Heat Waves has got to be one of the most interesting chart runs ever. First being referenced in the now biggest Article of Our Own fanfiction of the same name about Minecraft Youtubers, and it rose in US Spotify to the 30s. As once the meme train of that ran out, it got picked up by Tiktok. It starting rising up in Global Spotify at this point. Then FIFA got the song and it was the most loved song on the soundtrack. Global Spotify exploded and US Spotify along with it. Then the popular Netflix show Never Had I Ever featured the song. By then it was too late. Everyone has Heat Waves faking them out. I would definitely say the Netflix show helped resurge its second wind on streaming as its the most recent media that the song was on. Its also one of the few songs on the charts that’s doing well on all metrics and even though our 2 biggest songs so far this decade has proven to us that this might not seem like a big deal, still having big numbers across the board on week 41 is still a thing to look at, especially a song that hasn’t peaked yet.

Maybe this era won’t be as big for him as his last one was; it’s still been pretty good so far. Um actually it's doing even better singles-wise? His last project only spawned one smash hit, I Don't Care. The others didn't even reach the top 10. I don’t think it's fair to consider his last album before Equals to be Divide and ignore the whole collabs album. He already ""underperformed"" to Divide's standards two years ago. I was referring to Divide, but you’re right. This album might have more substantial hits than the collabs one - while I Don’t Care was pretty big, I wouldn’t discount the album’s other singles that still did decently even if they didn’t have much longevity.

wow only 5 new debuts, this week's super slow
BOTW: Eat It - the only really good song this week. Overpass Graffiti does nothing for me, there were better songs on =.
WOTW: Ghost Town - well I guess we're already getting ready to replace Shawn Mendes. Just a shame he's not any better but yet given how boring and basic yet still catchy this is...get ready for radio to play this to death. Ugh.

Another random stat on Monster Mash - charting in week 38 this week.... by today's standards not a big number but
Something for BLfan
At the time of week 37 in September 1973, Monster Mash trailed only The Twist (39 weeks) for longest chart run in Hot 100 history

#76. Latto - Big Energy (+12) Like I said, this will probably be a big hit in 2022.

Interestingly enough this song was a 34+ week song missed in the records I had so it was nice to be able to update it :)

Rockwell - Somebody's Watching Me where did Thriller peak last year? I wonder if it has potential to hit the Top 10 again in the future? It re-entered at #48. The latter could happen if somehow Halloween even more popular, musically speaking. But perhaps this year was a blip due to things starting to return to normal. We'll have to wait until next year to find out for sure.

The growth of streaming to other genres beyond rap probably has something to do with it

I remember being floored when I was notified of the fact that Thriler has never actually been a #1 hit. It felt like the biggest song ever due to how popular the video is. Conversely, I had never heard the Paul McCartney collaboration that was apparently the best charting hit of that album...

Speaking of Paul McCartney, I hope Wonderful Christmastime can become his 58th Top 10 this holiday season before Drake totally blows past his total.

Conversely, I had never heard the Paul McCartney collaboration that was apparently the best charting hit of that album... While there was a Paul McCartney collaboration on MJ’s “Thriller” album that peaked at #2 called “The Girl Is Mine”, it wasn’t that album’s best charting hit (“Billie Jean” and ”Beat It” both hit #1). With that said, Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson also had a gigantic hit collaboration on PM‘s “Pipes of Peace” album called “Say Say Say” which hit #1 for six weeks. All of the above happened in 1983.

The video took it there. It had a short stay and didn’t go higher because of the album though.
Just trying to explain why it wasn’t an out of the box number one

BL didn’t chart again on the Hot 100, but it apparently made it back on the UWC chart:

The video took it there. It had a short stay and didn’t go higher because of the album though. Just trying to explain why it wasn’t an out of the box number one The Thriller video was out 7 weeks before the single was released. Radio certainly had been playing Thriller before it's official release. The video certainly pushed album sales during December 1983. The single dropped end of January 1984. The single debuted at #20, which was high for that era. The 45 issued was an edited remix that omitted the Vincent Price rap. I don't know if that version's been released digitally/streaming in US. If Halloween falls on a Thursday in 2024 - the full tracking week thanks to 24 being a Leap Year. That could be the year it eclipses the #4 peak.

My understanding is that the US single edit without Vincent Price’s rap (the commercial 45 version, aka "Remixed Short Version" that runs about 4:07) has only ever been released digitally (on CD) in Japan and the UK.
