You guys hate and lack of judgement when it comes to slaming bts is showing I cant imagine a US artist being under tbis amount of scrutinity and people thinking its ok and twisting the narrative so the artist is in the wrong. Read the f**king article, and also read other articles billboard wrote about bts before s**ting your pants with fear of a partnership Yall are pathetic. That article is a disrespect towards an artist. Do they ask Dua about how she feels about being on the top 10 till this day because of radio? Or did they ask olivia how she felt about being on top of every playlist on spotify and the promo the platform did for her? Because the same day butter was coming out she was the cover of the korean New music friday playlist. Anyway, everything we say here is always disregard as crazy fans so I dont even know why I bother. Go on, I guess. Gurl nobody moved |

I think that question was pretty reasonable, considering that butter was #1 pretty much purely off of the fans dedication & metagaming, unlike Olivia & Dua having helped along with strong stats in other areas. Bts fans are for sure overreacting here

Streaming or at least Spotify has kinda stalled it's growth a bit, hasn't it? Less than 1% of the US population is hearing "STAY" on a daily basis on Spotify. Yeah current hit streaming is approaching it's "peak" in the US. Video streaming in 2021 compared to 2020 decreased (filtered 2020 vs filltered 2021, so it's not because of filltering).
In 2021 after the first 32 weeks (thanks to oldbloke posting this from Billboard Bulletin) total streaming increased by 9.6%.
current streaming increased 3.2%, while catalog streaming increased 13.2% compared to the same period last year.
Current streaming will "peak" some years before catalog peaks.
And ofc the lack of big releases isn't helping much.
Sidenote: Spotify Worldwide is different story. Out of the last 6 days, 5 had 2 songs over 1M on Spotify India. The platform is growing rapidly.

If Kanye, Travis or Lil Nas X get blocked by BTS from the #1 slot (again, in Nas' case) then I could legitimately see the rap crowd instigating drama with billboard, and the thing is that it would damage billboard's credibility. Look what happened with the Grammys - they're dying, because they were involved in a very similar situation. If Billboard doesn't learn from that, I think that Spotify, for example, or Apple could launch their own chart in the very near future. That will be what the rap fans will use as the main metric of success, that will generate more clicks, more revenue and, ultimately, that will also dictate the general credibility of the biggest artists in the future. I could see Billboard getting completely replaced in a decade. Is getting a few more likes on twitter really worth destroying your business in the long run? - Drake - Kanye - The Weeknd - Lil Nas X - Travis - Kendrick - Silk Sonic All coming to end the inorganic anyways! |

But that's why charts should always be taken with a grain of salt, and why things like AC radio should still be included. At the end of the day even the #1 song is not listened to in any way by a large portion of the country. Hell, look at Thriller which will turn 40 years old in a couple years. It just got certified for 30 something million. Considering many people had it on cassette, CD, mp3, and/or streaming, the actual number of people who've had it is less than 30 million. Billions of people have existed in the U.S. in that 40 year span, so the #1 album ever has been owned by like 2% of the population or less. That should put things in perspective when we discuss what "people" like, what "the country" says is popular, etc. |

Streaming is always interesting cause one person can contribute to a songs stream multiple times, however one stream can be heard by multiple people at once such as parties and events. Same can probably be said bout radio too. That's why trying to gage how much of the US has listened to a song in a week is difficult. Plus Tik Tok which is not included in these charts contributes to the exposure of a song. A song like Stay is probably exposed to way more than 1% of the US population on a daily basis because of these factors despite what Spotify streams suggests.
