I'm not ever going to listen to Morgan Wallen, and I'm sure people who love his music could get their fix from a different artist (which... that's also capitalism!). Morgan will be fine with or without you, as today's Spotify numbers show. Whether you contribute to those numbers is up to you.. I can disapprove, but I can't judge too harshly. After all, I still shop on Amazon every now and then, so it's not like my conscience is clean.

I think the problem is people are consuming his music purely because he did that. People are buying it for that reason, and saying that it is only about his music is ignoring that fact.

No artist has ever scored a Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 in the weeks immediately following their Super Bowl performance. The Weeknd has two songs he could do it with.
All eyes on will be on Abel Tesfaye this weekend, as he performs at halftime of Super Bowl LV in Tampa on Sunday night (Feb. 7th). The Weeknd has not shied away from the moment of appearing on television's biggest stage, as his manager said in Billboard's recent cover story that Tesfaye put up $7 million of his own money to "make this halftime show be what he envisioned.”

The stakes may be even higher for The Weeknd than the dozens of superstars who've appeared on this stage before him, because he has the chance do something none of them ever have before: score a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in the weeks after his appearance.

In fact, The Weeknd is in the incredibly rare position of having two songs that could plausibly jump to the Hot 100's top spot following his halftime performance. Of course there's "Blinding Lights," currently the No. 3 song on the chart in its 60th week, and no stranger to the No. 1 spot -- not only did it spend four weeks there last year, but it was ranked No. 1 on the year-end Hot 100 for 2020 as well. But there's also Tesfaye's new single "Save Your Tears," in just its seventh week on the listing, which has been steadily climbing for all of 2021, and moves from No. 20 to No. 14 this week (chart dated Feb. 6), hitting a new high.



In the roughly 30-year history of the Super Bowl halftime show being a showcase for star artists to play their own hits -- dating back to New Kids on the Block's 1991 appearance at Super Bowl XXV, and established in pop culture by Michael Jackson's 1993 performance at Super Bowl XXVII -- no song has ever jumped to No. 1 on the chart following a Super Bowl halftime performance.

The closest a song has came in recent years was in 2017, when Lady Gaga's mega-ballad "Million Reasons" re-entered the chart at No. 4 -- a new peak for the song -- following Gaga's acclaimed performance at Super Bowl LI. That tied the mark set by LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It," which rebounded 9-4 on the chart in 2012 -- after having previously spent two weeks at No. 1 -- following the duo's performance of the song as part of the Madonna-headlined halftime show at Super Bowl XLVI. (Madonna's "Give Me All Your Luvin'," featuring M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj, also climbed 13-10 the same week, a new peak.)

The Black Eyed Peas also returned to the top 10 (19-9) with "The Time (Dirty Bit)" following their performance at Super Bowl XLV, while Coldplay just missed the top 10, but scored a new peak with their "Adventure of a Lifetime" single (36-13) after playing it at Super Bowl 50.

Of course, it's rare that an artist has had one current single populating the higher stretches of the Hot 100 at the time of their Super Bowl appearance, let alone two. Even though the halftime show has been a stage for music's best and biggest artists for 30 years, many of those years have featured legacy performers -- Gloria Estefan, Prince, Bruce Springsteen -- who were well removed from their days of Hot 100 dominance. It's only in the past decade that contemporary pop stars have become the default mode of halftime performer, and even then, several years (Beyoncé in 2013, Katy Perry in 2015) have featured artists who were off-cycle in their promotional schedule, without a true active hit to perform on the show.

There have been occasions where circumstances have aligned for artists to perform an active hit at the Super Bowl's halftime -- though none of them have already been as close to the Hot 100's top spot as "Blinding Lights" currently is. Travis Scott's Astroworld Hot 100-topper "Sicko Mode" was still hanging around at No. 5 on the chart in the tracking week of his featured appearance during Maroon 5's headlining set at Super Bowl LIII -- but the mutli-part song was perhaps not best showcased in snippeted sideshow form at the Super Bowl, and it merely held at No. 5 the week after. Justin Timberlake's Man of the Woods single "Filthy" was also still relatively new when it kicked off his Super Bowl LII halftime set, but the poorly received song's momentum had already sagged significantly from its No. 9 debut on the chart the month before, and was down to No. 51 the tracking week of the Super Bowl -- rebounding to just No. 34 the next week.

