Been a while since we’ve had a week with literally one song rising 10 spots or higher I hope we're not already in the winter freeze, we need some new songs! Don't worry its not quite yet, we've got 3 album bombs in a row coming lol

The video took it there. It had a short stay and didn’t go higher because of the album though. Just trying to explain why it wasn’t an out of the box number one The Thriller video was out 7 weeks before the single was released. Radio certainly had been playing Thriller before it's official release. The video certainly pushed album sales during December 1983. The single dropped end of January 1984. The single debuted at #20, which was high for that era. The 45 issued was an edited remix that omitted the Vincent Price rap. I don't know if that version's been released digitally/streaming in US. If Halloween falls on a Thursday in 2024 - the full tracking week thanks to 24 being a Leap Year. That could be the year it eclipses the #4 peak. The video singlehandedly shot the album back to #1 for 17 more weeks after seemingly peaking - 5 months earlier That and being the 7th single would take away from its impact from being #1. --- The album version of the song was the focus

Yes, for sure it helped the album sell a ton more (though I'd imagine his record number of Grammy wins around then also helped), but looking at the RIAA certifications, it appears the single also sold very well, going platinum (a million copies, a lot for a physical single back then), however it wasn't certified until 1989, so maybe it was reissued? And even its chart run would indicate it did better than the fifth and sixth singles from that album, Human Nature (#7 peak) and PYT (#10). Say Say Say I can understand why it did way better than all the others though, despite its quality, because it wasn't on Michael's album AND it was with Paul McCartney. Kind of strange that they chose to release PYT and Say Say Say around Halloween instead of Thriller, which clearly was a Halloween smash they had on their hands, and they clearly must have been prepping and filming the video by that time, so why release it right after Halloween? lol.

LOL - just trying to help people understand why it did not hit #1 - because it latched onto to Halloween after the fact, Thriller is the song that has stood the test of time the best. Had it been released earlier or video views count for chart purposes like they do now, it may have gone to #1 at that time too.
Never said it did not do well

Thriller (album) had 3 songs that stood the test of time in Billie Jean, Beat It, and Thriller. In fact, one could make the argument these are the 3 songs in the 80s that beat stood the test of time.

Time to add Heat Waves to the list of songs that hit the top 10 long after it peaked in other countries.

Toto's Africa as well. There's a handful of songs from the 80s that have experienced surges recently.

As a final point to this week, HITS had Bad Habits with -2.5k sales in their weekly Song Revenue chart, which usually only come as a result of digital song sales being converted via complete my album on iTunes. I guess those for any previously sold single that was converted regardless of whether it was sold in this week or else, a negative number wouldn't be possible.

I remember being floored when I was notified of the fact that Thriler has never actually been a #1 hit. It felt like the biggest song ever due to how popular the video is. Conversely, I had never heard the Paul McCartney collaboration that was apparently the best charting hit of that album... It was a late single, and of course the popularity of the video didn't count like it would today. It would have been a huge #1 in the streaming era.
