“Wishful Drinkin'” was about as close of a top 5 contender as any of the songs that did make it in, but unfortunately in the end it just couldn't quite overtake the couple of songs out ahead of it. As I mentioned in a previous post, it has been a rare occurrence to see much consensus amongst the group overall with this song being one of the outliers. Only two participants placed this outside of their top 15 with .indulgecountry giving this its lone bottom 5. The majority ended up ranking this in their top 10 with the bulk of those being top 5s. That included a pair of top 2s from George Strait Junkie and Cody Wants Out.... I thought this was one of the stronger album tracks going into this, so I wasn't too surprised to see it perform well across the board as this is the kind of song that would've done well for Alan at country radio back in the day.

I heavily considered "Wishful Drinkin'" for my #1 spot; one of my favorite discoveries for this album.

Good Sunday morning to y'all! I'm going to go ahead and wrap things up here so that I then can turn my focus onto finalizing the list for the upcoming album tracks rankdown. As for the top 5, the first two songs are separated by only a mere point with both of them garnering a #1 ranking. Almost thirty points separate those two songs from the top 3, however!

The title track is the first song to make its exit just as we enter the top 5. This clocks in as the second most polarizing song from the album which likely doesn't come as much of a surprise to most. That said, this actually only picked up three bottom 5 rankings with the majority of the group in fact ranking this at or very near their top 5. gardyfan is the next to depart with his top-ranked song while Kris Kringle loses his runner-up.

It was a photo-finish between this and the title track with both songs being separated by only a mere point. While this did pick up a pair of bottom 5 rankings from taylor is terrified and George Strait Junkie, the majority of the group yet again ranked this somewhere within their top 10 with four of those being top 5s. That included a pair of top 3s from gardyfan and castleoblivion26 as well as a #1 ranking from Darkest Hour. “You'll Always Be My Baby” was written by Alan for his daughter Mattie's wedding who unfortunately lost her husband, Ben, to a tragic accident out on the lake less than a year before their anniversary.

Separated by almost thirty points from the previous two songs, “Things That Matter” bows out next of which it missed the top 2 by only two points. All but two participants ranked this outside of their top 10 which makes this the third least polarizing song from the album. This also remained within the top 5 for its entire run over the course of the rankdown as it picked up a handful of rankings there as well. That included a #1 ranking from Kanenrá:ke as well as a runner-up spot from someguy. This was one of the few songs from the album not to be penned by Alan himself as it was in fact co-written by his longtime producer Keith Stegall.

4 vs 5.
The Older I Get may get it due to familiarity bias and by being slightly better.

There really was very little competition for the top 2 as both of our finishers held the reins onto those spots for the entirety of the rankdown. In the end, though, "The Older I Get" proved almost invincible as it finished out ahead by over thirty points! All but one participant ranked this outside of their top 5 with myself, castleoblivion26, and taylor is terrified placing this at the top of our lists. "The Boot" held its own, though, as it too picked up the majority of its rankings from within the top 10 with both George Strait Junkie and Cody Wants Out... putting this as their #1 song. Considering that "The Older I Get" was released back in late 2017, it coming out ahead by as much as it did is likely due in part to its familiarity. I myself went back and forth as to which song to put atop my list as I just as easily could've ranked "The Boot" there as well. Therefore, both songs are winners of this album in my eyes! It's worth noting that not only was "Things That Matter" not written by Alan, but both songs to make the top 2 were also not penned by him with "The Older I Get" being co-written by Hailey Whitters.

It's worth noting that not only was "Things That Matter" not written by Alan, but both songs to make the top 2 were also not penned by him with "The Older I Get" being co-written by Hailey Whitters. Time for him to go to the common mainstream country artist route and feature outsider cuts only /s

I'd like to thank everyone for following along with and participating in the album series as it has been a labor of love hosting this. It's almost hard to believe that it has already been a year and half since we jumped into this, but I have thoroughly enjoyed revisiting Alan's discography and listening to his songs from a bit of an older (and hopefully wiser!) perspective. Alan truly is one of country music's greatest songwriters of our time of which he isn't truly given enough credit for. As for the album series, I am currently working on finalizing the playlist for that and I hope to launch it sometime very soon. My only dilemma is if I should do two separate rankdowns divided by the decades or to keep it as one. I'd certainly welcome any input y'all might have and if you'd prefer to keep it as one rankdown or two, so please make sure to share your thoughts on that with me! Again, thanks everyone and YEE HAW!