Certainly, no song has ever been more primed for a return to the Hot 100's top spot than "Blinding Lights," which is not only still in the chart's top five, but has endured for over a year now as one of the most universally beloved pop songs of the entire 21st century -- with ads for his upcoming performance even featuring listeners of all ages and demographics singing along to it. But "Save Your Tears" shouldn't be discounted as a contender either: It has more current momentum than "Lights," and more listeners will probably be hearing the still-relatively-new (but also highly accessible) single for the first time at the show, perhaps leading to more downloads and streams from those recently introduced who've already had their "Lights" fill.



Competition for the No. 1 spot, however, will be stiff. Of course, there's the incumbent: Olivia Rodrigo's heartbreak anthem "Drivers License," which debuted atop the chart in January and has now hung on for three weeks -- possibly four by next week -- while posting some pretty historic streaming numbers. Those have abated somewhat since its gangbusters debut, but its radio performance has picked up in the meantime, with "License" becoming just the third debut entry in the history of Billboard's Pop Airplay chart to scale the top 10 in its first three weeks.

And then there's Cardi B. You won't find Cardi on the Hot 100 currently, but the rapper's new single "Up" is scheduled to be released at midnight this Friday (Feb. 5). Considering that she's topped the Hot 100 four times in the past four years -- including her first debut atop the listing last year, with the Megan Thee Stallion-assisted "WAP" -- she has to be considered a threat to bow atop the chart whenever she releases an official new single. (She'll also be getting a minor Super Bowl showcase of her own.)

Still, with two challengers of his own, and just about the entire world's ears at his attention, you'd understand The Weeknd feeling pretty good about his chances to pull off the historic feat. In a week that was originally supposed to be all about the Grammys -- and which he likely long had reserved for extended victory lapping, before he got snubbed and the awards got postponed anyway -- it would certainly be the best consolation prize he could ask for.

I mean, there’s a reason why places like Chik-Fil-A had/have the reputation they do. There are tons of people who choose where they take their business purely because they don’t want to support these types of people.

Ultimately, there’s a difference between people who are actively seeking him out because of his racism and people who passively continue listening to the music because they simply don’t know or they’re simply casual music fans who don’t get invested in the artist or anything beyond the songs themselves. I don’t think everyone who continues listening to his songs are necessarily terrible people anymore than I think people who listen to John Lennon, Chris Brown or Phil Spector are terrible people. It all comes down to intent and clearly there’s intent by a chunk of people who are choosing to support him because of his racism.

Morgan Wallen's Airplay Collapses After Racial Slur, But His Sales Are Way Up

On Feb. 3, Wallen's radio play fell by over 70%, while sales of his music increased by 339%.
Morgan Wallen's music decreased sharply in radio airplay while surging in sales on Wednesday (Feb. 3) following his use of a racial slur on video.

As previously reported, TMZ posted a video Tuesday night of Wallen yelling expletives, including the N-word. He subsequently issued an apology, while his record label, Big Loud Records, suspended his recording contract indefinitely and radio stations rushed to remove his songs from rotation.

According to MRC Data, Wallen's radio airplay across all genres in the U.S. on Feb. 3 fell by approximately 71%, to 617 plays, from Feb. 2 when his songs drew a combined 2,100 plays. (In the previous five days of the latest tracking week, his songs received between 2,000 and 2,300 plays daily.)


The decrease reflects the decisions by iHeartMedia, the largest radio station group in the U.S., Entercom, Cumulus and other station owners to pull Wallen's music.

As the bulk of Wallen's airplay is on reporters to Billboard's Country Airplay chart, he faced a similar drop among those panelists, 74%, from Feb. 2 (1,500 plays) to Feb. 3 (389). (In the prior five days, he logged between 1,500 and 1,600 plays among Country Airplay reporters daily.)

