"Where've You Been" was released in November 1989 as the third single from Kathy's fifth studio album, Willow in the Wind, and reached #10 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. The song would go on to win the Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 1990 as well as the Grammy Award for Best Country Performance, Female for Kathy's recording. In what is likely the wildest run of any song in the rankdown, this managed to climb all the way out of last place (seriously castleoblivion26?!) and come to a rest inside the top 5 in the final moments. This all but looked like it would only barely make the top 10, though, which is despite the five top 5 rankings it managed to pick up including a pair of #2s from both bboat11 and Kris Kringle. While it was able to recover from its initial start in last place, It was a second bottom 5 ranking from .indulgecountry which in turn would push this to the back of the top 10. Luckily, it was given a lifeline at the very end and managed to barely sneak into the top 5. To be fair I did like "Where've You Been" initially cause it is really pretty but the more I listened to it the more I just wanted it to be over. For that it had to go to the bottom. I can enjoy slow ballads but this one just lost me on repeat listens.

Lolwut at those three low ranks for "Walking Away"? What a mess, lmao. At least it still made the top 2 and everyone else made up for that floppy taste by putting it in our top 2s where it belonged.

Those low ranks for "Walking Away a Winner" seemed to have prevented the top two from becoming a tug of war; too bad that didn't come to fruition. It would've been fun to watch. Anyways, it looks like I should count my blessings (again) that my top two turned out to be the top two. It easily could've been reversed if we didn't know how this would turn out beforehand. P.S. I'm having a difficult time understanding those low ranks for WAAW. Still a jam to this day!

Also, sorry to those who love "455 Rocket". I had no idea people would like that one! When I was listening to it, I felt like ranking it high in comparison to this list would be like ranking Patty Loveless' "You're So Cool" high in comparison to her big hits Like, this was so cheesy, with a melody that fell quite a bit short of the catchiness that it was aiming for. Glad to see it was my only real big variation from the pack, considering that most of this stuff was first listens for me! (And yassss lemme beat taylor in closeness! Stay floppy, windbag! ) Edit: Trying to claim that "Betty's Got A Bass Boat" belongs alongside the ranks of "Maybe It Was Memphis", "Spilled Perfume", "When You Walk In The Room", etc. is probably a more fitting comparison to what "455 Rocket" feels like to me, since "Betty's" was actually a single.

I am deceased at the first two features above this post being from an album called Coal, but then the song "Hello, My Name Is Coal" is not from that albumfact that you've done nothing but nitpicked and snarked at Kathy Mattea for the entire rankdown with nothing even remotely positive to add regarding her career .

Now wait just a minute. I have said very little in this thread at all, but when I have, I have very intentionally avoided inserting any sort of value statements into the things that I have said. I said she sounds like some random elementary teacher MONTHS AGO in a completely different rankdown, and 90% of my "participation" in this thread has been people giving me s**t for that and me not even responding to it. The one mention I made of it in this thread was to say that I stand by my original assessment because she doesn't have mainstream polish. Which is a statement completely devoid of value, because there are plenty of people who lack mainstream polish but still have remarkable careers. In that same sentence, I said that she is obviously very talented, and that it was nice to be more familiar with her. Man, what a negative bitch I'm being! I also said she reminded me of KT Oslin, which I am sure the majority of people (Kathy herself included) would consider to be a positive thing, and believe it or not I even intended it as a bit of a compliment. The ONE criticism I have made in this entire rankdown is to explain why I didn't like "455 Rocket", and even then I did not "nitpick and snark" it to death, I merely compared it to what it reminded me of from other people's careers that I am more familiar with, to explain why it did so poorly on my list. And then you come for me over a comedic observation based on the fact that "coal" is not a very frequently used word in song and album titles, and she somehow used it twice on two different projects You know better than to treat me as if I am some kind of troll who is only here to s**tpost. And acting like I was some huge negative influence on this rankdown when I didn't even comment once during the reveals because the whole thing happened while I was out of town..... I don't even know what else to say. I'm sorry you invented some deep-seated hatred that I must have for Kathy Mattea and then interpreted my very few comments in that light? I would say more, but I respect you too much to try and make this personal, although you obviously don't have that same respect for me, which is a bit of a disappointing realization.

Sorry tim I'm just catching up on my Pulse stuff. The definite top 2 were correct. I would've been happy with either winning. Awesome job as always, my discovery from this RD was "Love Travels" what a great song! Thanks again!
