"455 Rocket" was released in January 1997 as the first single from Kathy's ninth studio album, Love Travels, and reached number 21 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. In what might be one of the biggest disappointments of the rankdown, this exits before the top 5 where it remained for the majority of its run. Initially, everyone had ranked this at or near their top 10 which included a trio of top 5s from someguy, Kanenrá:ke, and myself. While it did move back from its top 3 position that it held onto for the middle part, it was still able to withstand a lone ranking outside of the top 15 from Cody Wants Out... which in turn pushed this to the back of the top 5. That was until a LAST PLACE ranking from bboat11 came out of nowhere which it was never able to recover from. The only silver lining is that his ranking didn't end up pushing this out of the top 10 altogether. Despite this missing the Top 20 on the country charts, this has long been a fan favorite and one that I assumed going into this was easily going to land inside the top 5. But, bboat11 hasn't been shy in his overall opinion regarding Kathy Mattea as a vocalist, so we shouldn't be all that surprised that he was bound to have a major flop in the ranks here.

"She Came from Fort Worth" was released in April 1990 as the fourth single from Kathy's fifth studio album, Willow in the Wind, and reached #2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. This is a song that some of you may have remembered from the 1990 country rankdown where it just missed the top 30 there. Unfortunately, its exit means that taylor becomes only our second participant to lose their #1 song while Cody Wants Out... loses a top 3. All but one participants ranked this somewhere within their top 15 with it picking up a trip of top 10s as well.

Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses Love Travels Standing Knee Deep in a River (Dying of Thirst) Time Passes By Walking Away a Winner Where’ve You Been Will "Where've You Been" be able to make it into the top 5 or will it finally succumb to the deep-seated aversions from both castleoblivion26 and .indulgecountry?! Stay tuned to find out!

I wouldn't call it a deep-seated aversion, but "Where've You Been" is far from one of her best. It's just a bore compared to everything remaining, and everything else that made the top 10 and has already sadly been booted before it. :/

"Time Passes By" was released in March 1991 as the first single and title track from Kathy's sixth studio album, Time Passes By and reached #7 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. The song also features Trisha Yearwood on harmony vocals. Considering that this is my most played song from Kathy Mattea, I opted to rank it as my #1 song even though I just as easily could've gone with a couple of others. Going into this, I had kept my expectations a bit low as I'm sure this was a discovery for some of you. That said, I'm quite pleased to see this not only make the top 10, but also only miss the top 5 by six points. Five others joined me in the top 10 including both Cody Wants Out... and castleoblivion26 in the top 5. That left only two participants placing this outside of their top 12 with it receiving a lone bottom 5 from Kanenrá:ke.

Don't worry castleoblivion26, my rank will help tank "Where've You Been" and hopefully it'll miss top 5 at least. ;) It in fact does make the top 5 after all! How much further will it be able to go, though?!

"Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses" would have likely been my #1 here so will be rooting for that even tho I didn't do this and really have no vested interest in the outcome, lol.

"Where've You Been" was released in November 1989 as the third single from Kathy's fifth studio album, Willow in the Wind, and reached #10 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. The song would go on to win the Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 1990 as well as the Grammy Award for Best Country Female Performance. In what is likely the wildest run of any song in the rankdown, this managed to climb all the way out of last place (seriously castleoblivion26?!) and come to a rest inside the top 5 in the final moments. This all but looked like it would only barely make the top 10, though, which is despite the five top 5 rankings it managed to pick up including a pair of #2s from both bboat11 and Kris Kringle. While it was able to recover from its initial start in last place, It was a second bottom 5 ranking from .indulgecountry which in turn would push this to the back of the top 10. Luckily, it was given a lifeline at the very end and managed to barely sneak into the top 5.

It'll fly through the air with the greatest of ease As much as you want, now, as much as you need Across every mountain and all seven seas Oh the eagles'll carry it on God's gentle breeze And I'll never give up, I'll never give in And you'll know that it's me hear the voice singin' 4. “Love Travels” Released: August 1997 Billboard Country Peak: #39 Album: Love Travels Total: 88 Average: 8.80 Std Dev: 6.61 {Songs Remaining} Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses Standing Knee Deep in a River (Dying of Thirst) Walking Away a Winner

"Love Travels" was released in August 1997 as the third single and title track to Kathy's ninth studio album. Despite this only being a Top 40 hit on the country charts, this managed to not only remain a consistent top 10 contender for its entire run, but it in fact looked as though it would land just inside the top 3. In the end, though, the top 3 songs pulled ahead in the final stretch pushing this just outside of that. Seven participants ended up ranking this within their top 8 with a bulk of those coming in the form of a top 5 with .indulgecountry being the highest with a #3. There've been no shortage of questionable rankings throughout this rankdown, though, and that is no different here as Kris Kringle placed this in his bottom 5.

"Knee Deep" has such a cool song title. Beautiful tune as well.
Rooting for "Walking Away a Winner" (what an appropriate song title for the rankdown), but both songs are A+ so either way the outcome will be good.

"Standing Knee Deep in a River (Dying of Thirst)" was released in January 1993 as the second single from Kathy's seventh studio album, Lonesome Standard Time, and reached number 19 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. This is also the first song to exit of which remained a top 5 contender for the entirety of its run and even managed to make it to the top 2 early on. While all but three participants ranked this in their top 6, everyone still placed this somewhere within their top 20. Unfortunately Kanenrá:ke loses his #1 just before the finale with five others losing a top 5. This is actually the second song featured of which Kathy covered from the late Don Williams (with the first being "Come From the Heart"). Don originally recorded this the year before in 1992 for his album Currents.

And there we have it folks! Two of Kathy's most iconic hits ended up in the grand finale with "Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses" being the runaway winner as well as our least polarizing song. In a strange twist, the most polarizing song goes to the runner-up "Walking Away a Winner" as all but three participants ranked it inside their top 2. Despite it picking up four #1 rankings from castleoblivion26, .indulgecountry, someguy, and bboat11, it still was never able to reclaim the mantle on top of the thrown as the two top 20s from Kanenrá:ke and taylor as well as a lone bottom 5 from Kris Kringle always kept it looking from a distance. As for the winner, everyone placed “Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses” inside their top 8 with eight of those rankings coming from within the top 3. Given that it is one of Katy's signature songs, it went into this as the clear favorite I think and congratulations are in order to both ccarter1023 and Cody Wants Out... for their perfect rankings!
