Late update on the Global 200 because it was finals week and there wasn't much news but here we go! docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- There actually is a new peak this week, the first in a while. Lebanon makes a solid return back to the global charts after almost a year of absence, and it's through Lebanese singer Myriam Fares's appearance on "Tukoh Taka" one of the official anthems for the World Cup. This makes a low debut on the main chart, but it smashes on the Excl. US chart. Debuting at #75 is more than enough to take the title of biggest Lebanese song ever on that chart from RealestK, who got to #133 last year with viral hit "WFM" (another "Talking to the Moon" sampler). - And now some December 3rd specifics. • More World Cup boosts: South Africa makes it back onto the charts this week through Freshlyground. They were featured on Shakira's "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" back in 2010, and that song experiences a big resurgence this week for obvious reasons. • One last soccer thingy: "Dreamers" by Jungkook debuts in the top ten, putting the title of biggest Korean song back in the hands of a BTS member. Sadly, the featured Qatari singer Fahad Al Kubaisi isn't credited on the track, so Qatar misses its Global 200 debut. • Somehow, Pnau returned... Australia is showing some weakness that it's never shown in the past. Because of all the current hits falling down, especially being pushed down by Christmas music, Pnau's credit on "Cold Heart" actually returns to making them the biggest Australians on the chart in what has to be one of the longest gaps for a single song to ever hold the crown for its country. • Brazil has a new smash, with "Evoque Prata" getting a huge boost on both charts this week and leaving "Eu Gosto Assim" in the dust.

I'm sure there's not much point in continuing these global chart updates during December, but I might as well do it for fun. Nothing close to a new peak for any country this week, so let's just talk about the Christmas takeover! docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- The United States, Australia, and Wales have been lost to Christmas already. "All I Want for Christmas Is You" returns to the top of the main chart this time, taking the American spot away from Taylor Swift. The lack of Australian hits that I talked about last week really bites them now, as "Snowman" by Sia easily conquers all to become the biggest Australian song in the world. Meanwhile, Coldplay's lack of active hits lets Welsh singer Shakin' Stevens take the spot away from Jonny Buckland with his old ditty "Merry Christmas Everyone" this week. - Scotland is falling prey to the Christmas freeze in a different way. As all current hits are drowned out by the snowstorm, "Someone You Loved" by Lewis Capaldi returns by default to the top of the Scottish list, its first time in that position since "Wellerman" all that time ago. - India has actual news, so congrats to them. They get a rare representation by a rapper as "Maan Meri Jaan" by King debuts on the Excl. US chart this week.

No new peaks on this update, of course, but a lot of countries get taken over by new songs this week on the Global 200! docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- "All I Want for Christmas Is You" returns to the top spot on the Excl. US chart, taking the American crown from Taylor Swift, which is an accomplishment from two weeks ago on the main chart. - In the same vein, "Last Christmas" returns to its previous peak of #2 on both charts, which drops Sam Smith from being the biggest Brit on a hit right now. - Metro Boomin's new album does shockingly well worldwide, and that means the Canadian featured on the big single, the Weeknd on "Creepin'," becomes the biggest Canadian in the world, knocking Drake down a peg. - Just like the last two years, Puerto Rico falls to perennial Spanish Christmas classic, "Feliz Navidad" by José Feliciano. This is only true on the main chart this week, though. A new single by Arcángel and Bad Bunny debuts higher on the Excl. US chart. - Something else only affected on the main chart: Korea. "Dreamers" holds strong on the Excl. US chart, but the biggest song off RM's solo album, "Wild Flower" with Youjeen, easily takes the higher spot on the main one. - Another country that will never stand a chance in December is Japan. "Kick Back" falls off hard, so (again only on the main chart, Higedan holds on Excl. US) "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" by the Plastic Ono Band now once again has the title of biggest Japanese song in the world due to Yoko Ono. - And the only other non-Christmas news is Turkey's return to the charts, with a big streaming hit in "Antidepresan."

On this episode of Global 200 updates, I rectify a big mistake and Christmas takes over hard enough to make me wonder... docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- I'm gonna say this isn't fully my fault since this group is so new to the scene that there wasn't a lot of information before now, but I'm sadly gonna retract counting NewJeans for Vietnam on my chart. Their new single "Ditto" pulled some huge global numbers that even let it break through some of the Christmas iceberg, and I was going to count it as a new peak for Vietnam on the charts because of Vietnamese member Hanni. However, I decided to doublecheck and found some new info revealing she grew up entirely in Australia and just has a Vietnamese background. I'm quite stringent on my chart being a nationality chart, not any other vague definitions of culture or origin. This is why Joji counts for Japan, for example, despite most of his popularity happening from activity in the United States; he grew up there. So for that reason, I'm rolling back Vietnam's stats to no longer appearing on the main chart and being represented by "Muộn rồi mà sao còn" by Sơn Tùng M-TP on the Excl. US chart. But hey, NewJeans is still able to own the title of biggest Korean song in the world several times over this week because of the other four Korean members! - And now December 31st specifics. Happy New Year! • It took longer than usual this year, but "It's Beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas" by Michael Bublé has finally overtook all threats from Drake and the Weeknd to be the biggest Canadian song in the world on both charts. • Even compared to other current hits, it seems Bizarrap and Quevedo's Bzrp Music Sessions smash hit is finally beginning its descent. "Despechá" by Rosalía hops over it to take the biggest Spaniard title this week. • Because of a remix with some Argentines, "Marisola" by Cris MJ featuring Standly puts Chile back on the charts. • Coldplay's Guy Berryman is back to ruling Scotland, this time with the band's perennial "Christmas Lights" hit.

