All of these are good examples, and it's good company for any artist to be in, I would think.

As a chart watcher, the swift rise of Olivia Rodrigo is one of the most exciting things to happen in a long time. When was the last time an artist exploded onto the scene like this? She just debuted 4 months ago and already has two #1 singles with record-breaking streams and is on her way to a record-breaking streaming week for her debut. Has anyone ever become so popular so quickly? I'ma guess you're pretty young! Lol. The Jackson 5 had 4 straight #1s with their first 4 singles. Mariah Carey had 4 #1 hits with her first 4 singles in a span of less than a year, and then got a #1 with the first single from her second album. So, she had 5 #1s in a span of 14 months with the first 5 singles she released. There are others as well. That isn't to take away from Olivia as she has blown up and had great success right away, but this also isn't something truly rare either.

I'm new to this sort of thing, but wanted to get a better sense of where things stand between BTS and good 4 u. Specifically I'm really curious how Olivia's streams vs BTS's sales will affect things. I used the predictions someone posted from earlier in the thread to estimate some numbers and then plotted out the results. If BTS can hit their Dynamite benchmark (300k sales), they'll be pretty much unstoppable with 800+ points. If they're a little closer to 200k, then things get interesting - Olivia has a path to a second week at #1 if she can come close to or exceed her 1st week Driver's License streams (76.1M). Again, I don't have any experience on the prediction side of things, so I'm very curious to see where the big chart accounts estimate things are at right now.

Also, can we add 'brutal' and 'good 4 u' to the pop punk revival lately? brutal especially since as I've stated before, it's a riot grrrl song.

They just suck at streaming π ok 10k was an exaggeration. But it's still a small number of people compared to the people actually streaming Good 4 U because they like it instead of buying Butter just to manipulate the charts.

The only way sucking at streaming would be a legitimate argument is if they were trying to say that BTS fanbase is made up of people who are not technologically proficient, but it's not like BTS' fanbase is a bunch of boomers.

Not sure the first comment was necessary, but yes I'm not old enough to have lived through Jackson 5's dominance. I know all too well about Mariah's rise to fame, but Olivia had two #1 debuts in four months, the first of which immediately broke streaming records, and what looks to be a record-breaking streaming week with her album on its first week, so I would argue Olivia skyrocketed faster. I know this largely has to do with the fact that it hasn't always been possible to achieve these kinds of feats so quickly, but that still doesn't change my question about whether another artist had risen to fame this fast - once again, two #1 debuts and a #1 album in four months with both singles and albums breaking records.

And it's not like Butter has been tanking either, it's been above 1M the whole week. Even if ARMY stans weren't so bloodthirsty with sales, it would still be one of the top streamed songs on any other week...it just so happens Olivia Rodrigo is unstoppable.

At this point, I would want Maneskin - the Eurovision Song Contestβs winner of this year - to smash in the US with their winning single, in order to establish pop/punk/rock dominance again π

I don't know how often or how successful songs in foreign languages do there.

Gagaβs rise to fame happened pretty quickly too - well, I suppose once Just Dance finally took off over like half a year lol. THEN she took off quickly. Her first six songs hit number one on pop radio. Her Hot 100 performance wasnβt as impressive, but I donβt believe video streams were in play at that point and thatβs arguably where her strongest suit was at that point in time.

Ari did have a tough time hitting number 1, especially with songs like Problem, no tears left to cry and Side To Side as her biggest hits in the top 5, but then finally got her justice during the TUN era and now sheβs like a magnet there. People did say Drake too and I guess you could count him, but he was less known as an actor.

Well and if we want to get technical Olivia was already known by many because of her Disney stuff and she's even had songs available, even if they weren't singles. She didn't literally come out of nowhere and one could argue that time is similar to Gaga and others having to work a single for a bit to get it to catch on.

I think folks are forgetting her because she fizzled so quickly after, but Iggy Azalea came out with #1, #2, and #3 hits within a few months with Fancy, Problem, and Black Widow.

The only prediction by a trusted predictor has Butter with 196.3k sales and 606 points, and Good 4 u at 68.8M streams and 581 points. My guess is that Butterβs sales will fall in the 175k-225k range, while Good 4 uβs streams will fall in the 67.5M-70M streams range. I could see the race being close, or Butter winning by a comfortable margin.

Some more data: at least on Spotify, good 4 u is running slightly ahead of drivers license's insane week 1 so far. Assuming it holds steady today and tomorrow, should wind up around 30-32M US Spotify streams! (DL had 30.4M week 1) Not sure how the streams compare on other platforms.

^The diference was that drivers license first started similar to good 4 u's first week, relatively slowly and picked up as the week went on even if the latter's numbers didn't end up as large as the former. This week's numbers for good for u are mostly linear, which drivers license achieved from days 4 to 7 during its first week. In the end, they might reach similar numbers as shown in the graph, but how they got there is a different story.
