I would simply normalize audits so that NO ONE can cheat (which apparently some people tried this week). LTDO being number one is good (even though Levitating is better IMO), at least in the sense of us knowing we're getting accurate data. Hopefully this becomes a trend, so all fanbases that do this (Barbz, Army, Arianators, Swifties, Harries, and Ragers come to mind but I'm sure most fanbases do this if a small one like this has this problem). Personally I would also crack down on sales in general, but normalizing audits to get rid of things that are already cheating is a good start. Sucks for Dula's Peeps, though, but at least we can get that number one YE.

We need to start buy chart placements for Chromatica album tracks, Rose "Payola" Nylund are you in? It's for charity.

I can think of a few artists whose success has fallen off in recent years who could use some 'charity' to boost their chart placements. This could be a trend....

Well, I'll say this about Levitating's misfortune: If that's how it gets blocked this week, I'm glad people at least put in the effort to try to get it to #1. In my mind, the most embarrassing #2 peak in recent memory remains when Hotline Bling got stuck there for a week in 2015 because Drake's team decided to make the music video exclusive to Apple Music at first. Drake would have had his first solo #1 in the bag if he had also posted it to YouTube that week. Instead, we got a sixth week at #1 for The Hills before the utter dominance of Hello and Sorry over the next couple of months.

Things that make you go hmmm indeed. Starting a new charitable account for Loves who don't have enough money, why not? Most fanbases do this and there's nothing wrong with it. The biggest problem in setting something like that up is trust, though. There is nothing stopping someone from setting something up and then just keeping the money. Those running such an account needs to be dedicated and smart, too, at least for it to be effective. The BTS Army has really worked hard for a number of years to become so organized and effective. It doesn't happen overnight.

Yes, handling that kind of money would require a lot of trust, and finding trustworthy people is not an easy thing.

Let’s set up a fund so our poor American Little Monsters can buy those tracks! I’m too cheap to contribute but I can retweet it. However, i will etransfer some money to someone in the US who can buy some digital tracks to send to me.

Thanks for bringing this up. Is this the biggest song of all time yet? I keep waiting for that announcement and NADA. Think it's gonna be a few years until Billboard updates the GOAT chart but according to predictions, it's been the Biggest song of all time for a few weeks now This is also based on the assumption that the formula/multiplier doesn't change.

Views also got released as an Apple Music exclusive for a week iirc. That whole era from 2015–16 where some A-list acts thought that they could make streaming exclusives a thing was frustrating but funny. Tidal especially. even Taylor's attempt at being an Apple Music exclusive had to come to an end.

It's still #12. At some point it's gonna be huge enough that no formula changes are gonna dethrone it.

Yes, handling that kind of money would require a lot of trust, and finding trustworthy people is not an easy thing. Ultimately, this is why most fandoms end up being ineffective with organized buying.

Wasn't Taylor holding off on streaming her songs in the "1989" era, because of the belief that it would cannibalize sales? If so, then "Shake It Off" (and "Blank Space") wasn't available to stream when it was at peak popularity. Otherwise one of those two would surely be her top streamer.

Not the same situation, but this reminds me a little of the 1977 UK chart battle between Rod Stewart's "The First Cut is the Deepest"/"I Don't Want to Talk About It" and the Sex Pistols' "God Save the Queen". Stewart had been number one for a couple weeks, and the Pistols had released their song on the same week as Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee celebrating 25 years of her reign. Here's what happened there (from Wikipedia): This is also reminiscent of the "Shadow Dancing"/"Baker Street" situation from 1978, where "Baker Street" allegedly got robbed from a week at number one. From Stereogum:

Taylor only put 1989 on Spotify in 2017 (the week Katy Perry dropped Witness, iirc).

So on another note, 2020 was the year of one week #1s. Is 2021 the year of 2 week #1s? When was the last year we’ve had so many songs hit #1 for 2 weeks?