And now it's really 2023! Welcome to the first update from Khan on the Global 200 of the whole year. This is the fourth year that the chart exists in, will that mean less records broken as everything settles into place, or will it be such an exciting year as the others? One thing I do know is that this update isn't very exciting. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- The first bit of news is very similar to one from a couple weeks ago... This week saw the yearly return of "Mary's Boy Child / Oh My Lord" by Boney M., which is a Christmas song obscure in the states but popular in Europe, on the Excl. US chart. Boney M. has charted before, with that "Rasputin" remix in 2021, and that meant the addition of Montserrat and Aruba to my countries list. Two members of the mostly German band are from these dependent territories of the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, respectively, but it was a Puerto Rico situation where they've got enough autonomy and cultural separation that they get allowed into the bottom section of my sheet. As it turns out, the woman from Montserrat, Maizie Williams, was not only raised in the UK pretty much immediately after being born there, she doesn't even sing on the song. If I don't count J. Cole for Germany, then Maizie Williams shouldn't count for Montserrat, so the island's been removed from the sheets. Luckily, Aruba represented by singer Bobby Farrell is still there on both sheets. - And now for more normal January 7th specifics. • Looks like the boost for "Despechá" really was just remix related, and Quevedo easily becomes the highest artist from Spain again on the charts. • Even with the biggest possible wall of Christmas music in front of it, Brazil actually makes a return to the main chart with our old friends Israel & Rodolffo and Ana Castela, so this should do very well next week when Christmas sublimates. Time for the Christmas roundup! Which nations were conquered, brought to their knees and annexed by the invading army known as Christmas? As in, who had current hits stifled on my sheet because of a Christmas song charting higher? - The USA, obviously, didn't stand a chance. They're ruled by multiple Christmas songs like AIWFCIY and RATCT. This stopped SZA and Metro Boomin from having the biggest American songs in the world, and I don't know how great their chances are post-Christmas to rise back up. - The UK is the twin here, with Last Christmas not even letting the British-led Unholy breathe. Luckily, Unholy's already gotten some frames at the top. - Australia saw a BIG boost to Christmas this year. "Snowman" by Sia has never done this well on the Global 200 before, but now it kicked away all other current Australian hits weeks ago. Definitely one of the most improved performances for a Christmas song this year. So far, it's only blocked NewJeans, with one Australian member, from holding the Australian crown, but that song's performance should easily snatch it next week. - The same goes for Puerto Rico. "Feliz Navidad" has relly gripped that top spot hard, but "Gato de Noche" just debuted and might hold long enough to get a week on top next time. It actually didn't block "La Jumpa" believe it or not. - Canada suffered its usual fate, with Michael Bublé claiming its top spot at the end. Luckily, the Weeknd's new hit was able to hold that spot just barely in advance. - Japan held out for a while on the Excl. US chart, but it fell this finaly week to "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" with Yoko Ono. It only blocked "Subtitle" and "Kick Back" which were on top before and should be back in January.

