I've been meaning to ask? What is that whole Extraterrestrial Transmission about. Is it just some cool promo gimmick or are these guys tripping?

I thought the "Extraterrestrial Transmission" was the official music video? Guess not. Seems like a waste of money to make basically two music videos for the same song, but what do I know

Had a feeling transmission was not the music video since the title said Official AUDIO, not Official VIDEO
With regards to multiple music videos, Lewis Capaldi and Cleopatrick have done this approach once their singles got bigger later in their run.

I still don't understand why they wanted to send this song to ETs?

I am in absolute disbelief that this song looks to be just about done peaking in Alternative as i honestly though it would be another easy #1 for them but instead this has clearly hit a brick wall, It really is surprising that "Orphans" was able to get to #1 on Alternative radio and yet this song which has streamed much better missed the Top 5 entirely.

Even though I’m not as qualified to speak on it as macattack or the like, I’m going to place my bet that Audacy is to blame for the crash & burn? I’m pleasantly shocked by the run this is having regardless, since it looked like Coldplay’s days as staples were coming to a screeching halt not even 2 full years ago, then this became their biggest thing since SJLT.

Even if it did hit #1, "Orphans" wasn't that big of a hit (on alt) either. Even though it did go #1, it's recurrent airplay was shit - it's last week on the chart was literally in the bottom 10 of the chart. But Audacy does play a factor because how many times a song gets played on WNYL (at night at least) will affect the other 13 (or 14 come two weeks) Audacys on the chart. So because WNYL played it less yesterday (it's not completely dropped - they played it as I typed this post) compared to last Wednesday, hence the large spin drop. We're still only 6 weeks into its run, plus the fact that Follow You, Way Less Sad (which is probably the next #1) and All My Favorite Songs won't screw off and the fact that there are no other big names besides Modest Mouse charging up now - the next big one, Lorde, only just got started, so I think I won't worry about this yet until maybe a month or two.

Orphans deserved better tbh. I would’ve taken longevity instead of the #1 for that one.

