountryLineDancer. “She Just Started Liking Cheatin' Songs” comes in not only as the highest placing album track, but was also our least polarizing song overall (an album track to boot!). This has always been my favorite track from the album for as long as I can remember, so in turn I wasn't at all surprised to see it be well-received from everyone. This in fact was an early #1 contender as it initially picked up a top 3 from myself followed by a #1 ranking from Kanenrá:ke. It still maintained its status as a top 3 contender for the remainder of its run as the entire group put this either in their top 5 or just outside of that. As for myself, I'm a longtime fan of Don Williams and will forever remain partial to his original version. Alan of course delivered a great cover, but I do have to say that I do find myself a bit burned out from it because of the amount of recurrent airplay it still receives to this day. I just as easily could've put either one of these two songs in my top 2 as they're rather interchangeable.

Thanks again to all of the participants and those that followed along with me! Since the holidays are upon us, I've decided to hold off on announcing the next two albums until sometime after Christmas. Just to recap, the albums remaining include Everything I Love, When Somebody Loves You, Drive, Like Red on a Rose, and of course his latest release Where Have You Gone. I'm still debating on whether or not to include The Bluegrass Album in the series, but that'll just depend on the level of interest from the group. As for what albums will be next, the only hint I'll give is that they'll both be due sometime around Valentine's Day . Until then, Happy Holidays everyone!

I never knew Crystal Gayle had been the first to record "Right In The Palm Of Your Hand"! Such a nice version!
"Kiss An Angel Good Mornin'" is one of my favorites from Charley and Alan did the song real justice. I used to think this was a single from Alan but I guess my family just played that one a lot!
"Pop A Top" is fun and I'm glad it was a single because it made me seek out Jim Ed's version which was my introduction to him!
"She Just Started Liking Cheatin' Songs" is one of the songs here that I think Alan was able to improve on the original! I still enjoy John's but I'll take AJ's every time.
I have a younger cousin I work with who's just recently starting to explore older country music and when I was driving him home from work SJSLCS came on and he was so taken by it. He came in the next week having listened to the entire album!
"It Must Be Love" feels timeless to me, it's not my favorite on the album but I still love to hear this one whenever it comes on!
This album was such a corner stone one for me at 9/10 years old, lead to a lot of my love for older country :)