With Christmas receding, I have one of the largest updates I've ever had to write for my weekly Global 200 updates, so let's get right to it! docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- The biggest news of all is truly exciting: We have a new chart-topping nation! It's only on the Excl. US chart, but Nigera finally has a #1 to its name after having a super strong showing for two years now. In this case, the remix of Nigerian singer Rema's "Calm Down" with Selena Gomez leapfrogs the old #2 peak of "Love Nwantiti (Ah Ah Ah)" by CKay. CKay still holds the all-time peak in the same place on the main chart, as Rema only charts at #4 there this week. "Calm Down" actually would have accomplished this a couple weeks ago if not for Christmas, so the timing is pretty lucky. This isn't just a win for Nigeria, but Rema becomes the first African to hold the #1 spot ever on these global charts. - Not a new peak, but every chart-topper deserves a mention. The United States now has yet another one under its belt, as Mariah Carey dropping a hundred and fifty spots allows "Kill Bill" by SZA rises to the top spot on the main chart. - Time for January 14th to have the most long-winded week-specific news ever as I gotta say all the nations that reclaim their titles over Christmas. • First, here's all the nations that return to their current hits as the Christmas songs vanish in a flash. The UK belongs to Sam Smith again with Wham! leaving, Canada belongs to the Weeknd again with Michael Bublé leaving, Australia finally belongs to NewJeans with Sia leaving, Puerto Rico belongs to Bad Bunny again with José Feliciano leaving, Japan belongs to Kenshi Yonezu again (or Official Hige Dandism on the Excl. US chart) with Yoko Ono leaving, Scotland somehow belongs to Lewis Capaldi again with Coldplay's Christmas hit leaving, and Wales rounds things out by returning to being ruled a non-Christmas old Coldplay hit. • Now for the countries that were just being smothered out of charting at all with the massive wave of Christmas holding them down. India makes a rare return to the main chart with their new streaming smash "Maan Meri Jaan" by King. Norway, Ireland, Sweden, and the Philippines all come back with some old favorites by A-ha, Hozier, Avicii, and the Black Eyed Peas, respectively. Jamaica does the same on the Excl. US through Sean Paul's feature on the "Cheap Thrills" remix. • And finally, there are some countries whose top songs return to the charts only temporarily as they were already on their way out anyway and Christmas just expedited the process. This would be Belgium, Cuba, Kazakhstan, and Russia showing up with last year's hits by Lost Frequencies, Camila Cabello, Imanbek, and Byor, of course. • I only do all of this to point out that, this holiday season, a whopping TWENTY nations were screwed out of stats on my sheet by the Christmas onslaught! Gotta be a new record... • The one normal piece of news is that Grupo Frontera take the Mexican crown from themselves with their new Fuerza Regida collab debuting high this week.

No new national peaks on this episode of Global 200 updates, and I can't blame it on Christmas anymore. I think we've reached the point where the chart is old enough that all the countries that can rack up hits have been settled into place, and now we just have to wait for some fluke successes from smaller states. Luckily, there's still some interesting January 21st specific news! docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- As I'm sure everyone expected, considering the records it broke, the fifty-third volume of Bizarrap's Bzrp Music Sessions series, the newsworthy Shakira collab, has taken the weekly crown away from Argentina and Colombia with ONE DAY of tracking. It would probably easily shoot up to the top spot next week if not for a certain American breaking even more records. For now, this ends the long-running reign of Manuel Turizo on top of Colombia, but it only extends Bizarrap's rule of Argentina. - It was bound to happen in this day and age, but Marília Mendonça's first posthumous EP has been released to immediate success in Brazil. The lead single "Leão" handily debuts higher than any other Brazilian song on both charts, giving her Brazil's crown for the third time since her death. - And finally, there's a lot of matching between both charts happening this week. SZA rises above Bebe Rexha on the Excl. US chart, making her the biggest American on both now. Grupo Frontera was already the highest Mexican artist on both charts, but now "Bebé Dame" hops over "No Se Va" on the Excl. US chart, which it already did a few weeks ago on the main chart. Then there's Lewis Capaldi, who also achieves the rare distinction this week of having the highest ranking song from a country on both charts, but with different songs on either. On the main chart, "Someone You Loved" reigns supreme for Scotland, while his new single "Pointless" does the same on the Excl. US chart.

This week on Global 200 updates, we have a new nation to introduce! And probably one no one expect to see this week. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- You can really feel the effect of Spotify or YouTube autoplay in this week's chart. The two enormous smash singles from Miley Cyrus and Shakira have spread out to other songs in their discography. First of all, this lets the USA notch another #1 under it belt. Miley Cyrus's other former hits like "Nothing Breaks like a Heart" get to return to the chart from residual "Flowers" streams, and the same is true for Shakira. This is a lucky break for Haiti, as "Hips Don't Lie" featuring Wyclef Jean debuts near the bottom of both charts this week! The Haitian rapper on Shakira's arguable biggest hit is the first debut from his country on the global charts. - And now January 28th specifics. • Another Caribbean nation, Jamaica, is back onto the charts because of a Sam Smith song, where Jamaican singer Koffee features. • The top twenty of the main chart now contains a Bad Bunny-less Mexican for the first time in over a year, courtesy of Fuerza Regida. • In the same vein, Marília Mendonça's new song brings Brazil up to never before seen Anitta-less heights, and this time I mean both charts. • The top five of both charts finally has no British people for the first time in who knows how long.