I’m pleasantly shocked by the run this is having regardless, since it looked like Coldplay’s days as staples were coming to a screeching halt not even 2 full years ago, then this became their biggest thing since SJLT. To expand on what Daryl the Beryl said, all Audacy stations run an 11-hour national program called "Alt Select" every weeknight from 7pm-6am local time. "Alt Select" is literally the WNYL playlist. If an Audacy station added a song WNYL doesn't have, it won't get spun here. Conversely, all of WNYL's adds play during "Alt Select", so even if the Audacy station hasn't added what WNYL is spinning, it gets spun anyway. 90% of the time the adds are the exact same as WNYL anyway, but that's something to keep in mind. Also, to correct Daryl, once the Detroit Audacy gets added in two weeks it'll be 14 Audacy stations on the Mediabase panel in total, not 14 + WNYL. As for what songs are a threat to "Higher Power" over the next two months I can run them down real quick. BTW, "Mike The Show Killer" is the industry nickname for WNYL's programming director who also is the format captain for Audacy Alternatives, he issues the marching orders at all Audacy Alternative stations. I'm not using his real name because... let's just say there are rumors. Anyway, here's the list for both you and Clode . I will emphasize this is my personal, informed opinion, and things can always change, and a song not on the list below could suddenly erupt and rush up the chart. 1. "Once In A Lifetime": All Time Low's follow-up to their "Monsters" megahit, it's currently having the same issues "Higher Power" has with fickle increases and decreases in spins, especially at WNYL.
2. "We Are Between": Great indie rocker by format staple Modest Mouse, it's steadily going up the chart. However, at the rate it's going it will still be two weeks or so before it will catch "Higher Power", and that's assuming "Higher Power" remains stalled out.
3. "Happy Endings": Mike Shinoda's biggest hit as a solo artist already, but much like "Higher Power" and "Once In A Lifetime" it's been beset by the same bumps and drops by Audacy stations, especially WNYL.
4. "Nowhere Generation": Rise Against is perhaps the most unlikely Alt staple to withstand the guitar-unfriendly 2010s, but they did, and "Nowhere Generation" is already their biggest Alt hit since "Satellite" back in 2012. A few Audacy stations have added this, but WNYL, the key station, is clearly reluctant to touch it.
5. "Stop Making This Hurt": There's been criticism of this gem lacking bottom end, and that might be the only thing that stops Bleachers from scoring another #1. We will see in probably about 4-6 weeks.
6. "love race": MGK's follow-up to mega-hit "My Ex's Best Friend", this song features Kellin Quinn of Sleeping With Sirens. I suspect someone at Audacy told Mike The Show Killer where Kellin Quinn is from because WNYL has sharply curtailed airplay of this song to a begrudging overnight spin 6 times a week. This may affect this song's peak, but we probably won't have a clear answer for 4-6 weeks.
7. "Sticky": The Maine have been around for a while, but this is the first time they've gotten any radio traction. "Sticky" is a catchy earworm of a powerpop/pop-punk song, but Audacy seems reluctant to touch it, with only one add so far. iHeart has gotten behind it though and that makes a top 10 a strong likelihood.
8. "Missing Piece": Vance Joy looks like he will remain an Alt staple for years to come, and it's not hard to see why on this indie-style number. It's a very likely #1, but it's probably 6-8 weeks from getting there.
9. "hollywood sucks//": KennyHoopla and Travis Barker's pop-punk banger has way more enthusiasm than "Estella//" ever did. Another likely #1 if it keeps up this torrid pace, but it's probably 6-8 weeks from getting there.
10. "Stargazing": The Neighbourhood is another Alt staple, albeit one that is more consistently Top 20 than Top 10. "Stargazing" is a viral hit, so that may give this one an intangible that their other non-"Sweater Weather" singles haven't had. We won't know this one's fate for 6-8 weeks.
11. "Saturday": Not an official single by Twenty One Pilots yet, but radio, especially Audacy, are sure treating it like it is. I suspect this will get a belated push like Five Finger Death Punch's "A Little Bit Off" did on Active last year after that song went on a similar tear with no push. If it does get sent this will be an automatic #1. I think this is the greatest threat to "Higher Power" personally.
12. "What You Say": Cold War Kids' latest is on a tear, but some of that is artificial due to being the current Audacy Pick Of The Week. It seems to be a rather reluctant choice, considering they took away one of the daily spins for the Pick and also delayed the announcement and premiere which denied this song more spins from the paneled Audacy stations. Even if this song gets a really positive reaction I don't see Audacy holding onto this, which will affect its trajectory.
13. "Making A Fire": Foo Fighters are Alt legends, and Mike The Show Killer is determined to kick them from the format for being a band of old white guys playing loud rock. This will go top 10, but without Audacy's help this won't go #1. I don't see that happening for a song that's much more up-tempo and lively than previous singles "Shame Shame" and "Waiting On A War".
14. "Solar Power": Huge threat by Lorde, who ushered in the alt-pop revolution in back in 2013. "Solar Power" is quite different from the likes of "Royals", "Team", or even "Green Light", being more similar to Vance Joy than anything else. We'll see what happens but right now it's way too early to tell what this song's destiny is.

No, I'm certain it's 15 stations after the addition. I probably forgot one then, there's this one particular Audacy station that I keep forgetting is an Audacy station.

I don't think this is gonna hit #1 here, but if this isn't stalling and plans on sticking around for a bit, I think top 3 is certainly possible.
Anyways, this is a bit late but this hit the top 40 on CHR a week or two back: 38 38 COLDPLAY Higher Power 1169 992 177 2.788
I do love this, but it's pretty wild to me that this is on the verge of being a bigger Pop hit than both "Paradise" and "Adventure of a Lifetime"

This got me thinking - and you and the board are probably the right people to ask: Has a song ever backed into #1? Meaning, did a song hit #1 with negative spins? Not remain #1, but take over #1 with negative spins?

There's probably more to those but I don't think in recent times with labels giving bigger pushes to #1, especially on the more commercial driven alternative. Bang Bang by Green Day for example really fell like a rock after hitting #1 on alternative, and it also had little recurrent airplay.

If Follow You can fuck off pretty quickly like Shy Away bizarrely has, this has a chance to go top 3 on Alt.

Based on the most recent update I think that this song might possibly still have a chance to go all the way to #1 on Alternative Radio, I mean the Top 3 have all lost Spins and so it would only make sense if this Song can make up enough ground to go all the way to the Top. Yeah I was wrong to think that this Song was done, We will really just have to wait and see if it manages to gain consistently to know for sure if it can still challenge for the #1.
