It’s hammer time!

First extra for today was first released by this California-born folk singer on her 1987 album Solitude Standing. Years later it was remixed by a British production duo. Instead of suing for copyright infringement, A&M decided to buy and release the remix. It was an international hit, topping the charts in 4 countries and reaching the Top 10 in many more. Stateside, it peaked at #10 on the R&B chart and #5 on the Hot 100.

Next, the biggest hit by this dance group from NYC. It topped the dance chart and peaked at #28 R&B and #4 on the Hot 100. Contains numerous samples and features a rap by Q-Tip and background vocals by Bootsy Collins.

I think Mariah has a strong chance to win this and both her tunes will prob be top 5 but it might be interesting to see a more socially conscious song upset here, no struggle no progress.
Two of the Quincy Jones tracks are outstanding and I hope to see the one with the magnificent arrangement in the top 5.

I think Hammer might be highest SD with En Vogue/Bell Biv DeVoe lowest. Acts like Skyy and Troop could be trapped in the bottom rungs and I hope Samuelle, my new fave discovery of the bunch has a fair showing. Johnny Gill can SING who knew, his and other rich tunes by After 7, Regina, Al B. and Keith will remain in the endless middle pushed down by big names like Prince and Whitney. Overall this is a compelling year for r&b, pop too.

37. Crazy - The Boys

Written by the four Abdulsamad brothers, who at the time ranged in age from 11 to 16, "Crazy" was their third and final song to top the R&B chart. It was also their second of two Hot 100 entries, peaking inside the Top 30. The music video features a parody of other music videos of the time, like Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation" and Madonna's "Vogue".

This marks the second time The Boys finished last in this series, as "Lucky Charm" was the first song out in the 1989 rankdown.

Since 1999 they've gone by the name Suns Of Light.

36. Tomorrow (A Better You, Better Me) - Quincy Jones feat. Tevin Campbell

The third release from Quincy's album Back On The Block was his third straight R&B chartttopper. Features lead vocals by a 13-year-old from Waxahachie, Texas, and features background vocals by Jaimee Foxworth, who at the time was Judy Winslow on Family Matters (and would later have a career in porn).

This was first recorded as an instrumental by The Brothers Johnson in 1976.
