It would have been nice to have Cardi's verse included via the giant screen behind her during the performance.

Wooow pop radio not even giving Normani a chance to see if the performance has any effect, straight up trash between this and Duncan.

I was bored watching her performance, not that she was bad but the song is sleep inducing. I'm not surprised at its performance on Pop format, she should give it up and concentrate more on R&B, Urban and Urban AC formats if she'll release songs like Wild Side.

Also outside top 200 on Spotify.

I also need to reiterate that this is Top 100 on Apple Music which is known for its predominately Urban/Rhythmic users and is Top 20 on US Weekly YouTube chart. People need to remember that Spotify is NOT the only streaming platform out there.

My point here is that the performance did little to boost it. There's no harm letting it run it's course on URB... there's also little to no reason to not push another song ASAP.

I'm not surprised at its performance on Pop format, she should give it up and concentrate more on R&B, Urban and Urban AC formats if she'll release songs like Wild Side. I completely agree with this statement. This song is terrible. It doesnโt even feel like a completed song. Itโs so monotone. She is an excellent performer but the material is awful. She can rush out another song for pop but I really doubt she has anything good at all. Dancing with a stranger was a hit cos it was a bop. If Normani had been anyone else that song would have still been a hit. Wild side would not be top 30 if it was by a new artist. Thatโs the barometer right

If Normani had been anyone else that song would have still been a hit. Wild side would not be top 30 if it was by a new artist. Thatโs the barometer right This is a good R&B record and a nice Aaliyah interpolation. It's incredibly silky and replayable which is a feature of Normani's smooth tone and the producer's layering of her vocals. It also has character with the onomatopoeia and ending adlibs adding memeability for the social media era. It's on the downbeat side and heavily references female sexual desire which may not attract everyone, but you give yourself away with the over the top descriptor for a song that's mellow at worst (save Cardi's part which is admittedly OTT but also full of character). Commercially, this has succeeded as one of the top R&B charts songs since its release. It's also one of the only female perspectives that's remained in the top 10 besides a song called Woman :) Where Woman is a lyrical mixture between female empowerment and suggestive sweet talk, Wild Side centers female sexual pursuit and conquest. Wild Side so far has culminated at this year's VMAs which were an extension of its visually stunning music video. Normani and Lil Nas X were the best VMAs performer this year. Both choreographed by Sean Bankhead. Bigger stars like Bieber, Camila, and Ed Sheeran all gave boring, formulaic sets that only survived on the strength of their name recognition. WAP bottomed out on pop radio and it was a no. 1 hit, so a vulgar Cardi B feature on a newcomer's R&B song was always going to have a ceiling on pop.

What's your opinion about this peaking at #29 on Pop itsatravesty ? Can't you admit that it flopped on Pop? Yes it's doing great on R&B but it still flopped on Pop.

Songs don't really "flop" on radio unless you recast radio promoters and programmers as "stans" and "fans" instead of music industry personnel who work to promote music. The closest thing to a "flop" in real terms is a song that gets significant pop radio programming, to include mainstream radio deals, that performs poorly. Or a song that surveys poorly. Do you understand the difference? Wild Side is more POP(ular) than it should be given it's programming at the biggest radio format was modest. I think you're a fan of Camila. Solo Camila material usually struggles to resonate in the US despite heavy pop backing which is almost the complete opposite of Normani who lacks heavy pop media backing (Heavy radio deals and TTH like you've mentioned) despite always having more early interest when you look at Billboard.

The amount of gymnastics needed to pass off a #29 CHR peak as not a CHR flop.
I wonder if she has some collabs coming. Still sad about "If it Ain't Me"

CHR is a promotional tool, not a consumption metric. Flop would be CHR promoting a song heavily without the song being able to crack top 40 on Billboard. Can you think of any examples? What you're basically admitting is that this is a Top 14 hit without the support of pop radio directors.

This song was a much anticipated song from Normani. People waited a long time for this song. For a lead single to peak at #29 on Pop, sorry to tell you this but it's a flop on Pop.

For the record, this sentiment is why people celebrate her outperforming her group mate on the American charts ;) She always has to do more with less.

Itโs such a simplistic view to treat every song that charts on any chart the same. Thereโs so much to consider when determining whether a song did well or not. Who the artist is, how well known they are, label support, how much effort was put into a single, career trajectory, whether the single has support elsewhere, etc, etc. A #30 peak for one artist will not mean the same as a #30 peak for another artist. One could be a major flop, the other could be a huge success depending on who you are.
I donโt know enough about Normani to comment on the performance of this song on pop radio. On one hand, I do remember seeing that it had some buzz behind it when it first came out. On the other hand, it is a straight-up R&B track that makes its performance on Pop radio already an uphill battle.
With a discussion like this, it helps to remember that pop radio is one measure out of many many others in determining how well a song has done. Would anyone call a song like โWAPโ a flop because it didnโt perform well on pop radio? Iโd really hope not. That would be pure ignorance and would say more about the commenter than anything. A song can still be deemed a hit even if pop radio didnโt play it.

A song can still be deemed a hit even if pop radio didnโt play it. I agree. This song has done well even compared to a lot of songs with pop payola. I had to temper my reply before so as not to downplay Normani to a Camila fan lol. However, this is her 2nd CHR single as the first lead. She has never done an album campaign to get a consistent level of exposure. She's not the biggest artist out. Ella Mai, Summer Walker, SZA, Jhene Aiko (artists that are the same race and genre as Wild Side) all have hits that were not SUPPORTED by pop radio. Pop radio is a promotional ecosystem with its own set of biases. The pop airplay charts are more about genre and resources than they are about demand. It also smacks of ignorance to downplay R&B music charting on Pop radio. I can't tell where the insult is originating sometimes. It's a compliment to expect Normani to be the Weeknd but it's also not realistic in my view of where she's at as an artist. She's been able to create a brand that exceeds her catalog and relative fame. See: first ยถ RADIO is PROMOTION. That's the one point I'll add reiteratively. It's programmed spins which are not highly interactive. If a song was doing a lot of streams without TTH no one would say it flopped on TTH. That would be an indictment that TTH was not true to its name. Similarly if a song is popular without the support of pop radio, that's actually an indictment on pop radio. Even with promotional tools like TTH, curators can see when songs are skipped or played and their level of demand based on streaming tallies. That is not how radio works. Radio monitoring companies estimate general listenership for stations periodically without monitoring response to each song. Song callouts can guide radio playlists but we all know that radio is highly influenced by label politics.
That's why half of the songs in the top 20 of pop radio have neve been the 20 most popular songs.

I sense some jealous energy and misplaced anger.
