In a logical world it’ll be next week, and Stay and Industry Baby will be battling for the #1. We don’t live in a logical world.
Either Billboard is gonna step in and change their website sales rules, or (more likely) it’ll drop when radio starts dropping it. No matter how they paint it they were STRUGGLING this week to get the #1 and this is not a sustainable model, especially once the industry support the song DOES have rn goes away

In all seriousness though if this kind of Chart manipulation continues in the Future and many of these A-List Music Artists end up getting blocked from hitting #1 due to the BTS Army will Billboard take action by changing the sales formula? Cause if not then that will just damage the accuracy and the credibility of the Chart.

I don't mind sales still being counted but why the hell are people allowed to buy 4 copies of a song on a website and have that count towards the Hot 100? Website sales should not be allowed on the Hot 100.

Website sales are not the issue here, Why do you think that Website sales shouldn't be allowed to count on the Hot 100 just because of the Mass buying? The only reason the major labels list digital singles on their webstores is to facilitate mass buying. It doesn’t always work, but the only times D2C is a major factor is when mass buying is afoot. Much like how making physical-digital bundles only count once the physical component shipped caused physical-digital bundles to stop being a thing, getting rid of the allowance of bulk buying in the first place would lead to webstores stop trying to list things. Like, there is no reason in the digital marketplace for a customer to buy 4 of the exact same track, much less 8 with Columbia’s shenanigans for Butter and Permission to Dance with their “alternative single cover” “versions”. I hope then continuing to take the mick forces Billboard to reconsider that antiquated standard.

Will the Army aim at BEP's record (26 weeks at #1)? They can try, but I think it would be difficult. The record tying week would be 11/27 and record breaking week would be 12/4, which would put us into the holiday season. I think radio will have moved on from these BTS songs by that point.

If Army doesn’t keep buying it, is there a possibility that Permission to Dance misses the YE?

The difference is this is the dead of summer and not the holiday season, so PTD won’t totally capitulate like LGO. If LGO had been done in the summer, it would have never broken the Trollz record. I think it would have a run similar to Franchise instead.

The thing is that Butter didn't really block anything from #1, it only cut the weeks that G4U spent on the summit. If the Army does however block a song with industry support from going to #1 in general, which could happen with Industry Baby and Stay, then the protests will start, and Billboard may be forced to change their rules

Imagine Ariana dropped the lead single from AG7(?) and it had record breaking streaming (very possible) only for it to lose to "150k" "sales" 💀

So if BTS ends up blocking Stay or Industry Baby from taking the #1, then that could finally be the deciding factor in Columbia saying "OK, this s**t has gone too far," just as I assume every other major label (especially Olivia's label Interscope) has decided already.

Exactly. That group isn't on some fringe label. Columbia is completely complicit here and could easily shut this down by removing the 50 versions of the 2 songs. Something tells if a certain gay, black artist gets blocked at #2, he will use his social and amazing marketing savvy to 'discuss' the issue. Website sales should count, they're great for fan engagement. It's simply been abused by the label (issuing the multiple versions) and by dark $$$ that likely comes from the artists themselves. I'd feel differently, if the fans were actually spending their money.