There's surprisingly little movement on this episode of Global 200 updates, but at least we have an exciting new country to talk about. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- Africa is shaping up to have even more of a banger year than last year! Not only was a Nigerian singer #1 on the Excl. US chart a few weeks ago, another Nigerian artist graces us with a new nation on the chart. "Rush" by Ayra Starr debuts at #188 on the main chart and #418 on the Excl. US chart, and Ayra Starr herself was born in Benin and raised between there and neighboring Nigeria. This means she brings the little West African nation of Benin onto the charts for the first time ever. - And now the few bits of February 4th specific news. • Looks like I made a teeny mistake last week! On the Excl. US chart, the reign that Sam Smith has had over the United Kingdom all winter (Christmas notwithstanding) has finally shown its cracks, as "Escapism" by English singer Raye overtook it last week, a statistic it holds for this frame. • Twice's new English single makes some waves, as usual for them. The huge group's Taiwanese member means the song pretty easily brings Taiwan back onto the chart. On the other hand, their three Japanese members means the song wrests Japan's crown from Kenshi Yonezu's hands. • Italy has some shakeups due to Måneskin's new album. The boot's been absent from the main chart for a while now, but "The Loneliest" sneaks itself and its nation back on this week. More notably, Måneskin takes the Italian crown from Meduza on the Excl. US chart this week because of the very same song rising above.

I don't have a cool intro for this week's Global 200 update. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- Benin rises! After debuting at #188 (#148 on the Excl. US chart) last week due to Ayra Starr, Benin reaches a new peak because of the song's continued growth. It can now claim to be as high as #165 on the main chart and #123 on the Excl. US chart. - That's the only new peak, so here's the February 11th specifics. • NewJeans joins the elite group of acts to replace themselves for leaders of a country on the global charts. This week, "OMG" hops above the season-long-reigning "Ditto" to rule both South Korea and Australia. • Another reign from last year completes this week, as "La Jumpa" loses Puerto Rico to "Yandel 150" by Yandel and Feid this week on both charts. • On the Excl. US chart, a couple of one-week leaders are, as expected, dethroned when the new release hype dies down. This would be the return of Italy to "Bad Memories" with Meduza as "The Loneliest" falls off and the return of Japan to "Kick Back" as "Moonlight Sunrise" falls down. The opposite happens to the UK this week, where the album hype for "Unholy" gets Sam Smith to rise over Raye on "Escapism" for the week.

Valentine's Day (almost) update on the Global 200 docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- I'm probably the only one who thinks "Rush" by Ayra Starr is one of the more exciting songs rising up the charts right now, but that's what I get for running this spreadsheet. Because of that song, Benin has claimed more peaks on the chart! Not only does it climb to a new high of #137 from its previous #165 on the main chart, the nation more excitingly enters the top half of the Excl. US chart for the first time ever at exactly #100, up from its previous high there of #123. - And that leaves us with just some February 18th specific news. • "Zona de Perigo" by Leo Santana displays a debut that's just as impressive, if not more, as the recent out-the-gate smash "Leão" by Marília Mendonça had. This puts Leo Santana squarely ahead of her to rule Brazil on both charts. • Twice's last single collapses hard this week, so Kenshi Yonezu is back up to leading Japan on the main chart. • Hands change for Mexico on only the Excl. US chart this week, but momentum's looking like the same thing will happen next week on the main chart. "Bebé Dame" by Fuerza Regida and Grupo Frontera loses to "AMG" by Natanael Cano, Peso Pluma, and Gabito Ballesteros in an impressive feat for regional Mexican music (considering how high up on the charts this is happening) that the global charts have rarely seen before.

Another update on the Global 200 from Khan! docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- Starting with the usual new peak news, Benin rises again. Ayra Starr is bringing Benin slowly but surely upwards, this time moving the nation's peak from #137 to #127 on the main chart and from #100 to #89 on the Excl. US chart. - And now the usual February 25th specifics. • On the main chart only, the British title is snatched away from Sam Smith for what might be the last time. At least when it comes to "Unholy" because British singer PinkPantheress's new hit looks here to stay based on streaming numbers. • As I'm sure everyone expected, the Barbadian crown shifts songs but not hands. For this week, "Umbrella" debuts above "Lift Me Up" on the main chart due to that Super Bowl halftime show performance. Since the rest of the world doesn't care about football, "Lift Me Up" stays the leader on the Excl. US chart. • But this is NOT the case for Scotland! Also due to the Super Bowl, "We Found Love" by Rihanna and Calvin Harris debuts modestly on both charts, overtaking Lewis Capaldi for Scotland, for this week, on both counts. • It's officially the real Eurovision season again! Even with last year's viral ESC hit still charting. Last week was the Sanremo Music Festival, the big contest Italy holds to determine which song they'll be sending to Eurovision. A lot of countries do that, but Italy's is always the biggest, and it shows with a handful of high-placing songs from the contest debuting on the charts. Oddly, it's the song that came in second place, "Cenere" by Lazza, that debuts the highest and represents Italy on the charts this week. On the Excl. US chart, this means Meduza has to hand over the crown for now.

