Im not mad, Ariana getting a no. 1 credit, because she's the main reason to push the song to the top. Without her, SYT gonna stall inside top 3. Just like Britney got her 5th no. 1 with S&M after S&M stalled insids top 3.
But as of now, imo most of Ariana's Hot 100 no. 1s seem like weaker hits (destined to be forgotten), except TUN and 7 Rings, compared to her remembered/stronger non no. 1s, like Problems, Break Free, NTLTC, GIAW, BUWYGAB.
I wonder, is there any other artists with >5 no. 1s, and most of the no. 1s seem weaker than other non no. 1s? Of course the answer is very subjective I guess

Honest to god, Blinding Lights will probably return to the top 10 next week I would consider that possibility if we weren't getting Your Power, Without You, and On Me all competing for the top 10 next week. On Me won’t reach top 10 next week because the remix was released midweek (and the song is generally below BL on Spotify US now), and I see either Up or Montero leaving the top 10 in favor of BL as both songs are bleeding rn. And obv DL will be below BL (as much as I’d hate for that to happen, but I guess DL had its run (now it’s time for Deja Vu to rise and shine)).

Cant we please let it die? You gotta ask radio that question, it's killed off every other song but has been very reluctant to do the same to BL. And Go Crazy

I wonder, is there any other artists with >5 no. 1s, and most of the no. 1s seem weaker than other non no. 1s? Of course the answer is very subjective I guess Taylor Swift comes to mind. most of her No. 1 singles, her 4 most-recent to be precise ("willow," "cardigan," "look what you made me do," "bad blood"), have underperformed or faded away quickly compared to some of her juggernaut hits that never made it to the top of the chart like "Love Story," "You Belong with Me," and "I Knew You Were Trouble." 3 of the 4 songs I mentioned fell below the Top 50 before their 20 weeks was up on the Hot 100. As for "Bad Blood," it was at #46 20 weeks after the week the remix took it to #1. On the flip side, "You Belong with Me" is her second-biggest hit on the Hot 100, "Love Story" fourth, and "I Knew You Were Trouble" fifth. (#1 is "Shake It Off" and #3 is "Blank Space.") For Ariana, iirc "positions" is now her 3rd biggest hit on the Hot 100 behind "tun" and "7 rings," so I'd say she's 50/50 so far. it doesn't surprise me that her 3 solo number-ones are the ones that are remembered: the other three don't appear on her albums, and "Stuck with U" doesn't appear on any album, so the Ariana association is considerably weaker. We shall see how this new remix holds up, though.

I mean, are we really celebrating "Save Your Tears" as Ariana´s number one? It feels rather pathetic. She was used by The Weeknd to get to the number one, in a week nobody will remember neither the remix or Ariana´s part in it. I think Billboard should change the rules once again. This is definitely not Ariana Grande´s number one... I mean you said it yourself, Weeknd used Ariana to go to number one Rregardless of whether it will be remembered or not, the fact remains: Save Your Tears was the highest selling single last week and went to number one because of Ariana. her credit is earned. What more is debatable though is the consistency with the 50%. At that point, which matters more: the math or the culture The song was bought by 18,000 people or so and was clicked on by enough people this week because they were curious about the song. I can click on a song by mistake and it counts as a stream? Again there is a difference. Yeah I may be curious about a song but HATE it. lol. BUT it counts towards the charts. Back in the day you had to put effort into things and that's why the charts seemed different. It just feels different for many that Ariana's version of the song is the biggest song of the week. Did radio even play the remix? I know it's all about "consumption" now. But people don't care about music as much anymore. Keep consuming but you probably won't remember many songs after 10 years. On a sidenote, I can't wait to hear Ari sing "Save Your Tears" in concert! Being her hit I bet she would include it it in her set list..

Yeah but those didn't hit #1 due to chart rules and other factors, including a lack of commercial release. Ariana's songs legitimately missed #1.

And yet only 3 of her #1s are for solo songs from her albums. ...and they are still #1s lmao Exactly. A number one is a number one at the end of the day. No matter how much we try to discredit it, lmao.

