12. Ladies Night - Kool & The Gang

"Ladies Night" was the first single by this band from Jersey City to feature vocals by then-new member James "J.T." Taylor. Also reaching the Top 10 on the Hot 100, it's a play on the use of "ladies night" at bars and clubs to attract more females, which in turn attracts more men. It was notably sampled in the remix to Lil Kim's "Not Tonight" and was interpolated in Samantha Mumba's "Baby, Come Over". British girl group Atomic Kitten covered the song in 2003.

10. Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now - McFadden & Whitehead

Gene McFadden and John Whitehead wrote and produced a number of soul classics in the '70s for artists like The O'Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, and Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. As artists, their first charted entry was their biggest hit, their lone Hot 100 entry, and was considered the new black national anthem. Sadly, both men are no longer with us. John Whitehead was shot and killed outside his home studio in Philadelphia in 2004, and Gene McFadden died of liver and lung cancer in 2006.

Re: We Are Family. I initially had it lower and then moved it up. I agree it’s overplayed at this point, but I still think it’s a good song. It’s different than say Walking on Sunshine, which I don’t like at all and the repeated exposure has made me sour on it more.

Sisters Debbie, Joni, Kim, and Kathy Sledge had been recording and charting for a few years, but it wasn't until they met up with Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic that they saw any sustained success on the charts. Their first collaboration resulted in a #1 soul hit and a Top 10 on the Hot 100. It was notably sampled in Will Smith's #1 hit "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It".

Fun fact: this was the song that Chic was originally set to record while "I Want Your Love" was originally intended for Sister Sledge.