Tiiiiiime for the latest Global 200 update! docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- First our obligatory weekly Benin segment. "Rush" by Ayra Starr isn't rising as fast anymore, but is still rising, securing new Beninese peaks of #122 (from #127) on the main chart and #88 (from #89) on the Excl. US chart. - And now the March 4th specifics. God, it's already March? • Irish singer Niall Horan has released a lead single to his new album that's been very positively received. Since the Irish representation on the charts has been relegated to decent recurrent streams for Hozier's old hit at the bottom of the rankings, Niall Horan is easily able to secure "Heaven" a spot as leader of the Irish on debut week, a spot he'll hold for a while, looking at the numbers. • Barbados returns its weekly crown from Rihanna's Super Bowl-boosted song to her current hit "Lift Me Up" but this is only on the main chart. On the Excl. US chart, against all odds, "We Found Love" actually rises. Since the Super Bowl is a very American thing, "Lift Me Up" was actually able to hold onto its spot as the highest Barbadian song last week, Super Bowl week, but it loses out this week. Very unexpected behavior, imo.

This week of Global 200 updates, Karol G's album really shakes things up! docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- Colombia obviously has a huge week due to Karol G's album bomb, including a #1 debut with "TQG" with fellow Colombian Shakira that notches the country its second chart topper on both global charts. On the main chart, Colombia hit #1 previously through some of the "We Don't Talk About Bruno" singers, but on the Excl. US chart, Colombia's only previous week at #1 was the very first week of the chart's existence, when "Hawái" by Maluma ruled. They are now the first South American country to achieve multiple #1 hits. - More modest but no less exciting is Benin, whose current rising hit continues to, well, rise. "Rush" by Ayra Starr stays still on the Excl. US chart, but it hops up to #115 from #122 on the main chart this week, giving Benin a new peak there. - And now onto the many March 11th specifics. • The "Die for You" remix smashes on streaming, allowing the Weeknd to take the Canadian crown from himself and Ariana Grande to take the American crown from Miley Cyrus this week. • "Zona de Perigo" utterly crashes this week for reasons that elude me, so "Leão" by Marília Mendonça is back by default to being the biggest song from Brazil this week. • "We Found Love" is finally losing its steam, so Lewis Capaldi is able to retake the Scottish leadership from Calvin Harris this week. • Karol G's album bomb brings some absent countries back from the dead! Ángel Dior's verse on "Ojos Ferrari" puts the Dominican Republic back on the chart, while Sean Paul returns along with Jamaica due to his appearance on "Kármika" from the same album. • Now for some Excl. US chart only news. PinkPantheress has become the British leader by climbing over Sam Smith, but that already happened on the main chart. More excitingly, Indonesia's back. Singer-songwriter (and comedian, apparently) Raim Laode with his new song "Komang" debuts low on the Excl. US chart this week.

This song actually broke our national weekly stream record on Spotify. The fact that this guy started as a competitor in a stand-up comedy competition (he got to Top 4) and years later he made a hit like this is kinda amazing.

The fact that this guy started as a competitor in a stand-up comedy competition (he got to Top 4) and years later he made a hit like this is kinda amazing. Actually surprised that Komang is that low considering the previous Indonesian record holder (Hati-Hati di Jalan) got to #52. On that note, Mahalini's Sial not even charting is also surprising considering that it's not far behind Komang and also had 1m+ daily streams in Spotify

More Global 200 updates from Khan! Nothing much happened because of a certain country album... But hey, Morgan Wallen finally debuts on the Excl. US chart, that's notable. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- It's silly, but my standard format for these posts makes me point out that, on the Excl. US chart only (since the song was pushed way down on the main chart by Morgan Wallen's bomb) "Rush" by Ayra Starr moves up one spot, bringing Benin's all time peak from #88 to #87 on that chart. - And now the few March 18th specifics. • On the main chart, the hype for the "Die for You" remix fades ever so slightly, allowing Miley Cyrus to reclaim the United States from Ariana Grande. • NewJeans's long reign of South Korea, which has lasted for the entire year so far, is broken! "On the Street" by J-Hope debuts above "OMG" on the main chart this week, giving him the title for now. • The Ana Castela song "Nosso Quadro" makes a 100-rank jump this week for some reason, which allows her to easily take Brazil from the slowly fading Marília Mendonça song.

While Morgan Wallen managed to chart 34 songs in this week's Global 200, Last Night at #103 was his lone song in the Global 200 excl. US.

