I think the bottom 5 of this rankdown is agreed by a majority, like this Lillie Mae song. Tbh I don't really love the album, but I think some of her songs are interesting enough to put here. For this song, I think the chorus is unique with the fiddle almost giving Eastern music vibe. As far as I know she is a Third Man Records artist (same as Margo Price) and I noticed her from Rolling Stone year-end country albums list. Unfortunately Sambalada loses one of his top 3 (and someone will join him soon). Meanwhile whopping six last places from tim, 🌺CountryLineDancer, Trilogy, .indulgecountry, bboat11 and me are gone.

Jason Eady's war song focuses on possibilities just like the parent album (To The Passage of Time)'s theme. Since the bad ending is placed at the end, it's more likely that this song is anti-war. A bit sad that this song will mostly work for one time because of the simplistic instrumentation, but they help the listeners to focus on the story instead. The stark contrast of two possibilities is wonderfully presented. I definitely didn't expect this song to go very far, but I just want to include this song based on lyrics and the fact that it's SCM's Song of the Year. zack97 loses a top 3, while tim and bboat11 continue having perfect rankings. ccarter1023 loses his last place.

The lyrics here and the story here was nice, I just didn't care for the talking + singing combination in this song. (this is for "French Summer Sun")

Paul Cauthen is another find from Rolling Stone's year-end list. I would not hesitate to say that Room 41 is a weird album and definitely not for everyone, but if you like Johnny Cash-like vocals doing alt-country stuff, maybe it's for you. Also his new album is coming on April 1st. Anyway Cocaine Country Dancing is not a very meaningful song but it's infectious enough to work for me, and no I don't do cocaine. Sambalada loses yet another top 10. singingrulebritannia and I got a perfect ranking. zack97 loses his last place rank.

There are some objectively better songs (mostly Gray) from the new Jesse Daniel album, but I think this playlist has many sad songs already, and I'd like to feature music with more variety in this rankdown series. The translated lyrics may feel pale, but both men give great vocals and the accordion playing is fun. .indulgecountry loses another top 10, and zack97 got another perfect ranking.

I actually liked El Trabajador a good bit. I just put it my bottom five predictions because I figured most people wouldn't dig this as much as I did.

I think this is very unique. Well, that certainly is one way of describing it! But like fearlessarrow alluded to in his post, the vocals and production just made for a very odd and peculiar listen. While "French Summer Sun" is quite poignant from a lyrical standpoint, it just isn't something that I feel very compelled to revisit as I really have to be in a specific mood to want to listen to it as it is. Given that, I'm not too surprised that the majority agreed and in turn placed this in their bottom 5 as well. Speaking of unique, Paul Cauthen certainly is an artist that fits the bill and I wouldn't expect him to be everyones cup of tea. I first discovered Paul when I saw him open for Margo Price here in Austin a few years back and while I found myself rather intrigued, I still was left wondering if it was all just kind of a schtick as he can come across a bit gimmicky I think. Anyways, he's grown on me over time and I've since become a casual fan of his. One of my good friends even happened to get him to sign a copy of his vinyl record of Room 41 for me lol. I knew I'd be one of the highest ranking participants for "Cocaine Country Dancing", though, and therefore expected it to be out rather soon. I think I mentioned this from the outset of the rankdown, but "El Trabajador" was kind of an off-the-wall choice for Jesse Daniel lol. It's good to mix things up, so something like this certainly filled that void! Jesse certainly seems to be building himself up a following in the independent country music and rockabilly scene, so I'm excited to see what the future holds for him and hearing new music from him down the road. On that note, he was also the first artist I went to see in a live setting last year while we were in somewhat of a "post-pandemic" mode (which of course didn't last long thanks to the variants).

More brutal reveals today! Punch Brothers (or really Chris Thile) is famous in progressive bluegrass scene mainly for their blend with classical music and their collabs in various bluegrass projects (3 songs in Dierks Bentley's bluegrass album for example). Julep is picked beause it is their most popular song on Spotify (23 million streams), but also the album cover is intriguing (René Magritte painting "The Lovers"). Trilogy loses a top 5, while ccarter1023 loses a top 10. No last places were lost but 7 bottom 5 are gone.

I originally had another song in mind (Black as Crow) for the selection of the second collab album between Rhiannon Giddens and her partner Francesco Turrisi. However Avalon got a Grammy nomination in Best American Roots Song this year (results TBA), so I thought it would be more accessible than the other song. At least it was one of the least divisive songs and its overall rank basically stayed around 30 something.

Surprise! We still have some popular songs from Tyler Childers that are not from his studio albums and eligible to be in this rankdown. Nose on the Grindstone is a lament of an East Kentucky who cannot follow life advice of his coal miner father despite trying. Not an unfamiliar theme if you follow the scene, especially in recent years, but I think his ragged voice made the song. gonecountry loses a top 2 while fearlessarrow loses a top 10. This song almost made to top half at one point.

If I have to rank the songs with best intros and outros in 2021, Learnin' to Drown would be a serious contender. It feels very jazzy and expansive which complements the heart wrenching revelation of the “desperate but not hopeless” mentality. Some people might find it sedating though, which is disappointing but not surprising.
No top 10 loss helped it to be 5th least divisive song, but I ranked it highest among the participants.

The fact that this and Stand For Myself (which are at opposite end of the spectrum in every way) bookend the playlist is not entirely intentional, and given a comment above that proves speak-sing songs are poalrizing, I don't think this was too much of a surprise as the most divisive song of the rankdown. gonecountry becomes the first participant to lose his #1. ccarter1023 almost joined him by losing #2, while 🌺CountryLineDancer and tim both almost lose a top 5. On the contrary, a bottom 5 for 4 participants ran like a horse. Personally, it may be better to listen this song with the intended instrumental intro (El Comienzo del Viaje, The Beginning of the Journey), but I accept there are people that will never like Aaron Watson's singing voice, which sounds too much like talking at points.
