I like this more than anything new from them in years. I don’t see it as chasing trends because they’ve always been inspired by 80’s music and synth pop (“Talk” anyone?). If anything it’s convenient for them that this type of music is in right now; because it’s one of their lanes anyway. I get that it’s more intentionally pop, but after a Chainsmokers duet this one is hardly extreme.

Agreed, not to mention a chunk of MX had the same vibe. (This is very Teardrop/Hurts Like Heaven)

#1 on iTunes this morning.
For reference, “Orphans” peaked at #27.

I like this on first listen, but the chorus does all the heavy lifting. The verses are just kind of there and then boom, here comes the gold chorus.

I don't really see this as trend chasing either, and this kind of sound doesn't feel like it should have an age limit to it. If you want music where the artist sounds too old for the music, go listen to Fitz's new album.

On my first few listens, this is alright. I think it'll grow on me more with repeated listens.

This is surprisingly good. And even if they are hopping on a trend, it's one that makes sense for them, and certainly a sound I'll take any day over the EDM sounds they were dabbling in before.

First off.. you are only old if you are old at heart.
WOW! For being born in the "head" this is pretty great. Love the return to 80's percussion. More and more these bands are turning to the power of melody. I can't praise that enough. Been eons since I charted this band. That is all about to change. Download/check.

Very happy to be proven wrong as far as them getting phased out after “Champion of the World”. I have been listening to this regularly & plan to do so for awhile!

I don't think it's really a radical departure for them musically. It sounds pretty similar to "Hurts Like Heaven", in my opinion.
Really strong single - but will there be dramatic tumble by week 15 and will they be able to generate a sizeable enough second single? That really remains to be seen after a disappointing showing last time around.
I'll eat my hat (and then some) if a band well into their third decade and now over 40 can cross into CHR territory but you never know.

Chris had also crossed 40 when “Something Just Like This” dropped.
Weezer’s guys were up there with “Africa”.
Pop radio also still adores Maroon 5.
Anything is possible.

Those Alt spins include only one full weekday of airplay. This is going to overtake Billie at this rate and be in the top 10 by the end of the week. Wow.

It's that good. It fits the moment well. Summer + less COVID concerns = fun hits. Let's go!

Strong Billboard debuts on both Alternative & HAC this week!
Alt #22 HAC #28 (where “Orphans” peaked, for reference)
This has me super optimistic for their inevitable comeback.

If you've been reading my posts over the years, you'll know my feeling about Coldplay as a whole is that they're extremely overrated. I do like some of their songs a decent amount, but most I can take or leave. I never understood the hype over 20+ years about their fame.
I do really like the whole upbeat and synthy/dance-pop vibe this song. That alone makes this one of my favorites of theirs in awhile. However, Chris's vocals is typically my problem with the band as a whole. They just don't seem very interesting and energetic to keep me coming back often. I will listen to this on regular repeat though being that it's an overall pretty good tune.

I don't like this one. Idk, I just don't think that Chris Martin sounds great over this type of instrumental and the chorus itself just falls totally flat. The aesthetic is nice but the song itself doesn't do too much

This is their best and most radio-friendly single since “Every Teardrop” in my opinion, arguably their most radio friendly single to debut a new album ever.
Expect this to be massive on Alt, AAA, Hot AC, and maybe their highest peak on POP without the Chainsmokers (wow, forgot about that whole thing) in 10+ years.
Come to think about it, only song I have liked of theirs in 10 years. GFT