They didn't mention that Morgan Wallen managed to chart 35 songs in the Canadian Hot 100 this week. But otherwise, this article does a good job in explaining how US-centric Morgan Wallen's success was this week.
3/16/2023 By Eric Frankenberg
The country superstar breaks the record for the most simultaneously-charting songs on the Global 200, with 34, but notches just one song, at No. 103, on Global Excl. US.
There are 29 debuts on the March 18-dated Billboard Global 200 and 25 of those come from Morgan Wallen. The hit parade doesn’t stop there, with Wallen breaking ground among country – and all – artists on Billboard’s flagship global chart.
On top of Wallen’s 25 debuts, he adds five reentries. More, four of his tracks hold over from last week’s chart. All of that adds up to 34 placements on this week’s Global 200, more than any artist has ever simultaneously charted in the list’s two-and-a-half-year life span. Taylor Swift previously held the record, with 31 songs on the Nov. 27, 2021, list in the wake of the release of her country-pop rerecording Red (Taylor’s Version).
Wallen’s total streaming figure and record-breaking hold on the chart are unqualified triumphs for any artist and especially so for country acts. Since launching in September 2020, the Global 200 has had 125 instances of an artist charting 10 or more songs at once, but only three of those belong to a current core country artist – in each case, Wallen. He landed 19 songs on the Jan. 23, 2021-dated tally and 10 the following week. His new album, the Billboard 200-topping One Thing at a Time, sparks his latest chart haul, just as the arrival of his prior LP, Dangerous: The Double Album, yielded his big weeks on the Global 200 two years ago.
To find a full-on country act other than Wallen with a noteworthy robust one-week sum, we arrive at Luke Combs, who totaled six songs on the Nov. 7, 2020-dated Global 200. There have been 591 counts of an artist with six or more titles on the Global 200, spread among 65 distinct acts, but just 11 by two artists – 10 by Wallen and one by Combs – among country artists.
Country music has long struggled to find crossover success internationally. The genre is native to the United States, headquartered in Nashville and driven in large part by U.S.-based country radio, while often honoring authenticity above all else. That means that hometown (and in the case of these charts, home-country) pride goes a long way and could make exporting to Asia, Europe, South America and beyond difficult.
Wallen’s own chart entries perhaps prove that point. His song titles alone are specifically American, referencing Ford trucks (“F150-50”), Tennessee (“Tennessee Numbers” and “Tennessee Fan”) and the particulars of a certain baseball team’s near-championship run from 25 years ago (“’98 Braves”). Those songs, and most others from his latest album, storm the Global 200 powered by domestic streams but miss out on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart.
Of Wallen’s 34 Global 200 entries, just one appears on Global Excl. U.S., where “Last Night” debuts at No. 103. It’s his first song to ever hit that tally, and though it’s a debut worth celebrating, it’s dwarfed by the track’s No. 5 rank on this week’s Global 200 (and No. 1 status on the U.S.-based Billboard Hot 100, where Wallen achieves his first leader). Further, it’s just the second song by a country act (excluding Swift), to appear on Global Excl. U.S.. The other was Combs’ “Forever After All,” which hit No. 105 for one week before falling off, while peaking at No. 4 on the Global 200 in the first of 38 weeks on the chart.
Among songs on both of this week’s global charts, the average streaming breakdown is 25% domestic and 75% international. Wallen’s “Last Night” is all the way at one end of that spectrum, with 84% U.S., well more than three times the average and distinctly separated from even the next highest-U.S. share, Nicki Minaj’s “Red Ruby Da Sleeze,” with 65%. One Thing at a Time’s 36 songs go even further, averaging out to 88%. Hip-hop has its own noted difficulty spreading outside the U.S., making Wallen’s more extreme lack of international streaming even more stark.
Wallen’s drastically stateside lean falls in line with the near-total lack of country consumption outside the U.S., but there are small caveats. “Last Night” is on two of Billboard’s Hits of the World charts, at No. 6 on Australia Songs and No. 10 on New Zealand Songs. Oceania has historically been a friendly non-U.S. market to country acts, even supplementing Morgan’s top 10 appearance with Zach Bryan’s “Something in the Orange” at No. 23 on the former chart. Next week, Wallen will play two arena shows each in Sydney and Melbourne alongside ERNEST, HARDY and Bailey Zimmerman, before returning to North America for a supersized stadium tour.
Like Wallen, most country acts don’t play many concerts outside of North America. Australia and London have been welcoming, but barring major pop crossover stars like Swift or Shania Twain, genre artists remain focused on honing their U.S. fan bases. As the premier country superstar of the streaming era – a democratized and globalized evolution of a previously segmented music industry – Wallen’s ballooned presence on Billboard’s global charts could be the foot in the door for Bryan, Combs, Zimmerman and others to test the boundaries of international music consumption.

Won't lie, I just totally forgot to do this update on the normal day, so sorry for the lateness. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- There are no new peaks on either chart to speak of, so I'm just gonna lay out the large amount of March 25th specifics! • Mexico has a new smash hit! After debuting just a couple of weeks ago, viral sensation "Shorty Party" by Mexican rappers Cartel de Santa featuring la Kelly has shot up both global charts and is already sniffing the top twenty. This week, it simultaneously overtakes Fuerza Regida and Grupo Frontera's "Bebe Dame" on the main chart and Natanael Cano, Peso Pluma, and Gabito Ballesteros's "AMG" on the Excl. US chart to become the biggest Mexican song in the world. • Twice have released yet another EP, and that always means chart success. As usual, Taiwanese Twice member Tzuyu brings Taiwan back onto the chart this week through her presence. In addition, Japanese Twice members Momo, Sana, and Mina have crushed the previously longstanding Japanese leader, "Kick Back" by Kenshi Yonezu, with a very high debut. (Fun fact: Since "Kick Back" has been slowly falling for a long time with no competition, it could be said that fictional character Noodle of Gorillaz has been the highest Japanese artist on the chart for the last several weeks.) • Calvin Harris is back to snatch Scotland for Lewis Capaldi, but this time he might be here to stay as he does it with a new single with Ellie Goulding instead of an old Super Bowl-boosted legacy hit. • As is expected from most BTS solo songs, J-Hope's single from last week falls hard this week, meaning the Korean members of NewJeans easily retake the Korean crown for now. • This is only on the Excl. US chart, but we're seeing some more Eurovision impact as the contest steadily approaches! This week, it's "Tattoo" by Loreen, the Swedish representative, who debuts above Avicii's "Wake Me Up" and nabs the crown for Sweden.