Wallen's current country radio single, "7 Summers," dropped 70% on Country Airplay reporting stations, from 490 plays Feb. 2 to 149 Feb. 3. On the most recently published Country Airplay chart, dated Feb. 6, the song rose from No. 16 to No. 15 for a new peak (up 8% in audience reach in the tracking week ending Jan. 31).

While Wallen's radio play eroded on Feb. 3, sales of his music swelled, according to preliminary reports to MRC Data. His catalog of albums and songs sold a combined 22,500 copies in the U.S. on Feb. 3 -- an increase of 339% compared to sales on Feb. 2 (5,000).

Breaking down album vs. song sales, Wallen's albums sold a little over 8,000 copies Feb. 3, up 593% from 1,000 on Feb. 2, while his songs sold 14,000 downloads Feb. 3, up 261% from 4,000 on Feb. 2.

Wallen's current album, Dangerous: The Double Album (released Jan. 8), sold just under 7,000 copies on Feb. 3, up 511% compared to 1,000 sold Feb. 2. His previous LP, If I Know Me (released in April 2018), sold 1,500 copies Feb. 3, up 1,519% compared to a negligible sales figure Feb. 2.

Dangerous logged its third total and consecutive week at No. 1 on the latest all-genre Billboard 200 and Top Country Albums charts, dated Feb. 6 (reflecting sales and streaming activity in the week ending Jan. 28). It's the first set to have led the Billboard 200 for at least three weeks and also appeared on Top Country Albums since 2013, and the first of new material by a male artist since 2002.

As for Wallen's individual song sales, five of his tracks sold at least 1,000 downloads on Feb. 3, after none reached that level Feb. 2.

Wallen's top five-selling tracks on Feb. 3 were: "More Than My Hometown" (nearly 2,000, up 453% from Feb. 2); "Wasted on You" (nearly 2,000, up 80%); "Sand in My Boots" (a little over 1,000, up 162%); "7 Summers" (a little over 1,000, up 257%); and "Whiskey Glasses" (a little over 1,000, up 656%).

I don’t think there’s a huge amount of people buying Wallen’s music just because he said the N word. More likely they’re fans sending him a message that they will still stand by him despite his mistake.

As with all similar articles in the last five years, it's important to know that a 500% increase on minuscule sales is still minuscule sales. The relatively good hold on streaming is the bigger tell here (but I still feel publicity and curiosity played a part and it will not be enough to offset the airplay drop and the lack of promorional spots in the future).

The Wallen songs will likely stay stable for another day or two due to curiosity. I'd imagine once that drys up they will start falling due to them all being dropped from playlists/people not wanting to support a racist.

It'll be interesting to see. I'm wondering if because radio has basically dropped him cold, streaming might actually go up since that's the only way (other than buying) that people will be able to hear his songs, and those fans who think what he did isn't that bad, or don't know a lot about it (there hasn't been as much coverage as I thought there'd be) might not let what he did stop them from listening to songs they otherwise enjoy. But there could also be a sharp dropoff as word of what he did spreads and the curiosity factor subsides. We'll see soon enough!

It definitely is! willow's doing almost 100k more daily streams on Spotify than cardigan did almost two months after folklore dropped, it's also rising (slowly but still) on the radio. In its 7th week cardigan was already out of BB100's top 50, and willow is #28.

I have to assume radio and playlist curators were expecting a widespread consumer revolt, which would have made it a no brainer to go ahead and strip his songs from rotation. This doesn't seem to be a big deal outside of niche internet spaces though. There's still a lot of uncertainty here, but I think it's safe to say he has lost very little in terms of his fanbase, so whether or not his career is successful from here seems to depend on whether or not the industry wants to keep up their "principled stance" in spite of the money being lost. I guess that's the reason why his label suspended his recording contract rather than dropping him, they wanted to wait and see if the backlash would be enough to tank his career.
