Imagine being that obsessed with Fancy Like. Ever since Blinding Lights departed from the charts, emptiness has consumed him. His life felt meaningless without Blinding Lights lingering around the charts, all he sees is darkness. He had to resort to coping by picking Fancy Like, out of all songs, to fill the void he so desperately needs. Nah, He is still the source of all things Blinding Lights - " Blinding Lights forever" I only see two posts about BL updates in the last day though - so he is slowing down a bit - so there is room to focus on another song now - LOL

Will A*my continue mass buying a song that BTS is only featured on? Curious on if they'll push for numerous weeks at #1/top 10 or just let it die (we can hope).

After seeing it not return to the UWC on 9/25, I’ve accepted it’s over. It’s not going to chart in any of the US Billboard charts again. I posted BL’s final stats on the end of the 9/25 Hot 100 thread, and it’s time to let it go.

Cannot tell you the relief I feel knowing BTS are gonna get a #1 that I think is unequivocally great. Had no idea that Coldplay and BTS of all groups would be able to bring out the best in each other but this is a genuinely fantastic pop song and it feels good knowing Coldplay's first #1 in 13 years (and only other #1 besides Viva La Fucking Vida) is gonna be a good song

If Coldplay hits no. 1, 13 years gap since their first no. 1, Viva La Vida in 2008. What group currently holds the record for the longest wait between recent and last no.1? probably Cher. I didn’t check, but “gypsies tramps & thieves” topped the H100 in the early 70s and “Believe” did it in ‘99 or 2000. That’s a pretty massive gap and I doubt anyone else has matched it Imagine if RATCT was able to beat AIWFCIY for a week...

If Coldplay is the Cher of 2021, then Walker Hayes is about to be the Santana equivalent. Hard to believe Santana didn’t get a #1 during his early 70s prime, and had to wait 30 years (until he was past 50) to get his #1’s.

His first single was released in 2010 so the obvious answer to your question is No. Yeah it literally makes no sense to compare Walker Hayes to Santana especially since Santana released his first single in 1969 and didn’t have a huge hit in the US until 1999.

Late career #1, but then again, we had BRC with OTR a few years ago, and I think that would be a better comparison to Santana. I can't think of any other artist that came virtually out of nowhere to get their first big hit in their 40s. Daniel Powter is the closest I can think of, but he was 'only' 35.

Separate from the Hayes comparison, I will note Santana had several hits in the 70s ("Evil Ways" peaked at #9 and "Black Magic Woman" peaked at #4, and "Oye Como Va" was a top 15 hit that is in the Grammy Hall of Fame). Maybe you don't consider those 'huge hits,' but your post implied he hadn't really done anything until 1999.

Sia had her first U.S. #1 at age 40 or 41. She had hits before, though, but I don't think her first U.S. top 10 was until she was 36?

Oh I see what you did there, Yeah I know that Santana had 2 Top 10 hits before “Smooth”, What I meant to say is that he didn’t have a song that was as huge of a hit in the US until “Smooth” of course came out and became Santana’s first #1 hit on the Hot 100.

We also don’t have to force some comparison to the past to whatever is happening now.

Max Martin is a genius. He managed to make BTS sound good. The production and layering is fantastic in My Universe. Also love the outro

BTS is about to tie Ariana Grande and Drake for the most number 1 debuts and they’re doing it much quicker than either of them did which I don’t know how to feel about.

^Agreed. Life Goes On and Permission to Dance would be among the lowest ranking #1s All-Time, joined by Trollz among the most recent #1 debuts.

Imagine being that obsessed with Fancy Like. I actually like Heat Waves more than I like Fancy Like, but I know HW will not challenge FL for #1 unless it’s radio really picks back up. But I’m going to enjoy the meltdowns of FL going to #1. Yeah, me too if it does. I might seriously start to stan Phieagles!!

This decade 21 of the 33 number one songs have debuted there, "Number One Debut" and "Number One" basically now mean the same thing

Unlike say, Cher, Santana's music wasn't primarily geared toward singles/pop radio. Those 2 #1 albums in 1970/ 1971 + several Top 10 albums better reflect Santana's success than a late-career #1 single.
The difference between Cher and Santana and acts like Coldplay, which isn't even that far removed from their last Top 10 single, is that Cher didn't need a feature to return to #1. That fact Cher did it solo is noteworthy and overlooked. It's unlikely a true legacy act could do that today.

It was a feature, but Wanz had his first (and only) big hit at age 50 with "Thrift Shop." He had been working full time as a software test engineer before that.