The charts are April Fool's pranking me by giving me a boring week to cover. Hilarious! Since there's no new peaking, we just have a handful of April 1st specific news. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- Jimin unseats NewJeans with the lead single off his debut solo album, giving him the biggest Korean song in the world. This might only last a week, but with how well the second single has been performing, he's liable to replace himself for the Korean crown next time. - Hozier adds a second song to his chart tally. He's been near-perpetually leading Ireland with his old recurrent hit, but now his new single gives it a challenge. "Eat Your Young" debuts just above "Take Me to Church" on both charts, and the former is stabilizing, so we might see the two battle it out for the Irish crown over the next few weeks. (Especially now that Niall Horan's song is vanishing.) - Mexico is breaking through their breakthrough year! After a couple of impressive stints in 2022, they have started off 2023 by flooding the global charts with all sorts of songs from all sorts of artists. They nearly outdo themselves this week when "Ella Baila Sola" by Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma debuts high enough to become the second-highest peaking song by only Mexican artists ever, and the two acts easily take the Mexican crown for the week,

We finally got some new peak news on this episode of Global 200 updates! docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- To the surprise of probably few people, Mexico finally makes a breakthrough in chart position after building up its power for the past year. Way back in 2021, they blasted into the top ten with "Botella tras Botella" and never returned, until now. Aided by some online virality and a remix with the biggest rising star in the country right now, "La Bebe" by Mexican singers Yng Lvcas and Peso Pluma shoots up to #7, just beating the all-time Mexican peak of #9 set by Gera MX and Christian Nodal set so many months ago. On the Excl. US chart, it falls a bit short to nab that new peak, but it's still boosted enough to beat Eslabon Armado for biggest Mexican song of the week. - And now for the April 8th specifics. • Jimin, obviously, replaces himself for biggest Korean song in the world with a near chart topper. "Set Me Free Pt. 2" didn't even fall that hard. • One song takes the weekly crown from two counties. The rather romantic EP RR by Rosalía and Rauw Alejandro has its big single start off in the top ten of both charts. Through Rosalía, this makes her the biggest Spaniard over Quevedo, who's had that title for the better part of a year now. Through Rauw Alejandro, this takes the Puerto Rican title from Yandel. • In news that I'm sure will enrage those of you who don't like dinosaurs... on the Excl. US chart, "Boy's a Liar Pt. 2" falls enough for "As It Was" by Harry Styles to reclaim its old title of biggest British song.

We've got one of the most spare Global 200 updates ever this week. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- Only April 15th specifics, of course! • Korea continues to be a revolving door, with Jisoo of Blackpink taking the crown this week. Jimin's single from last week doesn't even fall, but Jisoo just barely debuts higher. • Austria breaks its long absence and reappears on both charts this week, time time through RAF Camora's guest appearance on German rapper Luciano's new single. • Japan switches hands between K-pop groups once more, with Rei of Ive allowing her group to claim the title over Twice this week because of "Kitsch" and its high debut. • Ireland is fully back to normal. "Eat Your Young" just couldn't hold, so the perennial Hozier hit "Take Me to Church" is now comfortably the top Irish song again. • The United Kingdom seems to be in a lull. Both top British songs on the global charts this week drop to #11, which means there is a pair of entirely British-less top tens for the first time in who knows how long.

This week on the global charts, we finally begin to see the consequences of Peso Pluma. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- Mexico wins it BIG this week, and the story is more complex than usual because it involves two different songs. Two weeks ago, Mexico got a new peak on the main chart through Yng Lvcas's "La Bebe" remix with Peso Pluma, and now this week, Peso Pluma overtakes himself for Mexico along with giving his country a new all-time peak. "Ella Baila Sola" with fellow Mexicans Eslabon Armado flies right past that previous #7 peak to an exciting #3 finish. Meanwhile, on the Excl. US chart, the old rule of "Botella tras Botella" at #4 stood until this week, when the aforementioned "La Bebe" remix zipped up to #2 and claimed the first new peak for Mexico on that chart in over a year. Considering the activity Mexican music has had in just the last few months, I feel like this may only be the start of the excitment. - And that's all for new peaks, so here are some April 22nd specifics. • Drake has a nice new debut to his name, and it's enough to take Canada from the Weeknd this week. • Jimin's "Like Crazy" holds much better than it does on the Hot 100, so he retakes South Korea's crown as Jisoo's song falls lower. • Japan is still in another phase of being outdone by K-pop groups. Ive, through Rei's presence, is able to take the Japanese title from themselves with "I Am" debuting over last week's single. • "Lift Me Up" has now fully dropped out of the chart after a run that was simultaneously longer and shorter than expected. This means recurrent hit "We Found Love" is, by default, how Rihanna holds onto the Barbadian crown this week. • Only on the Excl. US chart sadly, but we see another rare appearance of India this week. This time it's through a posthumous Sidhu Moose Wala single, which debuts low on that chart.

