It looks like Peaches might take the top spot in radio.

So many songs getting large negative updates today. Is this due to Memorial Day weekend, and is this going to normalize on Tuesday?

That song would not have gone #1 without BTS tho, so you shouldn't be counting it as a #1 for anyone if you feel that way. It’s the chart equivalent of working on a group project where you and a couple other classmates pulled two all-nighters in a row, researching, writing, editing and then 20 minutes before it’s due, the other classmate who contributed nothing yet jumps in and says, “hey, you can use my printer!” They all get an A+. No, the equivalent would be if a project was going to get a B, and then the 3rd partner added 1 or 2 slides to the presentation to bump it up to an A. The fact remains that the song would not have gone #1 without the remix, so discrediting BTS for the #1 is basically like saying the song never went #1 at all.

If the BTS version was the most consumed version that week, it should've gotten the credit. I'm kind of skeptical (was radio playing it?), but if thats what Billboard found it deserves it I guess.

Let's be real, though, nobody will care about that remix years from now, just like how nobody cares about the Nicki Minaj remix of Say So that went to #1 last year, or the Britney Spears remix of S&M that went to #1 a decade ago (unless you're a stan of any of the acts involved). It'll be a headache for chart nerds like me who will see that the version of the song that went to #1 is different from what's credited on the Year-End and All-Time lists, but beyond that it's effectively meaningless.

I agree, and I don't mind 1 or 2-week credited remixes as much as some other people do. With "Savage Love" (and "Say So" with Nicki Minaj, for example) the issue is that the remix was more popular in just 1 of 3 metrics the Hot 100 uses -- but because of mass buying, the artists were given credit. Both of these remixes have >600 million less streams than the originals on Spotify. I think if Billboard made it so that the remix needs to be more popular in at least 2 metrics, it could be helpful in eliminating these situations, as most long-lasting remixes start with at least good streams + sales.

I didn't want to comment on anything posted by you ever again and I'm not gonna bother disproving the whole "good 4 u is only strong in one metric" bs, everyone else has already done that, or the fact that selling outstadiums has nothing to do with the charts (although who's to say that Olivia won't sell out when concerts start). But how f**king dare you. How f**king dare you try and pretend to be against xenophobia and racism against Asians and then deny someone's race. How f**king dare you try and make a point by how chart success in some way fights against anti-Asian sentiments. And how dare you also try and paint Olivia's stans as being collectively racist when ARMY stans (who are bigger and louder) have been attacking her and making racist comments as well. You can deny it all you want, but if you're allowed to generalize Olivia stans as being racist, why can't I do the same with ARMY? As an Asian, this is f**king disrespectful, crude and worst of all, antithetical. You don't make you or ARMY stans look good by doing this s**t. You only make yourselves and the movement worse by dragging it and trying to relate it to chart games. You embarrass everyone involved. You wanna call out Pulse for being racist? How bout you first apologize to the many Asian members on Pulse I hope that $100K y'all spent that could've been donate towards Pro-Asian orgs and charities was worth all this nonsense omg the burn. Good job. For real, props to dremolus. I'm a new member, but I really enjoy how this community calls out obvious nonsense.

It's not just BTS. I felt that way ever since Britney was credited on S&M. Artists should not be able to pad their stats simply by tagging along on another's song. More like if you didn’t create a huge long term impact on the remix you’re on, it shouldn’t count. Britney on S&M, Nicki on Say So and BTS on Savage Love are perfect example for this, but if its something like Billy Ray Cyrus on OTR, then by all means be credited all you want. There’s also the 50/50 route, like Beyonce on Savage, where her credit can vary depending on what aspect of the charts you look at.

each of those examples created an impact on the week that it hit. That is all that matters for this chart.

So if Billboard got rid of website sales, would iTunes be the only thing counted or would there be others?

Getting rid of website sales because of bts frustration would be difficult to justify I think and unlikely to happen

Well, Billboard themselves made a precedent with their global/intl 200.

I think the easier thing to do to manage sales would be to increase the divisor and limit song sales to 1 per consumer. That won’t happen anytime soon because the music industry still holds a lot of weight in sales for some reason, but I can hope.
(EDIT: I’m talking specifically about the Hot 100 here. The Global 200 and Global excl. US 200 are fine as they are. Sorry if this caused confusion.)

mass buying in specific locations were at one time capped by Soundscan, by looking for unusual spikes in specific locations. Mass buying on a global scale (like BTS) is still for better or worse,a measure of popularity. Location tracking is obviously harder here

Well, Billboard themselves made a precedent with their global/intl 200. That hasn't really affected BTS though, Dynamite was extremely popular on both the global and excl. US charts and Butter is very likely to shatter the streaming debut record on both charts as well.

and there may be other reasons for that limitation for the Global charts besides BTS.

It's not just BTS. In fact, believe it or not, website sales possibly screwed BTS out of a week at #1. This is from Franchise, which stole a week at #1 on the 10/10 chart due to website sales:
Streams, sales & airplay: "Franchise," released Sept. 25 at midnight ET, opens with 19.4 million U.S. streams and 98,000 sold (58,000 on cassette and CD; 40,000 digital downloads) in its first week, ending Oct. 1, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.

I mean tracking downloads from specific artists in specific countries all have different currency, prices, rules etc. for buying. Lumping that into one global chart might be statistically problematic which likely why they chose the larger online retailers that serve multiple countries.

Also, I assume countries like China would be an issue specifically since songs are very cheap to buy there and there's over 1 billion people to buy the extremely cheap songs.

some weeks of dynamite sales WW 36k US 136k
WW 29k US 78k
WW 58k US 153k
WW 20k US 44k
so yes, website sales did make a huge difference in the us.

The difference between their performance WW vs in the US is that they rely on streaming since they can usually beat almost anyone globally in that department due to YouTube (and Spotify to an extent), although their global sales are still higher than most other artists as well.

^For Butter, only just slightly over 7% of its global weekly music video views came from the US, which is no surprise.

See it works both ways. But it doesn't work both ways. The whole point of streaming is to play songs over and over again, that you don't need to buy a copy of a song. That's why the platforms exist. There's really no reason to buy a song more than once. Once you have the digital copy, you can play the song as many times as you want. Every purchase after the first is massbuying, unless there's a different version that you want to buy. But even then it can be massbuying if you don't have any intention of listening to it.
