I just heard a version of this that completely cuts out Megan on a local (very anti-rap) Hot AC station. Sounded quite repetitive though, as it was just Adam's first verse repeated twice and then an instrumental third verse. Given Megan contributed so much to this song, it seems ridiculous (and honestly a little racist) to just cut everything she contributed to the song out entirely. My local HAC just cut out the rapped Megan verse, but kept the bridge. I assume most HACs do that, anyway.

Maroon 5 seems to get a pass but they always play the no-rap version of their songs (i.e. Payphone, Don't Wanna Know, Cold, Girls Like You, etc.).

What's weird is that some of the non-rap versions of recent Maroon 5 hits actually improve upon the original. Payphone replaces Wiz Khalifa's awkward verse/beat switchup with an actual bridge, Don't Wanna Know removes Kendrick's worst verse on any song (a verse so bad that it didn't even appear in the music video), and while Cardi's verse on Girls Like You is fine for what it is, that was originally a solo Maroon 5 cut from RPB, so not much is really lost when you swap it out. The only times I'd argue that a Maroon 5 guest feature felt critical to the overall structure of the song are What Lovers Do, Beautiful Mistakes, and the Rihanna collab that I keep forgetting the name of.

"If I Never See Your Face Again". Even though I do enjoy the solo version, it's amazing how much Rihanna adds to the song, and the premise really benefits under the structure of a duo. And yeah, I'd agree with you on the Maroon 5 songs where the guest verses felt inspired, and are actually highlights of their respective songs. Another addition, albeit a bit of a hot take here, is Christina Aguilera's feature on "Moves Like Jagger". I've always felt she did a great job, and added a nice element of sensuality to the song.

The only times I'd argue that a Maroon 5 guest feature felt critical to the overall structure of the song are What Lovers Do, Beautiful Mistakes, and the Rihanna collab that I keep forgetting the name of. I totally agree! I listen to the no rap version of "Payphone" exclusively. Wiz's verse seems super awkward and forced in the song when it doesn't really fit. For whatever reason, even though I'm not offended by swearing, the clean version of the song just sounds a lot better to me. Honestly, without Wiz's verse, "Payphone" feels the closest they've gotten to the Songs About Jane era since it came out. With "Don't Wanna Know," it's just kind of a mediocre song to me in general so Kendrick's verse doesn't really make it better or worse. I agree his verse is super cringey though, just like the whole song. I agree with those, though I'd also add "Moves Like Jagger" with Christina Aguilera. Possibly an unpopular opinion, but I also love Future's verse in "Cold."

KTCZ (Cities 97.1). Their playlist is honestly very white in general even without the no rap rule, with a few artists of color like John Legend and Corinne Bailey Rae being the exception. They've even skipped all The Weeknd's songs, including "Blinding Lights," despite that being #1 on Hot AC forever. Looking through their current playlist as I type this, only the following artists were artists of color: Outkast ("Hey Ya!") De La Soul (in Gorillaz' "Feel Good Inc") Pharrell Williams (in Daft Punk's "Get Lucky") Bruno Mars ("Just the Way You Are" and "Locked Out of Heaven") Prince ("1999," "Kiss" and "When Doves Cry") Corinne Bailey Rae ("Put Your Records On") That's literally it for the entire playlist. I knew it was bad, but this is actually pretty horrible.

Lost In Musical Reverie RoseColoredGirl I explicitly decided against including MLJ in that list, not because I dislike it (I agree with you both that Christina's part is a nice addition to the song), but because it didn't necessarily have to be there to make the song make sense. The band could have gotten away with a bridge by themselves, IMO. Also, I'm generally not a fan of Future at all, but I find his verse on Cold to be of his more tolerable performances. Still, it didn't need to be there, he was just restating the song's themes for a quick paycheck, which is both the worst kind of use of a guest rapper and the general industry/Maroon 5 default for those kinds of performers.

Hilarious that they have this billed as “Maroon 5 & Megan Thee Stallion” on streaming platforms, but then they ship a rapless edit to radio. Maroon 5 continues to pander to both sides of the fence and trying to be subtle about it.

I also wonder if the mixup(?) with them first releasing an alternate, shorter mix (missing an entire verse) and then taking it down to release the full version later affected streaming/sales numbers.
Also...it's been top 10 on iTunes for a week. It's currently 8.