This week on the global charts, I get to give one of the most excited pieces of news I can possible give. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- And that news is, of course, a new country hits #1 for the first time! After a few months of building meteoric attention, the regional Mexican boom has finally arrived where it was always going. This week, "Ella Baila Sola" by Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma makes the fateful leap from #3 to #1. Eslabon Armado is actually an American band with Mexican heritage, so that's another notch in the USA's belt, but Peso Pluma, the straight up mascot of his own personal genre of Mexican music, represents Mexico in full here at the top of the charts. It's little wonder he has NINE songs currently charting, if this is what he's capable of. On the Excl. US chart, "Flowers" still holds strong, but "Ella Baila Sola" still rises up to #2, giving Mexico a rare record of two #2 hits on that chart, both with Peso Pluma. - As for April 29th news, we actually have a ton of movement and switching hands. • More Mexican dominance affects other territories. His collaboration with Grupo Frontera smashing out the gate causes Bad Bunny to take Puerto Rico's crown from Rauw Alejandro this week. • Something else that was longtime coming was Fifty Fifty's victory lap. "Cupid" has been showing incredible stability worldwide, even in English-speaking markets, and this success is finally rewarded as Jimin and Jisoo's recent singles drop low enough for Fifty Fifty to wear the South Korean crown. • Despite the impressive high jump for "I Am" in its first full tracking week, Ive just barely misses out on ruling over Japan due to the first full tracking week for "Idol" by Yosaobi happening at the time time. • Trinidad and Tobago's bimonthly return to the charts happens this week because of Nicki Minaj's new collab with Ice Spice.

Suddenly slow week for news on the global charts after the exciting last month, but we still have a new #1! docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- And that #1 is a long time coming. Despite its constant strong presence in music since the chart's debut, the territory of Puerto Rico only earns its second chart-topper ever this week. Who else but Bad Bunny? His collab with Grupo Frontera somehow launches up higher than any Un Verano Sin Ti tracks ever got, and it marks the first #1 since "Dakiti" for the American territory. Of course, this counts as a new chart-topper for the United States because they still own Puerto Rico, but it would've done that, anyway. Despite being from a city literally on the Mexican border, Grupo Frontera do still count as Texans. This is a win for Regional Mexican music, but it's not quite a win for Mexico. - And now a few li'l May 6th specifics. Wow, it's already May... • China's back on the charts, though it's through the usual suspects: a large K-pop boyband with some Chinese members. In this case, it's Jun and The8 from Seventeen who represent China with their new single debuting on the charts. • Jamaica also makes a return through a familiar face. Feid has a new collab with Sean Paul picking up steam, allowing Jamaica to come back in the bottom half of both charts.

Despite the super slow week for chart news on this week's edition of the Global 200, there is a subtle change that means big news for my specific spreadsheet! docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jSdctFcLyQl6HJYoi9Jr2OHFGkn-TBnxWVFNxMlzrto/edit?usp=sharing- The biggest country in the world receives a new all-time peak this week! China, whose local pop stars don't usually get to see success outside the country, has been represented for a while now by Ningning of Aespa, and they've shown up a few more times through other single Chinese members of K-pop bands on the lower part of the charts. This week, Aespa's "Savage" is finally dethroned for China's highest placement. Seventeen, who have Chinese members Jun and The8 in their ranks, see enough success for last week's debut "Super" to rise above "Savage" and its previous peak. On the main chart, Seventeen just beat Aespa's #39 with a #37. On the Excl. US chart, it's stronger rise to #18 that beats Aespa's old #24 peak, which also happens to give China its first ever showing in the top twenty of these charts. - And now the few bits of May 13th specific news. • Lisa of Blackpink replaces herself for Thailand's representation on the charts, as usual. This time, it's at least her as a solo artist. Her feature on fellow K-pop star Taeyang's new single "Shoong!" debuts above Blackpink's old lingering hits to become the highest Thai song on the charts. • On the Excl. US chart, the "La Bebe" remix returns to its old peak of #2, knocking down "Ella Baila Sola" for highest Mexican song on that chart. This is also a self-replacement, with Peso Pluma this time.
