"Long Story Short" really is a bop but I just couldn't rank it any higher in an album full of quality songs.

Next up is "long story short," leaving us at #9. This uptempo full of explosive guitars, strings, and crisp beats of both live and programmed drums, is one of the few songs in the folklore/evermore canon that explicitly talk about Taylor's personal life, summarizing the chaos of 2016 and proving that she has moved on from it a happier person who feels redeemed from it, saying that "long story short...I survived."

I'd definitely probably put this in my Top 10 now; this has grown on me a bit since submitting my list for this rankdown.

Taylor Swift could write Romeo and Juliet but William Shakespeare couldn't write "tolerate it."

"tolerate it" is just so gorgeous. I loved it the moment I heard it. The song, a slow-building ballad that is guided by muffled piano notes and tense synth-beats, speaks of the internal agony that the song's narrator experiences while getting ready to end the one-sided relationship with their partner, who seems not to love the narrator as much as they should. The line I gave you my temple, my mural my sky/Now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life is some of the best lyricism I've ever seen, and is certainly in the highest echelon of Taylor's career.

The fact that "cowboy like me" made it so close to the Top 5, where it deserves to be, hurts. I adore this song immensely, and it's not ever moving from my #1 spot when it comes to this record. I just love the story it tells so much. I interpret this song, an alternative country song featuring background vocals from Marcus Mumford of Munford & Sons and adorned with hushed guitars, a harmonica riff, mandolin, piano, and lap steel, to be about two male con artists (hence the title "cowboy like me") who fall in love with each other while frequenting resorts trying to impress rich beneficiaries. It's gay country music and you can't change my mind.

Luckily they both made it in!! Instead, "ivy" misses the Top 5. I'm glad for that cause I have it in my bottom 3, lol. I haven't sought this one out by itself in the time since evermore was released, and I'm pretty sure it's going to remain one of my least favorites from this record, but it HAS grown on me just a little bit. This song is another example of Taylor's once-in-a-generation lyricism and imagery though, as she uses the metaphor of ivy vines growing over a stone house to represent her deep-rooted attachment and temptation to the person the song's narrator is having an affair with.
