Given “Easy On Me’s” debut, I was expecting first day numbers in conjunction with “Folklore” or higher. (“RED” is an anomaly given the amount of tracks so 90M+ would’ve been difficult). This is just outright underwhelming.

That said...

This makes me curious as to what Rihanna’s first day numbers will be like?

She could easily debut with the highest numbers for a female overall, and actually be more in line with Drake’s total but I presume thats dependent on how many tracks #R9 has and whether or not it’ll be a surprise release or standard release following a lead single.

Oofa, yeah Adele's debut is great for anyone but Adele — Taylor had 24 tracks above what Adele's lowest track debuted at, which is rough.

Also surprised at how well ATW is holding up — Easy on Me is obviously returning to number one but I don't think ATW is going to fall out of the top 10

Easy on Me debuted yesterday at #38 Country radio on Mediabase, with an audience of 5.665. Given that the current #1 song in the format has an audience of about 38, there is plenty of room for the song to grow in the format. And it should definitely manage to eventually get the highest Mediabase radio audience since the last callibration. It might take a while unless it does so before th upcoming yearly winter freeze at some radio formats.

On another note, both Taylor's Version songs didn't appear on today's update due to the eighth-day rolling effect.

The graphic is cute but it's unfair when Adele's album is shorter than a few of those. Can anyone average streams per track? It's a much better metric.

In terms of streaming Ariana is probably still the female leader with Taylor close behind (Taylor kinda lacks a bit of longevity). It's a shame that Ariana never quite managed to move pure sales that much.

Well those 5 six-minute+ songs are equivalent to 15 LNX tracks (album) or 10 Taylor tracks, so that's automatically going to suppress 30's cumulative streaming numbers. It's math.

This doesn’t work when you only need to stream 30 seconds.

Also the people who fully listen to an album are most likely going to do it whether it’s 2:30 average or 4:30 average. What most likely stops someone fully listening to an album is a large track list. Adele with 12 tracks is less likely to have people tune out through the album then an album with 25 tracks or something.

If an album is 10 tracks and 50 minutes or 20 tracks and 50 minutes I would more likely pause/stop listening to the latter because it’s just a lot to digest 20 songs in a single sitting even if the length isn’t that different.

I don't really buy for a second that the 6 minute songs were what caused the album to do less numbers than expected. Especially since most of those songs were deepcuts towards the latter half of the album, which in general tend to be less streamed, I think the fact a good chunk of people were streaming a 10 minute song days after release is enough to sway the idea people aren't willing to stream long songs.

Nor do I buy the idea that this album wasn't "designed for streaming" (whatever that means). Adele has always been a pop singer-songwriter and has always been commercially successful since her debut breakthrough with 18. This isn't some avant-garde experimental music with various instrumental changes or multiple 12+ minute songs, it's only just a little longer than her previous albums and again, it's not like singer-songwriters haven't shown the capacity for big streaming numbers (see lore, folk)

How bout we just go with Occam's Razor: people just weren't as interested or as excited for a full Adele album as we were expecting.

Adele and streaming is just a very interesting scenario, because we know she's been the biggest album seller of the last decade. But, also streaming has blown up within the past decade. So, is her fanbase (or the general public) more likely to purchase her album and just not stream it? Or are people more likely to not purchase the album and only stream it? To me, it looks like the vast majority are still going the purchase route.

While her streaming numbers are a bit lower than I expected, given the circumstances, they're still great numbers. Especially if you consider the fact she had all songs in the Top 13 of Spotify and all in the Top 12 of Apple Music.

Does it ever occur to you guys that the 2015 music market is completely different from the 2021 market? Adele doing lower than expected numbers was actually expected honestly. She was gone for 6 years and wasn’t consistent unlike Taylor who stayed consistent and relevant in the music scene, especially when streaming shifted to be the most dominant aspect of the way we consume music. She’ll probably do well on sales to back up the lower streaming numbers anyways so there shouldn’t be anything to worry about.

not sure how big apple numbers are, but based on spotify adele would only have one t10; the top album track is at 2.3 mil.

needy/nasa had over 2.9 million opening day streams, and ended up #14 and #17.
last great american dynasty had 3.3 million, my tears ricochet had 3.2 million, and ended up #13 (below 9 non-taylor songs) and #16.

my point wasn't the "new" vs "old." technically, "Easy on Me" is older than "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)."

point is, the songs on Adele's new album (11 of which came out yesterday) failed to top "All Too Well" yesterday, despite it being a 10-minute song. so Adele's album "not being streaming friendly because the songs are long" isn't necessarily a good excuse, lol. digging at Lil Nas X song lengths and for what? did someone hold a gun to Adele's head and force her to make 6-minute songs? don't get me wrong, songs being long definitely cuts into the replay value, but so does being boring.

Adele's Spotify numbers are great... for most other artists. and she's in no way "flopping." but they're underwhelming, especially considering some of y'all on this forum were expecting her to do 2 million+ SPS units in her first week and break records and all. "Easy on Me" exceeded my expectations (on Global Spotify) and broke some of those records, but her album seems to have attracted less plays/listeners. I'm hoping it holds up decently throughout the week to at least cross the 1 million SPS benchmark, since this might very well be the last album EVER to do it with the current Billboard 200 formula. and hey, it's miles and miles ahead of Taylor Swift's reputation quality-wise, which is currently the most recent million-seller iirc.

Any way you slice it these are just not terrific numbers, and all of the reasons previously brought up haven't really convinced me otherwise and just don't hold any water. We don't have the physical projections yet, which could change the overall picture, and of course there is always longevity or even continued upward growth to hedge on, but when you are an artist as established as Adele, that usually doesn't happen, and that would be an uphill battle that she would have to earn. The 2+ million possibility seems almost completely out of the picture, or even 1 million tbh. A 600k-900k figure would still be respectable though, just not nearly at the level she was before.

in GENERAL music consumption is significantly down since adele's last release. streaming numbers are higher obviously but radio and sales have never been weaker. its not shocking at all that she's not doing as well as her last two projects

No one's brought this up yet but her YT views are great for an album bomb! I think we're actually witnessing the effects of having an "older" fanbase of gen X/millennials who stick to YT to stream music. The lack of interest comes from Gen Z which is most of Spotify's userbase.