Wow, Circles hit #1 again after fifteen months! That song's longevity is truly astound- Hold on, my sources are telling me that it's actually a song called "Save Your Tears" that hit #1. Eh, doesn't change it, it's basically just Circles again.

Definitely affected by the chart rules of the early 00's limiting the peaks of the latter ones, and the download boom of the early 10's helped "3" and "Hold It Against Me" top the chart for a week. A lot of Elton John's are the same. His last two number one's were special event remakes of prior hits that hadn't hit number one. A lot of his 70's number ones, like "Island Girl" and "Philadelphia Freedom" and his "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" remake, are I'd say less remembered today than lower charting hits like "Your Song" or "Rocket Man" or a song which only got to number 41 - "Tiny Dancer." Speaking of Elton - is he the only artist who's hit number one twice with remakes of his own previously charted songs? I can't think of anyone else.

I always find it so weird when Billboard highlights things like “Save Your Tears” is the 4th #1 song to have the word “Save” in it or what ever. Literally, who gives a damn about random words being in song titles and how many times those words appeared at #1. The only time it matters is if there are identical song titles hitting #1 in the same year. Or if a song called “Boyfriend” hits #1 after a song called “Girlfriend” But other than that, I don’t get the fascination. You’re on a chart geek message board. Of course some of us think it’s interesting. I have no idea why I do tho. lol.

Are you simply mad that passive listening is a bigger factor now because of YouTube and streaming because if that's so: 1. For better or for worse, technology has advanced to the point we can't go back to when the "charts were different", and trying to take out these new platforms would make the charts even more innaccurate than they already are. 2. Whether you hate a song once you listen to it does not mean it shouldn't count. There are tons of hit songs that people hate, that doesn't negate some of the streams or sales they acquired. 3. SYT didn't go to number one by people simply "clicking the song out of curiosity". It went to number one on sales but it was also #2 on streaming. The remix is still in the Top 20 on Spotify so there is an audience that loves the remix. 4. The charts have always been about consumption - and usually just the platforms Billboard will allow. You want truly bullshit gatekeeping? Go back to the late-90s/early-00s when radio hits like Don't Speak, Torn, or Iris, as well as a bunch of nu-metal songs weren't bigger hits because of how the charts factored in sales and airplay, but also as to what was considered a single.

The way I look at charts now is that the Hot 100 takes into account everything but nothing on there resonates with everyone. I’ll try to explain what I mean.
Before, like in decades past, most people listened to the same songs as everyone else - give or take with account for genres or geographic location. You had regional hits and genre hits, but for the most part the main chart reflected the songs that were heard (or purchased) by the most people and generally, it was a large part of the population.
Nowadays, you don’t really have regional hits, but you still have demographic hits. Songs that appeal to particular audiences. You also don’t really have as many widespread hits either, because there are so many ways to listen to music, but also it’s so much easier to not hear what are dubbed the “biggest hits.” So where in the 60s or 70s, or even into the 2000s, you might expect the biggest hits of the day to be heard by, oh I don’t know, let’s say 80% of the population. Those were songs that were basically ever-present, they played on the radio, excerpts heard on tv, in malls, in public places, whatever.
Compare that to today, you might expect the biggest hits (that aren’t Blinding Lights and Circles) to be heard by a much smaller percentage of the population. 30%? Because these songs aren’t as ever-present. They aren’t all over the place but are more target specific in where they’re heard. So, you can have a song known by everyone in a particular demographic (let’s say, the gay population), and that song could be huge with the gays. But it barely makes a dent on the main chart because the gays make up a smaller proportion of the population so unless it ‘crosses over,’ that’s where it stays. Right now, rap and hip-hop is one of the biggest genres so naturally songs from rap and hip-hop artists that do well with rap and hip-hop fans will dominate the big chart because they have the most consumption. There could very well come a time when country music becomes a dominant format, where even if there’s little crossover to fans of other genres, country songs will be the biggest overall by default simply because they have the numbers to make them that way. It wouldn’t make non-country songs any less impactful - unless the Hot 100 is the only chart you value.
The main chart measures what it measures but it might not be what we’re looking for. That’s why other charts might be better for you depending on your tastes and what you find important.

Surprising, it is only his fourth song as lead artist in the top 40 over more than 14 years charting in the Hot 100.
