Curious whether "You Make it Feel Like Christmas" by Gwen could debut on the Hot 100, it's grown tremendously this year and looks to be pretty close already I think. Is it even on the Bubbling Under chart? nope

^No, it debuted #16 on the Hot 100 Recurrents chart for 12/25. Which means it needs to be in the top 50 of the Hot 100 to debut. I think it is unlikely it will manage to do so this season. Pardon my ignorance, but could you explain to me how this works? It has never debuted on the Hot 100 before so i didn't think it would have to deal with any of those rules but obviously i'm wrong haha

If a song was released a couple of years or more ago it counts as a recurrent song whether or not it ever hit the charts, which means it has to get into the top 50 in order to debut. This has been an issue for songs before, I remember it coming up with Lizzo when her hits started having traction.

^Unfortunately, it seems that holiday songs are considered recurrent for Hot 100 purposes unless they are in the season they first became available. Given that You Make it Feel Like Christmas is from 2017, that would be the case. Thus, they are subjected to the top 50 threshold in the Hot 100 to chart there, regardless of whether they have previously debuted there or already have 20 weeks.

Will the ever-durable "Linus & Lucy" finally crack the chart? It's second holiday track in line to do so on the Dec. 25 recurrent chart, after Sinatra's "Jingle Bells."

The Bubbling Under is a 25-song extension of the Hot 100, and has the same rules for eligibility, albeit having no separate recurrency rules for songs in it. Edit: And yes Gwenny, older Christmas songs are unable to debut in the bottom 50 of the chart. We saw that this week when "Santa Baby" by Eartha Kitt debuted at #50 on the Hot 100.

The Taylor Versions are just extensions of the same song, same as with BTS putting out 37 versions of Butter, etc. Billboard is arbitrary with this too (as we saw with Donda, when all the 2-part songs were combined, except for Jail, whose Part I and II were counted separately).

TS's Hot 100 chart history has the song as two different entries, with the newer having the "(Old Timey Version)" added to its title.

The difference in the Christmas Tree Farms is that they are two completely different recordings (completely different/new vocal take, completely different/new instrumentation). Itβs not simply a remix like the aforementioned Buttersβ¦ itβs a complete redoβ thatβs why it debuted this year and wasnβt considered a re-entry.

But really, though, how does Jail Part I and II getting counted as separate songs, when there are 3 other songs from the same album that had Parts I and II get combined make any sense? Thatβs purely arbitrary bs.

What is or isn't the same song in regards to the rules is arbitrary because art isn't arbitrary.
All Too Well from 2012 and All Too Well from 2021 might have similar instrumentation, lyrics, and even the same singer
Like why aren't covers combined for songs: they might be a different artist but it's still the same lyrics and sometimes it's the same instrumental would you say that's not that far off from some remixes? Why aren't mashups combined with the respective songs? It's all subjective and there's always gonna be disagreements about what is or isn't an extension of a song.
Jesus Christ, just chill for once. This year is almost over, go outside, touch grass and listen to all 10 minutes of All Too Well if you're stressed!

The recurrent rules are arbitrary and confusing. They allowed Christmas Tree Farm to chart in the bottom quadrant the past few weeks, despite being released in 2019. That's because it's a new version of the song. It's no different than the other "Taylor's Version" versions charting. I find the recurrent rules to be pretty clear on the whole. I thought that Billboard have said that 3 years is the cut off for this. So even the old version of Christmas Tree Farm would be allowed to chart in the bottom half of the Hot 100 if it had enough points because 2019 is less than 3 years ago. Unless they've changed it it should be only songs from before December 2018 which aren't allowed outside the top 50.
